California certified its presidential election Friday and appointed 55 electors pledged to vote for Democrat Joe Biden, officially handing him the Electoral College majority needed to win the White House. There have been no suggestions that any of Biden's pledged electors would contemplate not voting for him. Results of the Electoral College vote are due to be received, and typically approved, by Congress on Jan. 6. Trump has fruitlessly tried to stop those states from certifying Biden as the winner and appointing electors for the former vice president. If they don't, the electors appointed by the states' governors — all pledged to Biden in these cases — must be used.

“Nomadland,” Chloé Zhao’s latest film, is nominally a quiet portrait of a working-class woman, Fern (played by Frances McDormand), who lives in her van and works piecemeal manual labor jobs along the West Coast. No longer housed inside of four solid walls, with little steady income, Fern is making due where her old life left off — sort of. Then, while working a seasonal gig at Amazon, Fern meets an older woman, Linda May, who befriends Fern almost against her will. “I like work.”What happens when the house in which you’ve lived is taken away, when the Social Security you’ve paid into for 50 years isn’t enough to retire on? It’s clear Fern, like many of the people she meets on the road, has lived through painful things — as have we all.

The pandemic has pushed millions of Americans to the cliff’s edge, with the ground crumbling at year’s end without further stimulus action by Congress. When federal emergency coronavirus relief protections expire, some as soon as the day after Christmas, 13 million Americans will lose their jobless benefits. “It’s another fiscal cliff when families have already gone over a fiscal cliff,” Diane Swonk, chief economist at Grant Thornton, told NBC News. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Friday that there is "momentum" on Capitol Hill to reach a deal on coronavirus relief, further optimism that legislation could be approved before the end of the year. Laid off in March, her unemployment benefits — which expire on Dec. 26 — barely cover her rent.

“I’m so happy it got back in the film.”Critics skewered “But I’m a Cheerleader” when it premiered two decades ago. “But I’m a Cheerleader” is really making fun of the binary as much as anything else. * Households and businesses that are in trouble need grants, which the Fed can’t provide, not lower borrowing costs, which is what the Fed already has delivered. * And to top it off, Fed policymakers say, the rapid spread of the virus means now is not the time to ramp up stimulus. “I am not opposed to more accommodation,” Chicago Federal Reserve Bank President Charles Evans told reporters on Friday. This week, as fiscal talks rekindled, some analysts speculated that a sharp rise in bond yields could nudge the Fed into action. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Drug industry trade groups filed two lawsuits against the Trump administration on Friday challenging new U.S. rules to lower drug prices, potentially undermining one of President Donald Trump’s flagship efforts to take on high drug costs. Breakingviews - Fund firm merger-SPAC deal has hairy outline

REUTERS/Lucas JacksonNEW YORK (Reuters Breakingviews) - Sometimes a transaction looks so hairy that it’s hard to tell if there’s a sensible idea at its core. Dyal Capital Partners and Owl Rock Capital Partners are considering merging and going public through a third entity, a blank-check vehicle called Altimar Acquisition, the firms said on Wednesday. Owl Rock has direct-lending assets under management of $24 billion. Altimar, the special-purpose acquisition company that may buy into the Dyal-Owl Rock combo, is sponsored by another investment firm, HPS Investment Partners. For Dyal and Owl Rock, insider relationships and the overlay of a SPAC – 2020’s hottest financial product – could make the merger potential harder to see.

Lawmakers enacted $3 trillion in aid earlier this year but have not been able to agree on fresh relief since the spring. “The situation requires urgent action,” President-elect Joe Biden in a statement that called on the Trump administration and Congress to reach agreement on coronavirus relief. But it is unclear whether McConnell would agree to such a large package after pushing to keep COVID-19 relief spending near the $500 billion mark. White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow, speaking to reporters at the White House on Friday, declined to comment on whether the $908 billion bipartisan proposal was too expansive. He said Trump wanted to see a “targeted” coronavirus relief bill.

Split Senate Means Narrow Path for Biden’s Nominees

WASHINGTON—President-elect Joe Biden’s cabinet picks will face a narrow path in the Senate next year, with the confirmation process providing an early test of the new administration’s ability to work with Republicans amid heightened partisan rancor over nominees. Republicans are set to hold at least 50 seats, compared with 48 for Democrats, with two seats from Georgia up for grabs in runoff elections scheduled for Jan. 5. In a 50-50 Senate, Democrats would hold the majority, as incoming Vice President Kamala Harris would break any ties. If Democrats fall short, Republicans would be in charge, the first time in decades that a new president has a Senate controlled by the opposite party. “There are some that are clearly coming with baggage that may make it very difficult for the Senate to approve them,” said Sen. Mike Rounds (R., S.D.)

North Korean propaganda has long struck a familiar chord, spewing vitriol toward imperialist outsiders and fawning over the ruling Kim family’s achievements. But Pyongyang’s image makers are now peddling a softer image of the Kim regime, which is best known for being nuclear-armed, reclusive and impoverished. “It’s finally kimchi season,” the account bearing Mr. Kim’s name tweeted on Nov. 11. “Just thinking about our healthy and tasty kimchi makes my mouth water.”Days before North Korea’s Mother’s Day on Nov. 16, a tweet on the account read, “Mother, much love and respect to you.”

LONDON (Reuters) - British food banks are seeing more families needing their support as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic forces struggling people to seek help, charities and volunteers say. The rise in those out of work has resulted in more people turning to food banks, which provide emergency food supplies to families in need. The Trussell Trust, which runs more than 1,300 food bank centres across Britain, says it provided 1.2 million food parcels between April and September, with a huge rise in people needing its support for the first time. It forecasts there will be a 61% increase in food parcels required across its network from October to December, the equivalent of six parcels given out every minute. “The ideal would be for the government obviously to up everybody’s payment that they get every week to a reasonable amount where they don’t have to then seek help from food banks,” said Sahar Beg, chief executive of the Tooting Community Kitchen.

Shaming others might make you feel good about yourself, but it rarely corrects bad behavior. But the evidence suggests it’s much more productive to talk about safe sex and to help them deal with any adverse consequences of having sex. Likewise, we can lecture people about eating more healthfully and stigmatize those who don’t, but it rarely results in behavioral change. We can demand that people stop socializing and cancel their holidays entirely, but as we saw over Thanksgiving, that doesn’t work. I can remember reading numerous articles early in the pandemic about how to make sure delivery food was virus-free.
