“Art is one of our oldest creations (humans invented paint long before the wheel), one of the earliest means of communication (we drew long, long, long, long before we could write), and one of our most universal urges,” she wrote. But when you watch artists making art, it is a physical experience. Different art forms affect the brain and body in different ways. Just as when we are prescribed medications, (it’s true that) types, doses and durations of art work differently for different people. "Look Again" authors Tali Sharot (left) and Cass R. Sunstein explore how seeing things with fresh eyes can improve happiness, relationships, work and community. The blessing comes as diminished sensitivity to negative stimuli; the curse is that insensitivity relieves the pressure to change things and maybe make life better. CNN: What do you recommend for people considering big life changes? Sunstein: The data we have suggests, if you’re seriously thinking of making a life change, you probably should. Research shows that when people on the fence about moving to a different city, taking a new job or some other big life change do take the plunge, they report being better off months later.

Americans spend, on average, more than two and a half hours on social media each day. His book offers practical strategies for stepping back, reevaluating and unsubscribing from the ideas, habits and tech engagements that keep us from happiness. Advances in health care, like cutting-edge diagnostic tools, are just one example of the incredible benefits of the tech revolution. The crushing pace of technology doesn’t allow for the milliseconds it takes for us to be conscious enough to step back. This is a tall task, but I believe the more people can hear that voice, the healthier our society will be.

Hübl: First off, trauma often gets conflated with adversity itself, but it’s actually how our nervous system responds to a distressing experience. Our nervous system is trying to keep us safe. When we go through an overwhelming experience that the nervous system cannot process, we lose our relationship to life in that moment. These reactions can get frozen into our nervous system so that triggering circumstances stir up trauma responses. This helps me train my nervous system to strengthen pathways for self-awareness, creating an inner mindfulness.

Poem: “Bride” by Maggie Smith Source: Simon & SchusterSince then, a huge response to her poetry and prose, including two recent bestsellers, “Keep Moving” and “Goldenrod,” has elevated her to celebrity poet status. CNN: You have said that writing about your divorce has turned you into “a divorce whisperer.” How so? Smith's recent memoir, "You Could Make This Place Beautiful" tackles divorce as well as common family terrain. If someone is going through a breakup, I tell them to remember that they predated, and have outlasted, the relationship. There’s no place I can go here where there isn’t a reminder of something that came before.
