Kansas Republicans are coming under fire for holding a fund-raiser on Friday evening at which attendees physically assaulted an effigy resembling President Biden, according to video footage shared on social media over the weekend. A video of the event shows attendees hitting and kicking what appears to be a body opponent bag — a lifelike mannequin with a head and torso often used for self-defense training — with a mask resembling Mr. Biden’s face. The mannequin was dressed in a T-shirt that said “Let’s Go Brandon,” a phrase understood to be code for swearing at Mr. Biden. Attendees also appeared to hit karate breaking boards that had the same derogatory phrase. That footage, originally posted on the online video platform Rumble, according to The Star, has been taken down, but clips have been shared by accounts like “Republicans against Trump” on X.

Left out was the political director who was responsible for Johnson County Iowa, the area home to the University of Iowa. Trump lost the county by just a single vote to former UN ambassador Nikki Haley. Some conservatives in the area refer to it as "The People's Republic of Johnson County." But even Branstad failed to win Johnson County in his 2014 general election rout — just like Trump, he went 98 out of 99. Ron DeSantis, who made it a point to visit every single county.

Change in Trump’s share of the vote from 2016 to 2024Change in Trump’s share of the vote from 2016 to 2024Change in Trump’s share of the vote from 2016 to 2024Donald Trump notched a convincing win in the Iowa caucuses, besting his nearest rival by nearly 30 points and more than doubling his support in the state from 2016, when he lost to Republican Sen. Ted Cruz . The decisive victory had Trump winning 98 of the state’s 99 counties—losing Johnson County to Nikki Haley by a single vote. The Republican front-runner saw his biggest improvement over 2016 in counties that reflected his core supporters: older voters, those without a college degree, lower-income voters and evangelicals.

At first blush, it seemed to many to be the key to picking former President Donald Trump's lock on the Hawkeye State's Republican base. The alternative vote split roughly in two, leaving Republican Iowa firmly in Trump's hands as the first ballots of the 2024 presidential contest were cast. Trump does not thrive among suburban voters, a group that cost Trump nationally in 2020 and where Haley showed promise Monday. Haley, by contrast, beat Trump in Johnson County, Iowa, a burgeoning tract of homes and businesses along Interstate 80 south of Cedar Rapids. A week earlier, Trump volunteer Jackie Garlock looked around a similar hall in Mason City in northern Iowa on a snowy Saturday, convinced Trump would win.

Better still for Mr. Trump, neither Mr. DeSantis nor Ms. Haley posted a strong second-place showing that might have bestowed clear momentum for future races. He also excelled among white evangelical Christians and self-described “very conservative” voters — two groups that held him back here eight years ago. Mr. DeSantis was dealt a serious setback to his already ailing candidacy. No upcoming contest plainly offers Mr. DeSantis a better chance of victory, and his poll numbers are even weaker in the states ahead. Either way, Ms. Haley has overtaken Mr. DeSantis as Mr. Trump’s nearest, if still distant, rival.

The ruling was another big victory for abortion rights advocates in Kansas, where a statewide vote in August 2022 decisively confirmed protections for abortion access under the state constitution. Jayaram concluded that the restrictions now on hold violate a patient's right to bodily autonomy. A law that took effect July 1 required abortion providers to tell their patients that a medication abortion can be stopped using a regimen touted by anti-abortion groups. Abortion opponents argued repeatedly before the August 2022 vote that without a change in the state constitution, all existing abortion restrictions could be at risk. The state Supreme Court is reviewing a 2015 law banning the most common second-trimester procedure and a 2011 law imposing tougher health and safety requirements only for abortion providers.

The Department of Justice announced Wednesday that it has recently charged 78 people with $2.5 billion in separate health-care fraud and opioid abuse schemes. The defendants allegedly defrauded programs used to take care of elderly and disabled people, and in some cases used the ill-gotten money to buy exotic cars, jewelry, and yachts, the DOJ said. Among those charged are 11 defendants accused of submitting $2 billion in fraudulent claims through telemedicine, as well as 10 defendants charged in connection with fraudulent prescription drug claims. In all, prosecutors filed charges against people in 16 states in cases that were lodged or unsealed in the past two weeks as part of the coordinated crackdown. In the scheme cited by Garland, executives of supposed software and services companies submitted $1.9 billion in fraudulent claims to Medicare for items that were not eligible for reimbursement, according to the DOJ.

Walker was "shocked" he didn't 100% of the vote in his home county last month, per The Daily Beast. The Republican carried Johnson County 74%-26% over Warnock, but was still taken aback by the result. While Walker received 2,484 votes to Warnock's 869 votes in Johnson County in November, Kemp earned 2,504 votes compared to Abrams' 867 votes. On Tuesday, Warnock defeated Walker in the runoff 51.4%-48.6%, earning a full six-year term in the Senate and denying Republicans a much-desired win. And Warnock gained ground in Johnson County in the runoff compared to the November election, winning 967 votes (29%) to Walker's 2,419 votes (71%).
Olive Garden has parted ways with a manager who told staff who called in sick to find another job. The manager told staff in a message they'd need to "prove if their dog had died", KCTV5 reported. An Olive Garden spokesperson said the message didn't align with the company's values. In a statement to KCTV5, an Olive Garden spokesperson confirmed that the restaurant chain had "parted ways" with the manager who wrote the letter. Olive Garden did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.
And Walker’s campaign told NBC News that it has ordered 1,000 imitation plastic law enforcement badges that say “I’m with Herschel” as a fundraising tool. “Herschel Walker has been a friend to law enforcement and has a record of honoring police,” said Gail Gitcho, the Walker campaign strategist who ordered the badges Saturday. "It just gives us a chance to talk about Herschel’s support of law enforcement and law enforcement's support for him. If he said, ‘I’m a law enforcement officer and I have these powers,’ then I have a problem with that. Asked whether he had a problem with Walker’s flashing the honorary badge onstage, Wilcher said: “No.
Herschel Walker, the Republican candidate for Senate in Georgia, explained why he flashed a badge during Friday’s debate with Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock in an exclusive interview with NBC News' Kristen Welker. Herschel Walker spoke exclusively with NBC News’ Kristen Welker on why he flashed a police badge during a televised debate which aired on Oct. 14, 2022. NBC“I have badges all over the state of Georgia,” Walker said, noting he also had an “honorary sheriff badge” from Chatham County, where Warnock is from. "I have more more sheriff than have supported Herschel Walker, more sheriffs support Herschel Walker in Georgia than any candidate running today.”Walker then repeatedly denied having embellished his connection to law enforcement. “I’m right because I have worked in law enforcement, and I’ve been working with law enforcement,” Walker said.
“It’s a lie,” Walker, an anti-abortion Republican and former football star, told NBC News in an interview airing Monday on "TODAY." Just to show me things like that does nothing for me.”In Sunday’s interview, Walker acknowledged the $700 check was his but again said he had no knowledge of what the money might have been for. The woman told NBC News that this was the only payment Walker ever sent her prior to having their child. Walker, during a debate with Warnock on Friday, said he supported a Georgia abortion ban that provides exceptions for rape, incest and when the mother’s life is at risk. “That is a legit badge,” Walker said.
While debating Senator Raphael Warnock, candidate Herschel Walker flashed a "prop" police badge in violation of the rules. While discussing their reputations working with law enforcement, Warnock noted Walker's past false claims of serving as a police officer, prompting Walker to flash the badge. "I said I worked with law enforcement, which I have," Walker told NewsNation, displaying the badge from Johnson County he had held up earlier. "I never said I went out to do anything, but I have worked with every law enforcement around the county." It is unclear whether Walker's badge is official or an honorary title akin to the one he had from Cobb County.
Walker spoke of getting his start playing football in Johnson County and then making his way to the University of Georgia and pro football. He said that if he is re-elected he will fight to expand Medicaid in Georgia. And I think the people of Georgia have a real choice about who they think is ready to represent them in the United States Senate," Warnock told reporters Thursday, without directly addressing the abortion story. Warnock's allies, meanwhile, see the question more as a battle between Walker and Georgia voters — why give his opponent a chance to bring him into the story? What’s “very important” to her is Democrats’ holding the Senate and fighting GOP "extremism."
