Carey Halio, Goldman Sachs' head of strategy and investor relations, is getting promoted to global treasurer at the bank, according to people familiar with the matter. She will report to Denis Coleman, Goldman Sachs' chief financial officer. Prior to running strategy and investor relations, Halio was the CEO of Goldman Sachs Bank USA and deputy treasurer of Goldman Sachs. Jehan Ilahi, who worked with Halio for years in strategy and investor relations, will become head of investor relations. Goldman Sachs is slated to report first-quarter earnings on Monday.

KARACHI, Pakistan, April 22 (Reuters) - Noor Jehan, an elephant in Pakistan's Karachi Zoo whose illness revived criticisms of the nation's zoos, died on Saturday despite frantic efforts to treat her, officials said. The critically ill 17-year-old elephant had fallen into a pond this month and been unable to get up without help. The director of the Karachi Zoo was removed this month over complaints of negligence. A court in 2020 ordered the closure of the Islamabad Zoo, where the elephant Kaavan was kept. Khalil said Karachi Zoo did not meet international standards and urged that Madhubala, the healthy elephant remaining at the zoo, be relocated to a more species-appropriate place to give her a chance at a better life.

LONDON, March 2 (Reuters) - An American computer scientist on Thursday urged the United Kingdom’s Supreme Court to rule he is entitled to patents over inventions created by his artificial intelligence system, in a landmark case about whether AI can own patent rights. Stephen Thaler wants to be granted two patents in the UK over inventions he says were devised by his “creativity machine” called DABUS. Stuart Baran said in written arguments that the British government had recently conducted a public consultation on how AI-created inventions should be dealt with under the UK patent system and decided not to change the law. Thaler’s Supreme Court appeal marks the first time the issue of whether AI systems can own and transfer patent rights has been considered by a supreme-level court, according to London-based patent lawyer Mark Marfé, who is not involved in the case. “Ultimately, for a machine to be named as an inventor of a patent, patent laws will need to be amended,” Marfé said in a statement before the hearing.
