CNN —A New York appeals court is set to hear arguments Thursday in former President Donald Trump’s bid to have the $454 million civil fraud judgment against him dismissed. The appellate hearing is yet another legal development for Trump playing out the same time as his presidential campaign hits the homestretch. In addition to the civil fraud appeal, Trump’s lawyers have argued to dismiss the guilty verdict in the New York criminal case, the federal election interference case in Washington, DC, and the E. Jean Carroll defamation verdict – all in the past month. The judgment against Trump was for $354 million, with an additional $100 million in interest that had accrued when the judge’s ruling was issued in February. “The award of $464 million in a case with no victims, no proven injuries, and no losses is not remotely defensible,” Trump’s lawyers wrote.

From putting your toddler children on your payroll to claiming your car as a business expense, TikTok is chock-full of potentially bad money advice. Yet, financial TikTok, also known as #FinTok, is one of the most popular sources for financial information and tips, particularly among Generation Z. Now, 27% of social media users say they have fallen for financial advice or information on social media that turned out to be false or misleading, according to a new report by Edelman Financial Engines. Edelman Financial Engines polled more than 3,000 adults over 30 from June to July. Heavy social media users, likely younger Americans, may be particularly susceptible to believing inaccurate financial information found there, according to Edelman Financial Engines.

Trump's arguments for overturning his $454M civil fraud verdict received a warm reception Thursday. Trump attorney D. John Sauer has made this line drawing a central point of his appeal. The appeal argues that James' fraud case wrongly interfered in the decisions of "sophisticated" banks that had been happy to loan Trump money regardless of any exaggerations. Deutsche Bank relied on Trump's financial statements in loaning him $400 million to develop his Chicago skyscraper, his Washington, DC hotel, and his Miami golf resort. Advertisement"And I will stress, your honor, that this does have harm to the public and the markets," she said of Trump's persistent financial frauds.

“Women will be happy, healthy, confident and free,” he said during an extended riff at the rally. And then he asserted: “You will no longer be thinking about abortion.”A spokeswoman for the Harris campaign, Sarafina Chitika, said that “women know better.”“He tries to tell us what to think and what we care about,” Ms. Chitika said. On Monday night, he repeated that the court’s ruling returned authority to the states to determine their own limits on abortion, a move that he said that many Americans had favored for decades. “Everyone wanted abortion out of the federal government and into the states,” he said. Mr. Trump also repeated a falsehood that he amplified during his debate against Ms. Harris earlier this month, saying that Democrats had been demanding abortions in the ninth month of a pregnancy or “an execution of a baby after birth.”

CNN —A critical witness in the original trial of disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has announced she will testify in his upcoming retrial on criminal charges. After Weinstein’s conviction was overturned earlier this year, Mimi Haley, a former production assistant on The Weinstein Company’s “Project Runway,” said she wasn’t sure if she wanted to go through it all again. Haley alleged that Weinstein had pinned her down and forced her into a sex act in 2006 at his Manhattan apartment. Last week, he was indicted in Manhattan in connection to new sexual assault allegations, according to prosecutors. If he is cleared to attend the hearing, Weinstein is expected to be arraigned on the new indictment.

New York CNN —As Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump take the stage Tuesday night in Philadelphia in their first face-to-face meeting, the spotlight will also shine on the host of the debate: ABC News. And Trump’s campaign had already accepted the debate rules as sent out by ABC News’ general counsel. But ABC executives remained confident both candidates would show up, and ultimately, the Harris campaign relented. In the days ahead of the debate, Trump has attacked the network, questioning its impartiality. Read previewAt a press conference at Trump Tower in Manhattan on Friday, former President Donald Trump wanted the world to know he would never have sexually assaulted Jessica Leeds. "She would not have been the chosen one," he told reporters, implying her appearance wasn't up to his standards. On Monday, Leeds held a press conference of her own to confront him on that insult. With Trump Tower as her backdrop, she called the GOP presidential candidate "a sexual predator" and said she is deciding whether to sue him. CNN —Harvey Weinstein was “rushed” to Bellevue Hospital in New York on Sunday night “due to several medical conditions,” according to representatives for the disgraced former movie producer. “We can confirm that Mr. Weinstein had a procedure and surgery on his heart today,” Weinstein’s spokesman Juda Engelmayer and prison consultant Craig Rothfeld said in a statement to CNN on Monday. “As we have extensively stated before, Mr. Weinstein suffers a plethora of significant health issues that need ongoing treatment,” they added. Weinstein has experienced a number of health problems in recent years and has appeared in court in a wheelchair. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison, but his conviction was overturned on appeal in April.

CNN —Jessica Leeds, who previously accused Donald Trump of sexual assault and was a trial witness in a high-profile case against the former president, said Monday that she “laughed out loud” when she heard he recently disputed her allegation and said she “would not have been the chosen one.”“I laughed out loud. She said she was seated in first class on an airplane next to Trump in the 1970s when he suddenly began groping her. Leeds said she fought off Trump and moved to the back of the airplane. Earlier this year a separate jury found Trump defamed Carroll when in 2022 he repeated several of the statements he initially made in 2019. Her attorneys argued to the jury that the only way to stop Trump from repeating the statements was to hit him in his pocketbook.

Leeds' allegations weren't part of Carroll's accusations, but the trial judge allowed her testimony because they demonstrated what Carroll's lawyers argued was a pattern of behavior by Trump. The judge who oversaw the trial later said: "Trump 'raped' her as many people commonly understand the word 'rape.'" AdvertisementBut the lawyers who won Weinstein's appeal told Business Insider that what worked for their client probably wouldn't work for Trump. In the May 2023 verdict, the jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation and awarded Carroll $5 million in damages. In the second trial, earlier this year, a separate jury said Trump owed Carroll an additional $83 million in defamation damages. That includes the Jan. 6 and 2020 election interference case brought by special counsel Jack Smith. If Harris wins the election in November, Trump’s Jan. 6 case — though weakened by the Supreme Court — will continue to move toward trial. She is also likely to avoid much discussion of Trump’s handling of classified documents: While a Trump-appointed federal judge dismissed a federal case involving his alleged mishandling of classified documents, the Justice Department has appealed and the case could ultimately survive. While those rules are binding only on the Justice Department, part of Harris’ pitch to voters is that she would respect the lines between the Justice Department and the White House that have existed for decades, since the Watergate scandal. During the Biden administration, the Justice Department appointed another special counsel, a former Trump appointee, who secured the conviction of Biden’s son Hunter Biden on gun charges.

Washington CNN —A federal judge on Wednesday refused to dismiss former President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against ABC News and George Stephanopoulos over the anchor’s assertion that a jury concluded Trump had “raped” E. Jean Carroll. Trump filed the lawsuit in Florida federal court earlier this year, arguing that Stephanopoulos and the network defamed him when Stephanopoulos said during a contentious on-air interview with Rep. Nancy Mace that a jury found Trump had “raped” Carroll, a writer whose own cases against Trump led to him being found liable for sexual abuse. ABC News did not immediately respond to a CNN request for comment. In the Trump-ABC lawsuit, US District Judge Cecilia Altonaga, an appointee of former President George W. Bush, wrote Wednesday that these definitions were different enough to let the case move forced. His analysis necessarily focused on what Carroll had and had not proved at trial, as well as the harm Carroll experienced from (Trump’s) abuse.

A federal judge in Florida on Wednesday allowed former President Donald J. Trump’s defamation suit against ABC News to move forward, rejecting an effort by the television network to dismiss the litigation as spurious. The lawsuit, filed in March, argued that ABC’s star anchor, George Stephanopoulos, defamed Mr. Trump by saying on-air numerous times, in a March 10 segment on “This Week,” that the former president had been found liable for raping the writer E. Jean Carroll. Mr. Trump was found liable last year in a Manhattan civil case for sexually abusing and defaming Ms. Carroll. The jury did not find Mr. Trump liable on a technical charge of rape, which is narrowly defined in New York State law. “But a reasonable jury could conclude Plaintiff was defamed and, as a result, dismissal is inappropriate.”
