Google's Workspace leader Aparna Pappu is stepping down, per an internal memo. "I'm ready for the next opportunity at Google and stepping down from my current role as GM of Workspace," Pappu told staff last week in a memo viewed by Business Insider. Pappu said she would remain in an advisory position for Workspace before transitioning to a new role within Google. Dischler moved to a new role as Google's president of cloud applications earlier this year after 15 years working on Google's ads. AdvertisementThe shake-up comes at a critical time for Google's Workspace business as it tries to get customers to pay for new generative AI features.

Internal Google data obtained by Insider shows the 109 most powerful people within Google Cloud. We built an interactive org chart of the top execs and staff helping Kurian lead the division. When Insider last mapped out the Google Cloud org chart at the start of 2022, it had around 40,000 employees. The Cloud unit has seen some notable departures and reshuffles in recent months. It's been almost a year since Javier Soltero, the head of Google Workspace, departed and was replaced by Aparna Pappu.
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, right, arrives on stage as Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai exits during the Google Cloud Next event in San Francisco on April 9, 2019. Earlier this week, Alphabet said Google's cloud unit generated $191 million in operating profit, after losing a total of $4 billion in 2021 and 2022. Under Kurian's predecessor, VMware co-founder Diane Greene, critics said Google's cloud business hadn't matured enough to handle enterprises even as it was investing heavily to do so. The cloud division includes the Google Cloud Platform, which competes with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, and the Google Workspace productivity software bundle that goes head-to-head with Microsoft Office. Google Cloud technology chief Will Grannis said Kurian's commitment to improving the division's offerings was evident right away.
Many in the industry, including current and former Microsoft and Amazon executives, wonder whether there's a better job for Bell. It could get intense, with Bell going toe-to-toe with Jassy and getting into disputes with Selipsky. "There were two different sets of security products and actually different security organizations that were securing the products for Microsoft," Bell said. While Bell has imported some processes from Amazon, he has introduced them with a "Microsoft flavor," by using Microsoft productivity tools, one person said. "So many decisions get made at Microsoft by looking at PowerPoints, and sometimes those PowerPoints lack details," Rashid, the former Microsoft and Amazon executive, said.
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian spent much of his time at a partner meeting talking about Workspace, tweeted Tony Safoian, CEO of Google Cloud partner SADA Systems. "Around the globe, more than nine million paying organizations, and more than three billion users rely on Google Workspace for communication and collaboration. Other major customers like Deutsche Bank use Google Cloud for cloud infrastructure, but Microsoft Office for collaboration software. Forty-four percent of software procurers whose organization plans to or currently uses Microsoft's collaboration software also use Google Workspace, according to the 2022 Forrester study. While Google Cloud is still unprofitable, it has decreased losses to $480 million, down from $890 million last year.
