These were some of Kelly’s signature panels: bold, monochromatic shapes of saturated color in oil on canvas. Jones recalls being struck most of all by what Kelly’s work displaced. It occupied the second floor of the museum’s two-story sculpture court, which had been redesigned the previous year to showcase classical sculpture and painting. “They took down all these other artists to put up this suite,” Jones says. Next April, she will take over the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s roof garden, where she’ll debut her first multiwork outdoor sculptural installation.

Image This year’s women’s race was oddly slow until the last few miles. Tola had arrived in New York with questions about his fitness after he dropped out of the marathon at the world championships in Budapest this summer. When she made her marathon debut in New York last year, she went out fast before struggling to a sixth-place finish. “Sometimes,” Obiri said, “you learn from your mistakes.”She put those lessons to use in Boston earlier this year when she won her first world marathon major. By then, only Obiri, Gidey, Lokedi and two others — Viola Cheptoo, the runner-up in 2021, and Brigid Kosgei, a five-time world marathon major champion — were still in contention.

It was hard to miss Mark Aaron Polger, Alexi Pappas and Masashi Kondo at the New York City Marathon on Sunday. With energy gels and bodega coffees in hand, the crowd made its way to Fort Wadsworth, where thousands of runners congregate each year before running the New York City Marathon. Speed demons wearing Nike Vaporflys and short-shorts mingled with casual runners wearing “Monsters, Inc.” onesies. That’s the record I’m going for. Running is therapeutic, even though I’m going to be running really, really slowly.

The Best Places to Watch the New York City Marathon

The New York City Marathon is a big race for more than 50,000 runners each year, but it is also a community celebration for the New Yorkers who line up along the five-borough course to cheer for the participants. Chris Tempro, a retired New York firefighter, had prepared for the crowds before he ran the marathon in 2021, including writing his name on his shirt so everybody could see it. But the energy and the excitement along the course was beyond anything he had imagined. “As I came down off of the Verrazano Bridge, and into Brooklyn,” Tempro said, he encountered an “incredible party atmosphere, with like thousands and thousands of people cheering and chanting and then calling my name, like for the whole eight miles, nine miles, through Brooklyn.”When the weather, like 2022’s unseasonable warmth, is less than ideal for runners, the crowd support can be even more important. The YouTuber Casey Neistat’s recap of his race last year touched on the importance of a vibrant crowd.

Weather forecastBetween the unseasonable warmth of last year’s marathon day and the rain that has washed out most weekends this fall, weather conditions may be high on runners’ list of concerns.

Bad air can be dangerous, especially if you’re breathing it over a lifetime. In East Asia, years of chronic air pollution is one reason that wearing face masks was common well before the coronavirus pandemic. School children there are used to playing inside on bad air days. In South Korea, would-be presidents have made reducing air pollution part of their campaign platforms. In other cases, urban air has improved because of something that no one saw coming.

The Central Park race in early April came just a week after Moroz had arrived in the United States. Organizers allowed Moroz and Osmankina to start 10 minutes early so he wouldn’t be jostled in the crowded corrals. Just after he finished, Moroz was already looking ahead to his next race: Boston, in two weeks. Even with his slow early progress, Moroz thought he might be able to run on his new blades in Boston. Two days before the race, Moroz was practicing on his new walking prosthetics in Orlando in a parking lot.
Bangkok/Hong Kong CNN —For years, Thailand welcomed legions of Chinese tourists to its golden beaches, shopping districts and striking temples. Three government ministers headed to Bangkok’s international airport earlier this week to personally greet the first group of Chinese tourists to arrive after China lifted travel restrictions. Amazing Thailand always warmly welcomes our Chinese family.”Travelers from a Xiamen Airlines flight being welcomed by Thai officials upon arrival at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok on Jan. 9, 2023. “The arrival of tourists from China, as well as from countries around the world, to Thailand is expected to increase continually. In Thailand, that’s been no exception, with travel companies beginning to reactivate Chinese social marketing campaigns and increase staffing, according to Barnett.
Hong Kong CNN —Kiki Yang brought an empty green suitcase from Shenzhen to Hong Kong this week to load up on new purchases for her family and friends. On Sunday, residents of Hong Kong and mainland China were permitted to resume two-way, quarantine-free travel after three years, albeit in limited numbers. Sa Sa, which counts Hong Kong and Macao combined as its top market, has seen sales roughly halve since 2019. The move is the latest effort by Hong Kong to rebuild its status as a global business hub. Currently, as part of a gradual reopening, Hong Kong has a quota of 60,000 visitor arrivals from mainland China each day.
Even home remedies such as canned peaches are being snapped up by people looking for ways to fight Covid. Macao is another special administrative region of China, while Zhuhai is a southern mainland Chinese city which it borders. Current rules don’t allow medicines to be mailed directly from Hong Kong to mainland China, according to the salespersons. Sending agents directly from Hong Kong, which also shares a land border with the mainland, isn’t feasible due to a lack of available agents, Simon said. In Macao, the drug regulator ordered pharmacies last week to limit purchases of pain relievers, fever medicines and antigen test kits.
Hong Kong CNN —An unprecedented wave of Covid cases in China has sparked panic buying of fever medicines, pain killers, and even home remedies such as canned peaches, leading to shortages online and in stores. Canned yellow peaches, considered a particularly nutritious delicacy in many parts of China, have been snapped up by people looking for ways to fight Covid. Its sudden surge in popularity prompted Dalian Leasun Food, one of the country’s largest canned food manufacturers, to clarify in a Weibo post that canned yellow peaches don’t have any medicinal effect. “Canned yellow peaches ≠ medicines!” the company said in the post published Friday. The drug shortage has spread from mainland China to Hong Kong, a special administrative region which has a separate system of local government.
Run with New York Road Runners’ Team for Kids: This is one of two charity options available. Run with another charity: The race partners with nonprofits to provide charity bibs. Book a tour: Runners outside the United States can book a marathon package that includes race entry through select international tour operators. Run a fast half-marathon or full marathon: Unlike the Boston Marathon, the New York race doesn’t require runners to have run an earlier race in a certain amount of time in order to compete. Qualifying times must be run in 2023, and times run in New York Road Runners races take priority over other competitions.
