☆ Boeing hands over first 787 Dreamliner to China since 2019

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner sits on the tarmac at Boeing Field in Seattle, Washington. Boeing on Thursday handed over a 787 Dreamliner directly to a Chinese airline for the first time since November 2019, a milestone that could open up the possibility of deliveries of the manufacturer's cash cow, the 737 Max. The Boeing 787-9 for privately owned Juneyao Airlines departed from outside of Boeing's Everett, Washington, factory for Shanghai, Boeing said Thursday. The last new delivery of a new Boeing 787 to a Chinese airline was in 2021 through a leasing company. Boeing sent the aircraft as China's pause on scores of pending deliveries of the Boeing 737 Max, the company's bestselling jet, nears its fifth year.

Russia's airspace is closed to many global airlines, forcing carriers to detour around the nation. Routes to and from Asia are up to four hours longer. Finnair's flight to Japan is four hours longer, while United treks an extra two hours to India. Carriers like British Airways, Finnair, Dutch carrier KLM, and Lufthansa, are flying about one to three hours longer than normal to avoid Russia. "Instead of a three-man crew, the extra hours can tip an airline into a heavy crew of four — and when there is a global pilot shortage, that can be really inconvenient."

SYDNEY/BEIJING, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Airlines have boosted January international seat capacity to and from China by 9.5% over the last week as they ramp up flights after its border opening, according to aviation data provider Cirium, though flights remain at a fraction of pre-pandemic levels. International capacity to and from China scheduled for the month of February has risen by 23% over the last week and for March by 13% over the same period, Cirium data showed. A major jump in capacity is expected in April, after the start of the summer airline schedule season that begins on March 26. Seats to and from China will rise to 4.3 million a month in April, up from about 1.85 million in January, 2 million in February and 2.7 million in March, according to Cirium data.
