For These Nearly Extinct Crocodiles, Life Found a Way

Eggs the size of oranges cracking alongside hatchlings mewling and chirping like a choir of baby birds. The birth of 60 Siamese crocodiles in the wild last month was all very Jurassic Park. The hatchlings were the largest population born this century, representing two decades of conservation efforts. While the babies slipped and waddled through their trio of nests, their marble-like eyes blinked upon a bright new world for a species once nearly as extinct as the dinosaurs. “The fact that we’ve been able to help these crocodiles recover and see this landmark breeding event, it’s very significant.”

AI skeptics — who are legion, and not necessarily part of the fringe tin foil hat crowd — are begging Silicon Valley to take a beat before unleashing AI to the world. Then, the big reveal: It’s all contained in Apple’s new iPad, its thinnest and most powerful ever, thanks to its brand new AI chip. Meanwhile, is anyone else getting inundated with Google’s Pixel ads, which show people giddily using the smartphone’s AI photo-editing software to deceive their online followers? Apple is expected to announce its own ChatGPT-like tools that could be a game changer for your internet searches. But it’s 29 years old, written when the true internet era was still just a gleam in Al Gore’s eye. You could further argue that the passage predicted the Great Stagnation that Tyler Cowen identified in 2011, the productivity slowdown and disappointing economic growth that followed the initial 1990s-era internet boom. Writing for Quillette, he argues that globalization and homogenization have reduced cultural competition in roughly the way that the “Lost World” passage describes. It’s not just that we’re forgoing opportunities to improve our macro cultures. Shouldn’t we expect that macro cultures, when selection is weak, will drift into dysfunction just as firm cultures do?

CNN —You’re having fun playing golf and then a mob of kangaroos suddenly interrupts your round. Roche explained in his post that the kangaroos were traversing the fourth hole on the St John’s course at the Heritage Golf and Country Club in Victoria, Australia. Stephen Roche/XWhile the kangaroos’ appearance left some jumping for joy, others jokingly attributed some well-worn golfing habits onto the marsupials. At Anglesea Golf Club, also in Victoria, players share the fairways with over 300 Eastern Grey kangaroos, with a popular bus tour run to educate visitors on its resident ‘roo population.

CNN —The nominations for the 96th Academy Awards were revealed last week and – as they so often do – caused quite a stir. Co-written and directed by Triet, “Anatomy of a Fall” is nominated for five Oscars this year in total, including for best original screenplay and best picture. That gives Williams more Academy Award nominations than any other living person. According to the Academy, the late Walt Disney holds the overall record of career nominations, with a grand total of 59. The bone is the first example of a larynx in reptilian dinosaurs that paleontologists have ever found. Based on a fossil from a Pinacosaurus grangeri, paleontologists think that some large dinosaurs might have chirped like birds, not roared like lions. The fossil is the first intact larynx bone from a dinosaur ever found, the scientists said in their study which was published in the journal Nature earlier this year. How they found the bone and discovered its purposeA scan of the fossilized larynx of the Ankylosaurus dinosaur Pinacosaurus grangeri.
