OXFORD, England (AP) — Fans of Philip Pullman have been waiting almost five years for the final instalment in the author’s sextet of books about his intrepid heroine Lyra and her adventures in multiple worlds. “I haven’t got a title yet,” Pullman told The Associated Press in his home city of Oxford, where he was honored Thursday with the Bodley Medal. I haven’t found the right title yet — but I will.”The medal, awarded by Oxford University’s 400-year-old Bodleian Libraries, honors contributions to literature, media or science. Pullman says the next book will be his final foray into Lyra’s world -– though he also said that after the first trilogy, only to be tempted back. “There are other things I want to do,” including a book about words and images and how they work together on the imagination.

NEW YORK (AP) — Nobel laureate Kazuo Ishiguro's next book will be one for music lovers. Alfred A. Knopf announced Thursday that Ishiguro's “The Summer We Crossed Europe in the Rain,” coming out March 5, is a collection of lyrics written for the million-selling jazz singer Stacey Kent. The book combines older compositions dating back to 2007 and four “cinema” works for an upcoming project with Kent. “The Summer We Crossed Europe in the Rain” also includes an introduction by Ishiguro, illustrations by the Italian artist Bianca Bagnarelli and a QR code that links to an album of Kent performing songs by the author. What’s the last great book you read? What’s your favorite book no one else has heard of? My goodness, there is something about the way the Irish write that just gets me. What book should everybody read before the age of 21? “The Lord of the Rings.”What book should nobody read until the age of 40?

After filing last week’s newsletter comparing “Succession” to a work of “Game of Thrones”-style fantasy, I recorded a podcast episode with Razib Khan in which we talked about our shared affection for actual fantasy novels, our experience as early George R.R. It was a wide-ranging conversation, but one that stayed mostly with the big names of the genre — Martin, J.R.R. To be clear, this isn’t a list of my all-time favorites or even a list of “fantasy novels that should be adapted for TV instead of making more seasons of ‘The Rings of Power.’” It’s just me turning a glance at my bookshelf into a newsletter. You can think of this list of novels, maybe, as various inspirations for that imagined perfection. Hobb’s hero, Fitz, is one of the most successful examples of character-building and compelling interiority in recent fantasy.

Anyone who's ever curled up with a good book knows the health benefits of regular recreational reading. There's a single tweak you can make to your reading habits to become even more successful, says Northwestern management professor Brooke Vuckovic, who teaches a MBA class on extracting leadership lessons from literature. Her tip: After you've finished reading a new book, try describing it in one sentence. There's another benefit, too: When students in Vuckovic's MBA class write one-line book descriptions, they're often struck by how differently other people see the world, she says. One person might write a summary about Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" that focuses on the central love story.
