Olivia Colman opened up about the gender pay gap in the film and television industry. She told CNN's Christiane Amanpour that execs make excuses not to pay women as much as men. She noted one example where a male actor was paid 12,000% more than his female counterpart. Christiane Amanpour then asked the "Crown" star if she'd experienced pay disparity herself. "I know of one pay disparity, which is a 12,000% difference," she added.

They went extinct at the same time as the dinosaurs. “Do I necessarily agree that it’s a new genus and species?” Dr. Caldwell said. But those are sort of the scientific quibbles, right?”It’s more likely, Dr. Caldwell said, that the fossil described in the study is simply a new species of the clidastes genus. Under this view, it would take the name Clidastes walhallaensis. Still, the paper adds “extremely valuable” data for future research to consider as the field develops what is still a fledgling understanding of the evolution of mosasaurs, Dr. Caldwell said.

Small toy figures with laptops and smartphones are seen in front of displayed Comcast logo, in this illustration taken December 5, 2021. Revenue for the media giant’s third quarter rose 0.9% to $30.12 billion, beating analysts’ estimates of $29.68 billion, according to LSEG data. Comcast lost 18,000 broadband customers in the quarter, as it faces more competition from wireless carriers such as Verizon (VZ.N) and T-Mobile (TMUS.O), which offer broadband. Paid subscribers increased by 4 million in the third quarter, to 28 million, from the 24 million reported in the previous quarter. That growth was driven partly by the addition of Comcast subscribers who had been getting Peacock for free, and converted to paid subscribers.

Hit and missOf course, quality is a big factor in a film's box office success, too. That pullback has already begun with the 2023 summer movie season. Starting the first Friday in May and running until Labor Day weekend, the summer movie season typically represents 40% of all movie ticket sales for the year. So far through July 2, the summer box office has tallied $1.88 billion. In summer 2022, the box office got a boost from Tom Cruise's "Top Gun: Maverick," a Paramount and Skydance feature.

Tom Cruise looks like he's headed for another summer on top at the box office. A China opening could add millions of dollars to the film's gross — and to Cruise's pockets. Tom Cruise had a pretty great 2022, with a top-grossing film, a best picture nomination at the Oscars, and a slew of good press. But this isn't just good for "Mission Impossible" — it will also boost Cruise's payday, which is likely linked to the film's performance. But for Cruise, every dollar — or Yuan — that the films brings in means more money to his pocket.

'Jurassic Park' still has bite at 30, and here's why

CNN —It’s been 30 years since Steven Spielberg’s dinosaurs stampeded across the screen in the first “Jurassic Park,” but it feels more recent. Admittedly, I was the exact target audience for this creature feature, and even though I was already somewhat of a self-taught critic (note the aforementioned mouthiness), I was awed by what I saw that summer three decades ago, and my impressions of “Jurassic Park” remain to this day. But the willingness by Universal to experiment — to challenge the “this is how we’ve always done it” thinking — seems to have paid off. Universal has generated more than $1 billion in premium V.O.D. revenue in less than three years, while showing little-to-no decrease in ticket sales. In some cases, box-office sales even increased when films became available in homes, which Universal has decided is a side effect of premium V.O.D. Universal, for instance, made “Minions: The Rise of Gru” available for premium V.O.D.

How Did Birds First Take Off?

In 1993, “Jurassic Park” helped inspire 9-year-old Stephen Brusatte to become a paleontologist. So Dr. Brusatte was thrilled to advise the producers of last year’s “Jurassic World: Dominion” on what scientists had learned about dinosaurs since he was a child. He was especially happy to see one of the most important discoveries make it to the screen: dinosaurs that sported feathers. “A lot of people thought it was made up,” said Dr. Brusatte, a professor at the University of Edinburgh. Now Dr. Brusatte and other paleontologists are trying to determine exactly how feathered dinosaurs achieved powered flight and became the birds that fly overhead today — an evolutionary mystery that stretches more than 150 million years.

A world in three islands on the Mediterranean

CNN —In the middle of the Mediterranean Sea lies a small country made up of three inhabited islands and irresistible allure. Across its three inhabited islands – Malta, Gozo and Comino – you’ll find every sun-soaked aspect of the perfect vacation. The solution: Marsaskala, towards the southeastern tip of Malta island. Mellieħa Bay and St. Paul’s BayBugibba is a classic seaside resort town in St. Paul's Bay. The population is a modest two people, there are no cars, and no signs of globalization – just the untouched Mediterranean.
This is the same Nina Gold who’s made a successful career casting some of the defining films and TV shows of this century. “I still don’t really understand what it is that makes acting good,” she says. For “Bad Sisters’” smarmy, abusive antagonist John Paul, Gold cast Claes Bang. For Gold and her team – rising to six people, depending on projects – it’s a lot of logistics and audition tapes. Gold cast Taylor-Johnson in his breakout role as John Lennon in “Nowhere Boy” (2009) at age 18-20, she guesses, but had been auditioning him since about the age of nine.
‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ had the biggest-ever global opening weekend for an animated title. Photo: Nintendo and Universal Studios/Associated Press“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” surpassed $1 billion in estimated global box office receipts on Sunday, the first movie to do so in 2023, according to research firm Comscore . Through Sunday the film has grossed $490 million domestically and $532 million internationally. Only five films have crossed the billion-dollar mark since the onset of the pandemic, according to Box Office Mojo: “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Jurassic World: Dominion.”
The animated film “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” crossed the $1 billion box-office threshold on Sunday, making it the fifth movie to do so since the start of the pandemic and the surest sign yet that the theatrical movie business is on the rebound after a prolonged downturn. Of the five films to cross the $1 billion mark since the pandemic began, “Super Mario” is the first animated one. In fact, “Super Mario” helped push the April domestic box office up 11.5 percent compared with prepandemic levels, according to the box office analyst David A. Gross called the stat “a breakthrough” since it marks the first month that has surpassed its prepandemic average. The 2023 year-to-date box office deficit is now down 21.8 percent compared with that average.

Rolex has quietly discontinued one of its professional watches, the magnetic field-resistant Milgauss. Bob's Watches CEO Paul Altieri told Insider he's holding off selling until prices find a new steady state. The original version was worn by the scientists at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, in Geneva, Rolex says. It even ranks near last place among the 16 Rolex models tracked on the site. Of course, Rolex could resurrect the Milgauss in a few years, but until it does, mad scientists will have to content themselves with a pre-owned model.

James Cameron is king of the world — again

7 highest-grossing movie ever with $1.7 billion globally. Director James Cameron has made three of the top 10 biggest movies of all time. 7 highest-grossing movie of all time over the weekend with $1.7 billion worldwide, passing "Jurassic World" and the 2019 "Lion King" remake. Next up is the sixth biggest movie ever, "Spider-Man: No Way Home," which grossed $1.9 billion. It's the highest-grossing movie of 2022 at the global box office, dethroning "Top Gun: Maverick."
"Avatar: The Way of Water" has surpassed "Maverick's" box office haul in just its first three weeks in theaters, raking in an astonishing $1.51 billion worldwide since Dec. 16 according to Box Office Mojo data. Box office watchers don't expect "Avatar 2" to slow down any time soon. Along with the original "Avatar" ($2.92 billion) and "Titanic" ($2.2 billion), Cameron has now directed three of the 10 biggest blockbusters ever. "The first movie famously just kept going and going and going." "Avatar's" box office dominance wasn't a given from the outset.
"Avatar: The Way of Water" has made over $1 billion in ticket sales in just two weeks. James Cameron's blockbuster, the sequel to the highest-grossing movie of all time, joins "Jurassic World: Dominion" as a 10-figure earner this year and may depose Tom Cruise's "Top Gun: Maverick" as the highest-grossing 2022 release by the end of its time in theaters. "Avatar's" performance means that 2022 will end with three films passing the billion-dollar threshold at the box office. While that's a far cry from the nine billion-dollar grossers that 2019 — the final full box office year before the pandemic — had, it's still an increase from 2020 and 2021 which had zero and one movies earn over $1 billion, respectively. Though some industry watchers had predicted that the domestic box office would cross $8 or $9 billion, those hopes were dashed in part because some big-budget films have been delayed, including another Tom Cruise title, the hotly-anticipated "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning".
It’s not that theatrical film exhibition was in a particularly good place before the pandemic. Yet the astounding box-office figures of 2022 tell a different story: Movie theaters didn’t become obsolete. It offered up the best of the moviegoing experience: spectacle, plus quality, plus rewatchability. But best of all, the hunger for the overly familiar was not the only story to be told this year. But if the pandemic-era absence of theatrical releases proved one thing, it’s that people love going to the movies, really love it, and not just to see Marvel movies.
Avatar: The Way of Water took more at the box office in its first 10 days than the original film. On its opening weekend, the sequel failed to live up to studio expectations for ticket sales. The $253 million box office take suggests the film will maintain momentum into the new year. "Avatar" made $212.7 million in its first 10 days in 2009 and went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time, taking more than $2.9 billion. The sequel is estimated to have made $56 million in North America over the weekend, compared with $134 million on the opening weekend – lower than the $150 million to $175 million projections.
