Anthime Joseph Gionet, a far-right media personality nicknamed “Baked Alaska” who is known for livestreaming himself participating in illegal activity, was arrested by the F.B.I. on Friday and accused of illegally storming the Capitol during the attack on the building by President Trump’s supporters last week. Mr. Gionet, who has been banned from Twitter and YouTube for his content, livestreamed himself in the mob on DLive, a streaming service becoming more popular after a mass exodus of right-wing figures from more mainstream platforms. He posted a video that showed supporters of Mr. Trump taking selfies with officers in the Capitol who calmly asked them to leave the premises. Many of the mob participants have been easily identified through their social media posts.

REUTERS/Sergio Flores/File PhotoWASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Department of Justice said on Wednesday its email systems were accessed by the hackers who broke into software company SolarWinds, another indication of the gravity of the breach that has shaken Washington. The scale of the hack at the Department of Justice was not immediately clear but it could be significant. The statement went on to say that the Justice Department had no indication any classified systems were impacted. But winning access to as many as thousands of email inboxes from the nation’s premier law enforcement organization could still provide an intelligence bonanza for foreign hackers. The department plays a key role in rooting out foreign spies, enforcing sanctions and fighting corruption.

WASHINGTON—Government antitrust cases challenging Google’s business practices are going to be a long road in court. U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta in Washington said Friday it will be almost three years before a trial begins in the Justice Department’s antitrust lawsuit alleging Google uses a web of exclusionary agreements and other tactics to preserve a monopoly for its flagship search engine and related advertising business. Judge Mehta set a tentative trial date of Sept. 12, 2023, based on a lengthy proposed schedule laid out by the parties. “If anybody thought we would be getting to trial quickly, this certainly will dispel that notion,” the judge said during a telephonic hearing. A group of 11 state attorneys general joined with the Justice Department in filing the lawsuit in October.

Texas, backed by nine other states, filed a lawsuit against Alphabet-owned Google on Wednesday, accusing it of breaking antitrust law in how it runs its online advertising business. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton had joined the U.S. Justice Department’s lawsuit against the company in October. “Google repeatedly used its monopolistic power to control pricing (and) engage in market collusions to rig auctions in a tremendous violation of justice,” Paxton said in a Facebook video. Google “eliminated its competition and crowned itself the king of online advertising,” he added. The nine states that joined Texas are Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, South Dakota, North Dakota, Utah and Idaho.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Texas and nine other states sued Google on Wednesday, accusing it of working with Facebook Inc in violation of antitrust law to boost its already-dominant online advertising business. Google called the Texas lawsuit “meritless.” Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In its lawsuit, Texas asks a judge to find Google guilty of breaking antitrust law and to order the violations to stop. Google ad sales account for over 80% of Alphabet’s revenue. Mr. Barr brought the Justice Department closer to the White House than any attorney general in a half-century. Defying the distance that federal law enforcement officials have typically maintained from campaign politics, Mr. Barr spent the months leading up to the election echoing Mr. Trump’s unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud. “To date, we have not seen fraud on a scale that could have effected a different outcome in the election,” Mr. Barr told The Associated Press. It was not clear whether Mr. Barr was willing to do so, and a Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment. The recent string of departures from the president’s views were rare for Mr. Barr, who had worked from the start to advance Mr. Trump’s political agenda by undermining the most significant conclusions of the Russia investigation.

Such an outcome would be disastrous not only for victims, who demand transparency and accountability, but also for the bankruptcy system itself. It would also set a dangerous precedent in bankruptcy: Purdue’s may be the only major bankruptcy involving allegations of serious criminal misconduct in which the principals were not charged. Moreover, with the support of the Justice Department, that investigation is proceeding in complete secrecy. Because an examiner is not a creditor, however, he or she would not be intimidated by the poison pill. Once Purdue Pharma proposes a reorganization plan that implements the Sacklers’ offer — which seems imminent — the pressure for creditors to approve it will be strong, spurred by the poison pill.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More than 1,000 Chinese researchers have left the United States amid a U.S. crackdown on alleged technology theft, top U.S. security officials said on Wednesday, adding that Chinese agents had already been targeting the incoming Biden administration. Evanina said Chinese researchers in the United States who were under scrutiny of U.S. agencies were “all coming here at the behest of the Chinese government.”China described the visa crackdown earlier this year as “naked” political persecution and racial discrimination that seriously violated human rights. Sino-U.S. relations have deteriorated to their worst in decades during outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump’s tenure with disputes simmering over issues from trade and technology to Hong Kong and the coronavirus.

Breakingviews - UK mimics Big Tech in quest to reduce its clout

LONDON (Reuters Breakingviews) - Britain’s new Digital Markets Unit has a distinctively Silicon Valley vibe. The DMU, unveiled on Friday and due to begin work in April 2021, will police dominant technology groups like Facebook and Google’s parent, Alphabet. The government wants the DMU to ensure consumers and small businesses “aren’t disadvantaged” by the business practices of the duo, which together sucked up 80% of UK digital advertising in 2019. A 40%-50% return on capital employed, way above their probable single-digit cost of capital, may indeed stem from monopolistic pricing of advertising services, necessitating regulatory action. Britain’s decision to mimic Big Tech’s agility offers the best hope of reducing its clout.
