The start of former President Donald Trump's impeachment trial in the US Senate could be held up due to the ex-president not having any legal representation to defend him, CNN reported. WASHINGTON — Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio comes from a duck-shaped district that stretches across parts of 14 counties and five media markets and would take nearly three hours to drive end to end. Designed after the 2010 census by Ohio Republicans intent on keeping Mr. Jordan, then a three-term congressman, safely in office, the district has produced the desired result. The outlines of Ohio’s Fourth Congressional District have left Mr. Jordan, like scores of other congressional and state lawmakers, accountable only to his party’s electorate in Republican primaries. That phenomenon encouraged the Republican Party’s fealty to President Trump as he pushed his baseless claims of election fraud. That unwavering loyalty was evident on Jan. 6, when Mr. Jordan and 138 other House Republicans voted against certifying Joseph R. Biden Jr. as the winner of the presidential election.

Widen After Impeachment Vote Some House Republicans have called on Representative Liz Cheney to resign from her leadership post after she voted to impeach President Trump. Representative Liz Cheney had issued a scathing statement the day before the impeachment vote repudiating President Trump. Mr. Biden will detail his proposal, which he and his economic team have been honing for weeks, in an evening speech in Delaware. “This nation also remains in the grip of a deadly virus and a reeling economy,” Mr. Biden said Wednesday. Far more of a party institutionalist, Mr. Biden has promised to rebuild state parties and deepen investments in the committee.

The Senate’s Republican majority leader, Mitch McConnell, rejected Democratic calls for a quick impeachment trial, saying there was no way to conclude it before Trump leaves office. But even if he has left the White House, a Senate conviction of Trump could lead to a vote on banning him from running for office again. During his speech, Trump repeated false claims that the election was fraudulent and exhorted supporters to march on the Capitol. In a video statement released after the vote, Trump did not mention the impeachment vote and took no responsibility for his remarks to supporters last week, but condemned the violence. Wednesday’s article of impeachment accused Trump of “incitement of insurrection,” saying he provoked violence against the U.S. government in his speech to supporters.

The GOP lawmakers defending Trump cited one line from his January 6 speech as purported evidence that he did not provoke the Capitol siege. House Republicans on Wednesday repeatedly pointed to this line in defense of Trump, emphasizing that the president used the word "peacefully." They ignored how the rest of Trump's speech was an incitement to riot, and cancelled out the brief moment the president called for peaceful demonstrations. The speech riled up Trump's supporters, who subsequently swarmed the Capitol. Trump's supporters could be heard chanting "hang Mike Pence" amid the riot.
