YOU CAN’T BUY razors at CVS these days without enduring a certain indignity, in that you need to ask for help. So rife has shoplifting apparently become that the stores lock their shaving supplies in cabinets. You must press a big red button that might as well say, “I need an adult.” An employee eventually wanders over with a key, and you find yourself questioning why you’re going through all this for a flimsy, not-even-that-cheap piece of plastic.
Maggie McCormick, office manager, 1985-1993: There were just so many moments at Paper when you knew the world was being changed. Fenton Bailey, producer, former Paper columnist: The vibe was, “Hip-hop is a fad. Dennis Dermody, film critic, 1986-2017: I got a call from David Hershkovits. For a certain kind of fashion fiend, it was a dream: shop the actress Chloë Sevigny’s closet, with her present. Ms. Sevigny, lauded as a fashion influencer and enthusiast, held a sale on Mother’s Day in a studio space in the NoHo neighborhood of Manhattan. Customers had the chance to buy items from Ms. Sevigny’s own wardrobe, Academy New York, pieces she had designed with Opening Ceremony, and costumes from various roles. “I decided to properly care for or store some things in Los Angeles,” said Ms. Sevigny, who wore a black Comme des Garçons shirtdress and Manolo Blahnik slides. “And then there was a lot left over and I was like, you know what, I’m 48, I’m a mother, there’s a lot of stuff I don’t want to wear anymore.
MANY MEN—and perhaps you’re one—give summer socks a lot more thought than such tiny scraps of fabric might seem to deserve. The key question: Should you wear visible socks (hardly the breeziest or sexiest summer look), or choose “no-show” designs that hide inside your shoes, leaving ankles to lap up the sun’s rays? These invisible socks can be infuriating—constantly slipping underfoot, scrunching into a ball that wreaks havoc beneath your arches. What’s more, they have slipped out of fashion in recent years. This summer, you’ll likely spot more stylish guys wearing tall, ribbed tube socks than flashing their ankle bones.
