President-elect Donald Trump on Monday selected former Rep. Lee Zeldin of New York to oversee the Environmental Protection Agency in his administration. In a statement announcing the appointment, Trump described the former four-term House Republican from Long Island as "a true fighter for America First policies." We will do so while protecting access to clean air and water," Zeldin said in a statement on X. The New York Post first reported Zeldin's appointment — Trump's second Cabinet pick for his second term in office. Zeldin was heralded by Republicans for an unexpectedly close race for New York governor in 2022, when he lost to Democrat Kathy Hochul 53.1% to 46.7%.

SEOUL, South Korea — As foreign governments prepare to deal with a second Trump administration, at least one key U.S. ally is hoping to make headway on the fairway. Last month, the U.S. and South Korea agreed on a new five-year cost-sharing plan for the U.S. troops. Maintaining a strong security alliance with the U.S. is especially important for South Korea given the growing hostility from nuclear-armed North Korea. TOKYO — Lawmakers in Japan voted Monday to retain the embattled Shigeru Ishiba as prime minister despite his long-governing party’s dismal showing in parliamentary elections last month. Ishiba, a straight-talking former defense minister, received 221 votes compared with 160 for Yoshihiko Noda, leader of the opposition Constitutional Democratic Party. Many Japanese officials assume Trump is going to be “more straightforwardly anti-China,” and that Japan will be “somehow miraculously left off the hook,” he said. Though Japan has already pledged to double defense spending to 2% of gross domestic product by 2027, “that’s probably not going to be enough to satisfy Trump,” Boling said. While Abe was “extraordinarily skillful” in dealing with Trump, Ishiba has a different personality, Boling said.

CNN —Given his rhetoric demonizing undocumented immigrants and his promise to engage in mass deportations when he returns to the White House in January, it’s kind of shocking that deportations actually dropped in the four years Donald Trump was president. Appearing Monday on Fox News, Homan said Trump 2.0 will be like his first term but with more deportations. During his first term, Trump also promised mass deportations. But that’s about half the 2.9 million deportations undertaken during Barack Obama’s first term and fewer than the 1.9 million deportations during Obama’s second term. CNN —The United States has carried out a second consecutive night of strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, a US defense official said Sunday. Details of the types of weapons, targets or locations of the strikes were not immediately available, though there were reports of explosions in the Amran and Saada governorates, north of the capital of Sanaa, where the US has carried out strikes in the past. They say they won’t stop striking Israel and its allies until a ceasefire is reached in the Palestinian enclave. The US has struck Houthis targets in Yemen multiple times over the last 11 months but the attacks have continued. In mid-October, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced that the US struck the militant group using stealth B-2 bombers for the first time.

Over the years, Mary DeBardelaben reached out to an organization that documented civil rights abuses in the Jim Crow era but without much success. It was stuffed with 69 pages of federal documents detailing Hattie DeBardelaben’s final moments. Mary DeBardelaben keeps a binder of everything she's learned about her grandmother, including this March 1945 newspaper story about her killing. As in the other photos, Hattie DeBardelaben stares at the camera without any hint of a smile.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said Sunday that she has “no intention” of dropping the criminal case against a group of President-elect Donald Trump’s allies who sought to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Arizona. “I have no intention of breaking that case up.
