“I really want to be friends with a whale,” Mikey Day, the “Saturday Night Live” cast member, said this week as he stood inside the American Museum of Natural History and discussed his favorite displays. “They just look so magical.”“Sorry, it’s Thursday,” he continued. “I just came from work, and my brain is fried.”In keeping with a longstanding tradition, members of the cast of “Saturday Night Live,” deep in preparations for their upcoming show, put on tuxedos and feathery gowns to join benefactors of the American Museum of Natural History for the institution’s largest annual fund-raiser, held at the museum in Manhattan. “It’s always a nice cast bonding moment,” the “S.N.L.” cast member Bowen Yang said on a red carpet near the large dinosaur models in the Theodore Roosevelt Rotunda. “It’s like a perfect little reception for the new people.”The gala was chaired by Lorne Michaels, the creator and executive producer of “S.N.L.”; his wife, Alice Barry; the writer and actress, Tina Fey, who was once the show’s head writer; and her husband, the composer Jeff Richmond.

On Wednesday night, inside a cavernous event space on the Lower East Side, at the annual gala for the public art organization Creative Time, the actor Jeremy Strong said the news that striking actors and Hollywood studios had reached a tentative deal, “went around the room like wildfire.”“I just think it’s great news for the lights to be turned back on for everybody,” Mr. Strong said. “It means we can all get back to work,” said Julianne Moore, who added, “I miss my community. I miss getting up, and I’m just thinking about things, talking about things, working with other creative people.”“I miss, like, making something,” said Michelle Williams. Nearly 500 people attended the event. The crowd of actors, designers and art world fixtures, included the curator Antwaun Sargent, the designer and actor Waris Ahluwalia, the artist Taryn Simon, and Anne Pasternak, the director of the Brooklyn Museum, who was previously the president and artistic director of Creative Time.

“We’ll just have to commiserate about the Eagles’ chances this year,” Mr. Holt said. Guests were seated at long tables for dinner — burrata and branzino — topped with flowers and cans of La Croix, which was one of the event’s sponsors. The comedian and actor Mae Martin shared a table with Eriona Hysolli, a scientist who is overseeing efforts to reintroduce the extinct woolly mammoth in Siberia. “There is an inherent ranking that comes with a list, which I feel, like, is always difficult to wrap your mind around when you’re talking about art,” he said. Mr. Torres said he turned preparation for the evening “into a project” by making an outfit, which included a pointy gold hat with a matching gold jacket and a blue tie around his waist.

On Monday night in Midtown Manhattan, Neil Patrick Harris, Nicky Hilton Rothschild and Michael Kors danced in their seats, as J. A crowd frequently spotted on yachts filled the Pool restaurant in Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday night for the second annual Caring for Women Dinner hosted by the Kering Foundation. “I said yes because Salma asked,” Oprah Winfrey, a co-chair for the dinner, said as she addressed the room, referring to Salma Hayek Pinault, who is also a co-chair and board member of the Kering Foundation. The space was filled to the brim with tropical plants and marquee names. “I don’t get out much,” Ms. Winfrey said, adding, “I only come out with the intention of using my voice in a way that can be meaningful and helpful.”Inside the dining room, where guests were served a dinner of scallop aguachile and lamb belly, Leonardo DiCaprio sat with Olivia Wilde, Prabal Gurung and Malala Yousafzai, and across from Zoë Kravitz and her partner, Channing Tatum.

Just beyond the room, about 200 celebrities, fashion designers and media figures were packed tightly into a light-blue ballroom in the mansion. The night before, Mr. Adams hosted a different event on the other side of Central Park. “The crisis, not the people, the crisis is undermining the economic strength of our city,” he said. “The people want to come here to work, and their inability to do so, they can’t contribute to the city. It’s going to impact our police, it is going to impact our streets, it is going to impact everything in our city.”“And it is just wrong for New York City residents, taxpayers,” he continued.

“I’m back trying red,” Huma Abedin shared, talking about her look and lipstick, which has been the subject of many takes. “I went through this detox period where I started wearing nudes,” she said. “And it is really funny, people recognize me less when I don’t have lipstick on, and it is nice to be incognito, but I’m like, ‘Let me try it again,’” she said, adding, “It feels great.”Ms. Abedin, who is also a contributor to MSNBC, was more reserved about the indictments against former President Donald J. “Everybody back up!” someone called to a crowd of people surrounding the model and actress Christie Brinkley, who was standing near a neatly trimmed lawn on a sunny and hot Saturday afternoon. Ms. Brinkley had just arrived at Polo Hamptons, an annual cocktail party and polo match held over two weekends in July on the sprawling, private Fishel estate in Bridgehampton, N.Y.“I’ve always gone to polo throughout my time out here because it is so East Coast,” said Ms. Brinkley, 69, as she sipped from a small bottle of rosé from Bellissima, her wine label, which people were also drinking nearby. “And there are usually some cute polo players.”The event on Saturday, which drew more than 900 people, was organized by Social Life magazine, a lifestyle publication based in the Hamptons that was celebrating its 20th anniversary. The afternoon attracted a crowd that included Jean Shafiroff, the philanthropist, Lizzie Asher, the president of Macchu Pisco, a spirits company, and Maria and Kenneth Fishel, who own the estate.

Garcia, seeded five, has a game suited to grass and used her speed and agility at the net as well as powerful returns to grind down her 21-year-old opponent. Garcia, 29, who has twice reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, suffered a brief wobble at the start of the second set, spraying unforced errors around the court and Volynets took advantage, breaking serve twice for a 3-0 lead. The Californian, whose only previous Wimbledon main draw appearance in 2021 ended in first-round defeat, could not cope when Garcia put her game back together. "I had to have a reaction and I was able to come back quickly," Garcia said in an on-court interview. When play resumed Garcia did not hang about, winning the fifth game in a row when Volynets served a double fault then serving for the match.

The Met Gala, which will be held next week, serves as the unofficial birthday party for Vogue magazine. The outfits at Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World gala, held last night at Jazz at Lincoln Center, generally don’t involve as much forethought, but it is nevertheless an opulent affair. Tiffany Haddish wore a red and black sequined gown and Natasha Lyonne was in a black Area dress with a bedazzled oyster bodice. The storied masquerade party and annual gala dinner raises money to preserve the artworks of the flood-threatened Italian city. The event raised $1.2 million and transformed the Plaza into an arms-in-the-air dance party with the D.J.

MELBOURNE, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Chinese number one Zhang Shuai hopes the WTA tour can return to her country this season as it opens up after abandoning the "zero-COVID" policy but said the Peng Shuai issue was out of her control. Former WTA player Peng accused a senior Chinese government official of sexual assault in 2021 in a post on social media that was soon removed from the country's internet. The WTA has said a return to China would require a resolution to the Peng situation and its 2023 tour calendar lists events only up to the U.S. Open, with no clarity on tournaments to be held in China. read moreAsked whether Peng should meet with the WTA as a step to resolving the impasse, Zhang declined to offer a view.
