CNN spoke with a doctor, gender rights activists and parents of trans children about what to say when a child comes out as transgender, how to address certain challenges and what receiving gender-affirming care is like. Some parents want to support their child but worry if their gender identity is the result of a phase, or if they’ll change their mind later. It would be their decision resulting from the exploration of their gender identity, rather than someone trying to control it for them. Rhyland’s son later realized he is trans masculine nonbinary and uses he/him pronouns, and he’s OK with Rhyland calling him her son. (Trans masculine nonbinary means someone’s gender identity is nonbinary, yet they present in a typically masculine fashion with their name, style and more.)

Typical spiders — and most creatures — tend to find the noise and wind disturbance from nearby busy roads to be too stressful, but the Jorō spider doesn’t seem to mind much, according to a new study published in Arthropoda on February 13. University of Georgia ecology students and study coauthors Kade Stewart, Caitlin Phelan and Alexa Schultz handle a Jorō spider. What to do when you come across a Jorō spiderAs the nonnative Jorō spider continues to spread in the region, the spiders pose a threat to native species that are beneficial to the environment. While conducting the study, the researchers found evidence of the Jorō spiders coexisting with native spiders, Davis said. And the Jorō spiders eat species that are good and bad for the environment, including the infamous lantern fly, he added.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem signed a bill that bans gender-affirming health care for trans youth. To get gender-affirming care for her son, she now has to drive more than 230 miles out of state. Online life insurance agencies saw surges of new term life insurance policy applications in early March 2020, and applications don't show signs of slowing down. Similarly, fellow online life insurance agency Fabric Life Insurance has reported 50% more applications than usual since February. Term life insurance, or insurance that covers a person for a predetermined period of time which can range from two to 30 years, is the most common and affordable. Term life policies can cost as little as $20 a month — much more affordable than the alternative whole life policies, which last a lifetime and are usually only recommended in specific cases. After that, your life insurance won't change, no matter where you work, what happens in your life, or what happens in the world.
