After a judge rejected his Second Amendment challenge to the law, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to more than six years in prison. The Fifth Circuit initially affirmed his conviction in a short decision, rebuffing the argument that the law violated the Second Amendment in a footnote. But the appeals court reversed course after the Bruen decision last June. The Fifth Circuit rejected a variety of old laws identified by the government as possible historical analogues, saying they did not sufficiently resemble the one concerning domestic-violence orders. What was significant, he wrote, quoting that decision, was that “our ancestors would never have accepted” the law on domestic-violence orders.

The government filed a court petition last week arguing that “Glory to Hong Kong” was used to “insult” China’s national anthem. While not naming any defendants, the filing included 32 links to the song on YouTube. And in December, the Hong Kong authorities criticized Google for displaying the protest song under search results for Hong Kong’s national anthem. The impact of the case on how the tech companies operate in Hong Kong remains to be seen. Google and Meta established offices in Hong Kong over a decade ago, and today each has up to several hundred employees there.

Rowan Wilson, an associate judge on the Court of Appeals, was named as chief judge of the same court, overseeing the state's sprawling state judicial system. If confirmed, Wilson would be the first Black judge in the post, replacing Janet DiFiore who stepped down in August. "Judge Wilson's sterling record of upholding justice and fairness makes him well-suited to lead the court at this critical time," Hochul said in a statement. Hochul nominated Caitlin Halligan, a former New York solicitor general and current partner at law firm Selendy Gay Elsberg, to fill Wilson's current role. Wilson was nominated to the Court of Appeals by former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, in 2017.
A federal judge rejected Universal Studios' motion to dismiss a lawsuit claiming it misled fans. Movie fans filed a class action suit in January claiming they were tricked into watching the film. They sued Universal because actress Ana de Armas was in the trailer, but didn't appear in the movie. A California district court judge, Stephen V. Wilson, is letting a class action suit filed earlier this year proceed after Universal Studios asked for it be dismissed. Judge Wilson said that the moviegoers were not given "any value for their rental or purchase", per the filing, and lawyers will meet again for the case in April.
