OpenAI is now worth $157 billion, but it can't rest easy yet. Now comes the hard part: emerging victorious in a fiercely competitive AI industry. Though Sam Altman's company cemented its status as a frontrunner in the generative AI boom this week, securing a new $157 billion valuation after raising $6.6 billion of fresh capital from marquee investors, its leading position is hardly guaranteed. Sure, Altman's company now casts a massive shadow over the industry with its fresh $157 billion valuation. AI companies have been spending huge sums to purchase chips from Jensen Huang's Nvidia.

Members of the California Legislative Black Caucus heralded his signature on four bills, including an apology for the state’s role in promoting slavery. In his remarks, Newsom said the bill could not function without the accompanying Freedmen Affairs Agency, which would have been established by another one of Bradford’s bills. The centerpiece of Bradford’s reparations package was the Freedmen Affairs Agency, which would have overseen state reparations initiatives. By the final hours of the legislative session, dozens of protesters had gathered in the lobby of the Capitol to support Bradford’s bills. Read previewJensen Huang faces a monumental task as he takes center stage at a Goldman Sachs event on Wednesday: getting AI investors to stop panicking. However, there are signs suggesting that investors are getting pretty angsty over the future of Nvidia and AI more broadly. The markets are in a panic over AINvidia has been a powerhouse at the center of the generative AI boom. First, Nvidia's 122% year-on-year revenue growth in the last quarter was smaller than the 262% growth it recorded in the previous quarter. Hal Lawton, the chief executive of the Brentwood, Tennessee-based company, had said these initiatives “make great business sense for Tractor Supply.”But Tractor Supply has decided that all of those risks are now worth ignoring. By walking away from diversity and climate goals, Tractor Supply has become the latest corporate giant to retreat from progressive initiatives it once promoted, joining Bud Light, Target and others. Tractor Supply declined to comment on these statements. Tractor Supply’s customer base has historically been primarily older men, who lean Republican, but Tractor Supply has increasingly tried to draw Millennials and women, who tend to favor Democrats. Tractor Supply’s reversal could hurt it with these customers, who could be crucial as the company’s historic base ages out of the market.

Nearly an hour later, the iPhone maker announced a much-rumored partnership with OpenAI to bring its ChatGPT technology to devices later this year. “I think Apple will take a pragmatic approach to the OpenAI partnership,” Wood said. Apple said it will not share any personal user information with OpenAI, so inquiries made through ChatGPT won’t be linked to an Apple user’s account. So it came as no surprise when some industry watchers, including Elon Musk, were quick to react to Apple’s partnership with OpenAI. “When users do query ChatGPT, Apple will track the prompts and gather metrics to improve its own models,” he said.

China’s President Xi Jinping met with the heads of American businesses in San Francisco earlier this month. Photo: Jeff Chiu/Associated PressBroadcom Chief Executive Hock Tan shelled out $40,000 to sit at Xi Jinping ’s table for the Chinese leader’s recent dinner in San Francisco with the heads of American businesses. Tan had a lot more at stake—a $69 billion deal he was waiting on China to approve. For months, Chinese regulators wouldn’t clear the U.S. chipmaker’s bid to buy enterprise software developer VMware, leading Broadcom to put off its date for completion of the deal—first announced in May 2022—three times. Intel’s planned acquisition of Israeli firm Tower Semiconductor , for more than $5 billion, was scuttled in August after Chinese regulators failed to approve it.

But it also shows how Apple has wrestled with Google’s rise and how some at Apple yearned for “optionality.” Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. (Last week, Nadella testified that he has spent every year of his tenure as CEO trying to persuade Apple to adopt Bing.) He made a similar argument internally about DuckDuckGo, saying in an email that moving ahead with that partnership was “probably a bad idea.” (DuckDuckGo licenses search results from Bing.) Still, Giannandrea testified, some within Apple thought that dealing with Bing in some fashion could yield benefits to Apple. Apple today has the enormous resources to build a true rival to Google, Giannandrea testified.

Anchor got its start in 1896 in San Francisco, becoming the nation’s first-ever craft brewery. Under Sapporo’s ownership, production of Anchor’s beer declined every year except in 2021, according to the Brewers Association. Fed policy makers have been arguing that a drop in the number of job vacancies could effectively cool off the job market. Companies can now feature their packaged cannabis products in their ads. Previously they could advertise their businesses and link out to websites but couldn’t depict the actual products they sold. The company has also increased the number of states where advertisers can target consumers for medical and recreational cannabis.
