WASHINGTON — Amid the sea of troubling facts, arrests and iconic images that have emerged in the days since the assault on the Capitol, one element remains largely absent: reassurances from some of the nation’s top national security officials. Neither the acting attorney general, Jeffrey A. Rosen, nor the F.B.I. director, Christopher A. Wray, has appeared at the type of high-profile news conference that typically marks a major criminal investigation, instead issuing news releases. Mr. Rosen also called for calm and vowed to fully investigate the violence, but the comments came in a video posted by the Justice Department on YouTube around midnight. Chad F. Wolf, the departing acting secretary of homeland security, was in the Middle East during the siege and did not return until later in the week.

The U.S. attorney in Washington initially refused to rule out investigating Mr. Trump’s role in the riot. The deadly storming of the Capitol by Mr. Trump’s supporters transformed the politics of Washington in ways that were still hard to measure. The December call to the investigator, like the call Mr. Trump made to Mr. Raffensperger, was recorded, the official said. Mr. Trump had pressured Mr. Pence publicly and privately to overturn the certifications and throw them back to the states so that Mr. Trump could try to undo results in states that Mr. Biden won. Parler is one of several upstarts that have courted President Trump’s supporters with promises of “unbiased” and “free speech” social networks.

Mr. Biden also named three other top Justice Department officials in addition to Judge Garland. The New York Times on Friday repudiated its prominent 2018 podcast titled “Caliphate” that featured an alleged Islamic State executioner and will reassign Rukmini Callimachi, the reporter who led the series. In September, the Times noted on Friday, Mr. Chaudhry was arrested by Canadian police and charged with perpetrating a terrorist hoax. Efforts to reach Nader R. Hasan, an attorney for Mr. Chaudhry, were unsuccessful. Mr. Hasan told the Times that Mr. Chaudhry would oppose the hoax charge. On Friday afternoon, the Peabody organization said the Times would return its 2018 Peabody Award for “Caliphate” following its internal review.

The fact President-elect Joe Biden faces so many massive, complicated problems means he has an opportunity to become one of America's greatest presidents, presidential historians say. Biden has placed great emphasis on his first 100 days, a period of time used to take the temperature of a new presidential administration since the days of FDR. But as Biden sets an ambitious early agenda, experts caution against placing too much stock in the 100-day standard. 'A sense of urgency'President Franklin D. Roosevelt Bettmann/Getty ImagesFor decades, Americans have used a president's first 100 days in office as a barometer for how they'll fare as commander-in-chief. "The first 100 days is definitely linked to a sense of urgency and also to the idea that a new administration, usually from a new party, means change.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Incoming acting U.S. Attorney General Jeffrey A. Rosen declined to say on Wednesday whether he would name special counsels to investigate President Donald Trump’s claims of election fraud or the tax issues of President-elect Joe Biden’s son Hunter. During his expected few weeks in the top job, Rosen said “I think of it a little bit like a developer with a punch list. On Dec. 9, Hunter Biden said the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware is investigating his tax affairs. It’s not like starting from scratch,” Rosen told Reuters. “It’s not proper for people to make the decision on their own to disclose classified information,” Rosen said.

A year ago, John Radford had little control over the book selection at the Barnes & Noble store he manages in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Mr. Radford had to stock dozens of James Patterson and John Grisham books, even though there wasn’t that much local demand. Led by Chief Executive James Daunt, Barnes & Noble Inc. is abandoning the strategy that made it a bookselling behemoth two decades ago—uniformity designed to create economies of scale and simplify the shopping experience. Instead, the company is empowering store managers to curate their shelves based on local tastes. In the process, he has severed decadeslong relationships with publishers who paid to have their books placed in stores.

WASHINGTON — Purdue Pharma pleaded guilty on Tuesday to criminal charges that it misled the federal government about sales of its blockbuster painkiller OxyContin, the prescription opioid that helped fuel a national addiction crisis. The admission brought a formal end to an extensive federal investigation that led to a multibillion-dollar settlement between the company and the Justice Department. “The abuse and diversion of prescription opioids has contributed to a national tragedy of addiction and deaths,” Jeffrey A. Rosen, the deputy attorney general, said in a statement. Purdue also pleaded guilty to paying illegal kickbacks to doctors who prescribed OxyContin and to an electronic health records company, Practice Fusion, for targeting physicians with alerts that were intended to increase opioid prescriptions. Practice Fusion has paid $145 million in fines for taking those kickbacks.
