Xeneta ocean freight rates show the rallying spot market and the widening spread between spot and long-term rates. An increase in ocean freight rejections shows the imbalance. Logistics price increases are ultimately passed onto the consumer and the dizzying freight rates during the pandemic were among factors cited by the Federal Reserve as a cause of inflation. The International Chamber of Shipping, which represents major ocean carriers, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Flaring labor tensions at West Coast ports are sparking fears of growing work stoppages that would hobble the flow of goods through some of the country’s biggest trade gateways as importers prepare for the year’s busiest shipping season. Jonathan Gold , vice president for supply chain at the National Retail Federation, said importers are increasingly concerned about a series of targeted labor actions that have disrupted major ports while contract talks between employers and dockworkers approach the one-year mark with little sign of progress.

Around 20,000 dockworkers at West Coast ports, including Los Angeles and Long Beach, have been working without a contract since July 1. The jam at the West Coast ports delayed Americans getting goods and sent prices higher as demand outpaced supply. But until the labor dispute is resolved on the West Coast, it will be a challenge to lure importers back.

The Y Combinator-backed Web3 startup Courtyard has raised $7 million in seed funding led by NEA. Nicolas le Jeune was working at YouTube when he caught the NFT bug. Long-stalled West Coast port labor talks are showing no signs of progress, according to people familiar with the negotiations, extending uncertainty for U.S. retailers who rely on the coast to import goods from Asia. Some importers have been diverting furniture, clothes and electronics to East Coast and Gulf Coast ports in case the labor talks break down and lead to work disruptions or a strike. He said many retailers will likely plan to continue diverting goods to Gulf Coast and East Coast ports until they can be sure an agreement can be reached. There has been little impact on cargo operations at the ports during the contract talks beyond sporadic work disruptions at container terminals in Los Angeles and in Washington. People familiar with the talks say the sides are hung up on issues related to work in Seattle.
