CNN —Two men were charged with murder and other felony charges for their roles in the mass shooting after a Kansas City Chiefs championship rally last week, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said Tuesday. Lyndell Mays, of Raytown, and Dominic M. Miller, of Kansas City, were both charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action, the prosecutor’s office said. Though they were both charged with murder, Miller’s firearm was the one that fatally wounded Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a mother of two and local DJ and radio host. The incident was at least the 48th mass shooting in the United States in 2024, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which like CNN counts those in which four or more are shot, not including a perpetrator. Police initially said Wednesday they detained three people after the shooting, but one was later “determined to not be involved.”

Time and again, I was struck by a public attitude toward children I seldom encountered in America: unequivocal support. In America, we socialize our children to see strangers not as helpers but as threats. Virtually every other industrialized nation provides more government aid for their children than America does. Children who are neglected — a loose term inextricably tied to poverty — are thrown into a foster-care system known for its propensity to harm children. It’s hot in there and we’re not just talking about the steam in the showers, though there’s a lot of that, too. A naval base in real life, it has a picturesque location on a pier; the show’s Italian title, “Mare Fuori,” translates more literally to “The Sea Outside,” as in the sea outside the prison windows. Italian viewers are getting ready for Season 4, whose filming was occasionally interrupted by the screams of fans clustered outside the prison gates. Based on the first season, it is easy enough to understand the impact of “The Sea Beyond” on T-shirt sales and young heart rates. Its heart is pure soap opera, and the writing and direction do not aspire to more.
