In China, families who signed a settlement agreement with Malaysian Airlines received 2.5 million yuan ($350,000) in compensation. Only a few dozen Chinese families signed initially, but over the years more have opted to settle.

CNN —The United States has condemned China’s reported sentencing of prominent Uyghur academic Rahile Dawut to life in prison, calling for the immediate release of the scholar known for documenting folklore and traditions of the Muslim minority in China’s northwestern Xinjiang region. A renowned scholarRahile Dawut is known as a foremost scholar of Uyghur culture, who focused her work on folklore and religious anthropology, including documenting Uyghur pilgrimage to religious shrines throughout Xinjiang. Through her collaborations with international researchers, guest lecturing and teaching, she is credited by international academics with fostering a greater global understanding of Uyghur culture and making key contributions to preserving and documenting Uyghur heritage and architecture. In 2007, Rahile Dawut founded a center focused on folklore at Xinjiang University, where she was a professor. According to San Francisco-based Dui Hua, Rahile Dawut was tried in 2018 of for “splittism” or political separatism – a crime of endangering state security.

Rui Jiang, 35, was arrested Sunday at the Park Valley Church in Haymarket, Virginia, the Prince William County Police Department said in a statement. The Prince William County Public Defender’s Office declined to identify his attorney to CNN. Jiang wasn’t at the residence, but investigators were also able to give a description of his vehicle to officers in Prince William County. Letters and other documents related to the case were found in Jiang’s home, Prince William County Police Sgt. “We are equally grateful for the coordination with Fairfax County Police Department and Prince William County Police Department to bring this individual into custody.

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Protests against China’s restrictive Covid-19 measures appeared to roil in a number of cities Saturday night, in displays of public defiance fanned by anger over a deadly fire in the western Xinjiang region. A protester who gave only his family name, Zhao, said one of his friends was beaten by police and two friends were pepper sprayed. Posts about the protest were deleted immediately on China’s social media, as China’s Communist Party commonly does to suppress criticism. The Associated Press could not independently verify all the videos, but two Urumqi residents who declined to be named out of fear of retribution said large-scale protests occurred Friday night. The AP pinpointed the locations of two of the videos of the protests in different parts of Urumqi.

In Beijing, hundreds of mostly young people demonstrated in the commercial heart of the city well into the small hours of Monday.
