Defense lawyers say they expect to complete their bruising cross-examination of Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer and enforcer, on Monday morning. In dramatic testimony, Cohen last week directly implicated Trump in the alleged scheme, saying the former president directed him to hand over $130,000 to Daniels and promised him reimbursement. With the end of Cohen’s testimony looming, there is uncertainty over the extent of Trump’s defense case. Blanche referred to the possibility of Trump’s testimony on Thursday, the last day the court was in session. After the defense case wraps up, the prosecution has a chance to put on its own rebuttal.

In a new regulatory filing, the video game retailer said it will sell up to 45 million class A common shares in an at-the-market offering. The sale comes after GameStop shares surged earlier this week in a brief revival of the meme stock trade. Meanwhile, in a separate statement, GameStop said it now expects net first-quarter sales in the range of $872 million to $892 million, down from around $1.24 billion in the same quarter last year. GameStop's first-quarter net loss is expected to be between $27 million and $37 million, narrower than a net loss of $50.5 million in the year-earlier period.

CNN —A few weeks ago, I gave the keynote speech at an inaugural conference on Black literacy exploring what the organizers called an “alarming literacy gap” between Black students and their peers. The White students even had their prom at the local country club while the Black students’ prom was held in the school gym. And since schools with high numbers of poor Black and Brown students tend to be drastically underfunded the correlation between poverty and lower academic achievement is hardly surprising. More than two-thirds attend schools in which only a minority of students are eligible for FRPL, schools where better funding and opportunities mean better outcomes. Research shows that integration raises the attainment levels of all students — not just those who are Black, Brown and poor.

April's producer price index data beat estimates, gaining 0.5% for the month against 0.3% consensus estimates. The PPI data comes a day before Wednesday's consumer price index and will give investors a broader frame of reference. The shares of the movie theater chain AMC Entertainment were similarly buoyant, and obscure cryptocurrencies named after Roaring Kitty and GameStop posted huge gains. Retail traders have been spurred on by the return of Roaring Kitty to social media after a three-year hiatus. Aside from Roaring Kitty’s return to social media, the rally was not driven by any evident news about GameStop or AMC. “Given my past experience in analyzing the periodic bouts of meme stock activity, consider me suspicious,” Sosnick wrote in a research note.

Another meme stock, Trump Media and Technology Group, the Donald Trump-owned media company that controls Truth Social, brought back memories of the 2021 GameStop bonanza. With Trump Media, Trump supporters and other speculative traders pumped up the stock not for its (extraordinarily lousy) fundamentals, but more as a vote of support for the former president’s campaign and even a barometer of his winning chances. We’re not quite as exuberant today as we were then, but we’re still within spitting distance of all-time highs on major stock indices, Sosnick notes. In some ways, the arrival in the spring of Donald Trump’s media company reawakened the meme stock monster.
