CNN —A university janitor who turned off a freezer after hearing multiple “annoying alarms,” ruined more than 20 years of research, according to a lawsuit filed against his employer by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in upstate New York. The school is seeking more than $1 million in damages and legal fees from Daigle Cleaning Systems as a result of the incident. The college does not believe the janitor is at fault but instead blames Daigle Cleaning Systems for failing to properly train and supervise him, according to the suit. CNN reached out to attorneys for Daigle Cleaning Systems and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for comment. A warning was posted on the freezer, according to the court filing.

A janitor destroyed $1 million in scientific research after turning off a super cold freezer in a lab. He had heard "annoying alarms" coming from the freezer where over 20 years of research were stored. Lakshmi conducted high-level research inside the lab that "had the potential to be groundbreaking" and funded by the university, the lawsuit said. It's believed that Harrington destroyed $1 million worth of scientific research and RPI will be seeking as yet unspecified damages. Daigle Cleaning Systems and Lawyers for RPI did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment about the lawsuit.

The authorities believe the plan will help in faster recognition of dubious transactions involving shell companies and money laundering. The plan is to implement recent recommendations of the FATF which require lawyers, notaries, other independent legal professionals and accountants to report suspicious transactions, and maintain a record of transactions undertaken for clients, said the first source. "If lawyers are brought under the money laundering law, it will breach the trust between client and attorney and impact privilege communications," said senior lawyer Hiten Venegaonkar. Other countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia have anti-money laundering requirements for law firms and lawyers, said K.V. India is currently compliant with FATF regulations but even within the compliant category, FATF assigns scores to various countries based on strength of regulations and implementation of these.

April 18 (Reuters) - Beleaguered bitcoin miners are finally feeling the spring sunshine after a cold, hard crypto winter. At the current bitcoin price, these companies' cash flows have substantially improved and most of them should have no problem paying their obligations," said Jaran Mellerud, analyst at bitcoin mining services company Luxor. Bitcoin mining is the process by which a network of computers validates a block of transactions on the blockchain. "The bitcoin price increase has bought these companies time, but it would be detrimental for these companies if it were to fall back down to $20,000," he said. A rapid rise in power prices or a fast fall in bitcoin could usher in a new cold spell.
The Supreme Court of India also ordered the formation of an investor-protection panel amid sharp falls in the Adani group's shares. The Supreme Court asked SEBI to check "whether there has been a failure to disclose transactions with related parties" and "whether there was any manipulation of stock prices in contravention of existing laws". Seven listed companies of the Adani group have lost about $135 billion in value since the report was published. In its rebuttal, Adani said "all related party transactions are at arm's length, properly disclosed and reviewed/audited by statutory independent auditors". The court also formed a panel to be headed by a retired Supreme Court judge to examine how investor protection mechanisms can be strengthened.

Boss Mukesh Ambani might do precisely that to fund a push by his $220 billion Reliance Industries (RELI.NS) conglomerate into consumer lending. The company is spinning off and listing its little-noticed non-bank financial company. More than rivals, Ambani is sitting on a treasure trove of data to assess the credit worthiness of borrowers. As a home-grown tycoon, Ambani has a better chance of success than other late entrants to financial services. On Oct. 21, Reliance revealed plans to spin off Reliance Strategic and rename it Jio Financial Services.
