Judge Kevin Newsom, a Trump appointee, pushed back against the Fearless Fund's argument that the grants are protected by the First Amendment because they are charitable donations. He asked the Fearless Fund's attorneys whether the same protection would apply to a contest open only to white applicants. “I think that's a pretty simple yes or no,” Newsom said, interrupting when the attorney for the Fearless Fund, Jason Schwartz, started to reply. They’re saying, no, we want all the pie,” Ben Crump, a civil rights attorney who is also representing the Fearless Fund Fund, said a news conference following the hearing. But since the lawsuit was filed, the Fearless Fund has had trouble securing new investment, said co-founder Arian Simone.

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) — Carol Kane really wanted to work with Jason Schwartzman, but the opportunity would require her to step a little outside of her comfort zone. Her character, Carla, is a retired music teacher who wants to get her bat mitzvah. Schwartzman’s Ben is her former student, and currently a cantor, who agrees to help (reluctantly at first). “The idea sounded pretty fascinating,” Kane, 71, said in a recent phone interview. And working with Schwartzman on the complex, loving relationship between Carla and Ben was as good as she hoped.

Everyone had resigned themselves to the fact that “The Hunger Games” ended in 2015. But Suzanne Collins’ Katniss Everdeen saga was over. And while the team was excited about the possibility of working together again, there were some nerves about whether or not there was an appetite for Hunger Games movies “without Katniss,” Lawrence told The Associated Press in a recent interview. And he felt like a star.”For Lucy Gray Baird, the District 12 tribute Snow is assigned to mentor for the 10th Hunger Games, Lawrence already had someone in mind. “Rather than seeing it as a pressure cooker just waiting to explode, I see it as a really big blessing.”Blyth, in his first starring role in Hollywood, felt some pressure.

Earlier this year, Mr. Petrsoric, 78, was working alone around 10 p.m. when 60 or so people filed in after Broadway shows let out. He found himself going back into machine mode, a calm beacon of cocktail efficiency. He expressed his amazement, which Mr. Petrsoric subtly acknowledged, with a hand placed gently to his heart. While he appreciated the accolade, he gives the same polite treatment to the star-struck as to stars like Mr. Broderick, as well as cast members, directors, producers, lyricists and composers from nearby productions. It goes to your brain, and then you see it’s not forever and you’ve got to come down to earth.”Trying to squeeze stories from Mr. Petrsoric while he is on duty rarely bears fruit.

All are available in theaters or on demand. ‘Asteroid City’In theatersThe story: Wes Anderson’s latest follows the staging of a play about the goings-on in a small desert town in the 1950s. The Cannes Film Festival began this week with Maïwenn’s “Jeanne du Barry,” starring Johnny Depp as Louis XV, and ends on May 27 with a new Pixar film, “Elemental.” In between, there will be many screenings, many awkward standing ovations, many awards bestowed. Wes Anderson also has a new one, “Asteroid City,” about a junior stargazing convention. It features many members of the Andersonian repertory — Jason Schwartzman, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody and others. In “Firebrand,” from the Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz, Alicia Vikander plays Catherine Parr, the sixth and final wife of Henry VIII, who’s played by Jude Law. Hirokazu Kore-eda, whose film “Shoplifters” won the Palme d’Or in 2018, has a new film, “Monster.” It stars Sakura Ando from “Shoplifters,” and the composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, who died last month, did the score.
Amazon fired Smalls in March 2020, saying he joined a protest at the Staten Island warehouse where he supervised other workers despite being on paid quarantine after he had close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19. Smalls in the lawsuit says he was targeted because of his race and his advocacy for the warehouse's largely non-white workforce. The 2nd Circuit judges on Tuesday said he failed to back up those claims, echoing a New York federal judge who dismissed the case last year. Smalls and other workers at the warehouse founded the Amazon Labor Union, which in April won the first U.S. union vote in Amazon's 27-year history. Smalls may have believed that Amazon's practices were racially motivated, Schwartz said, but "Amazon is not required to read his mind."
The big investors TPG and the Cardinal Group made a bet on student housing in fall 2020. Investing in student housing seemed like an uncertain wager at best; no one knew when life would go back to normal. That's created an opportunity in niche asset classes, such as student housing, he added. The trend is not likely to end soon, with the cost of college housing on the same upward trajectory as tuition. With students, international and domestic, back at school again, student housing is hotter than ever.
