And so it is with Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway slashing its holdings in Apple and Bank of America in recent months. Buffett himself has indicated in recent years that he doesn't see an abundance of compelling value on offer in the public markets. But this in itself isn't much of a clue about future market prospects or the macroeconomic moment. Borgato says he believes "Buffett wants to leave a Berkshire behind that requires [fewer] future cash allocation decisions, not more." I'm not a buyer of the "cash on the sidelines" case for expecting money market assets to drain into stocks.

A federal jury found that costumed players, dressed as Sesame characters near Philadelphia, did not discriminate against young Black patrons in widely shared video two years ago, court records showed on Thursday. The Philadelphia panel sided with SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment, voting unanimously that the defense's Sesame Place Philadelphia, a children’s theme park in Burks County, did not discriminate against girls shown in videos that went viral in July 2022. The verdict was reached on Wednesday and entered into court records on Thursday. “We are pleased with the jury’s verdict and thank them for their service and attention," SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment said in statement to NBC News on Friday. “We want every guest at our park to feel welcomed and safe when they visit us and to be able to see and feel aspects of themselves in the experiences we create,” SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment said.

Stocks had a rough week, topped off with a pummeling Friday after the July jobs data came in weaker than expected. Until then, bad economic news was good news for the stock market, because it meant the Federal Reserve would start cutting interest rates sooner. On Thursday, a drop in U.S. manufacturing activity for July and a jump in initial jobless claims dragged down the market. Next week is light on economic data, so expect earnings reports and CEO commentaries to drive the market action. The ceremony was on the grounds of the exclusive Bangalore Club, an oasis in one of India’s largest cities. A freight train collided with a passenger train in eastern India on Monday, killing at least eight people and injuring 50 others, officials said. Four coaches of the popular and often-crowded passenger train derailed when it was rammed from behind by the commercial train. Images from the accident site showed one of the passenger coaches lifted off the railway track and balancing on a coach of the freight train. The driver and the assistant driver of the freight train and a guard on the passenger train were among those killed. Jaya Varma Sinha, the chairperson of India’s railway board, said rescue operations were completed.

After his first two national election victories, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India easily set his own terms, with his Bharatiya Janata Party winning clear majorities. It was still a victory, but one that left him dependent on a host of coalition partners — particularly on politicians from two regional parties who could make or break Mr. Modi’s ability to form a government. Of the more than a dozen parties that make up the B.J.P.’s coalition, known as the National Democratic Alliance, most won just one or two seats, leaving the party in a difficult predicament. said it had reached an agreement to form a coalition government that includes those two regional parties — the Telugu Desam Party and Janata Dal-United. They will be the biggest junior partners, but they are also avowedly secular and removed from Mr. Modi’s Hindu-nationalist ideology.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi entered India’s general election projecting supreme confidence. “Ab ki baar, 400 paar” went his party’s slogan, meaning this time his side aimed to surpass 400 seats in the lower house of Parliament, a staggering majority. But as the seven-week voting period enters its final stretch, with results expected on June 4, India is witnessing something unusual from its powerful leader. As Mr. Modi crisscrosses the country for rallies in 100-degree heat, he has often appeared on the defensive, and sometimes rattled. He has resorted to stoking anti-Muslim sentiments to fend off attempts to split his Hindu support base, only to deny his own words later.

Van der Steene says the Maersk team has seen less than 200 containers taken off the Dali over the last nine days. But based on North American freight orders from Asia, Van der Steene described 2024 as a "year of reinvigoration." Peak shipping season, which starts in June and continues through the summer for the back to school shopping and then the holidays, is expected to be normal in volume, Van der Steene said. "There's nothing that indicates that it would be a slower peak season or a bigger peak season," said Van der Steene.

Just last week the S&P 500 hit a new all-time high and notched its best showing in a year. But this nearly unprecedented surge in the markets is sparking some concern over what’s driving the rally and whether it can continue. The S&P 500 and Dow last week each reached record levels after blockbuster earnings from the chipmaker set off a broad market rally. The S&P 500 is up more than 6% for the year, but when you equally weigh all of the stocks in the index, it’s up just 2.5%. Last year, the S&P 500 rose by 24.2%, but the equally-weighted index was up by just 11.6%.

Moller-Maersk, the second-largest global ocean carrier, is advising customers to prepare for a Red Sea crisis that could stretch well into the second half of this year. "Unfortunately, we don't see any change in the Red Sea happening anytime soon," Charles van der Steene, regional president for Maersk North America, tells CNBC. After attacks on two U.S.-flagged Maersk vessels on January 24, the Maersk Detroit and Maersk Chesapeake, Maersk Line, Limited — a U.S. subsidiary of Maersk, which operates U.S.-flagged vessels independently — announced it would no longer traverse the Red Sea. The global shipping and logistics company's cautious view of the Red Sea safety conditions comes despite a U.S.-led multinational military operation in the region, Operation Prosperity Guardian. "Our advice to our customers is specifically about building upon the uncertainty by being agile," said van der Steene.

Have a concentrated portfolioHaving a concentrated portfolio means investing in a relatively small number of stocks as opposed to a larger number for the sake of diversity. Buy quality stocksSucceeding with a concentrated portfolio relies on one thing: buying quality stocks. A quality stock is a company that's able to consistently post profits and returns on capital. Apple and Alphabet would be considered consensus quality stocks, and Munger is well known for his fondness of shares of Coca-Cola, another stock traditionally classified as quality. Buy stocks with good management teamsOne element of a company that makes it "quality" is its management team.
