CNN —Four instructors from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, were injured in a “serious incident” while visiting a park in China on Monday, according to a statement from the school. The instructors were in China teaching as part of a partnership with a local university and had been accompanied to the public park by a faculty member of that partner institution, Cornell College President Jonathan Brand said in a statement to the college community. Brand did not name the partner institution in his statement, but school spokesperson Jen Visser confirmed the incident happened in Jilin City. Ashley Hinson, who represents the district where the college is located, said in a post on X that the four college employees “were brutally stabbed.”“My team has been in communication with Cornell College and will do everything in our power to bring these Iowans home safely,” Hinson said.

Kim Reynolds signed a bill into law on Wednesday that will make it a state crime for a person to enter Iowa after having been deported or denied entry into the United States. The new law, which is set to take effect July 1 but could face court challenges, joins Iowa with Texas in seeking to enforce immigration limits outside the federal system. Ms. Reynolds, who had said she would sign the legislation, accused federal officials of failing to secure the U.S.-Mexico border and putting Americans at risk. “The Biden administration has failed to enforce our nation’s immigration laws, putting the protection and safety of Iowans at risk,” Ms. Reynolds, a Republican, said in a statement. This bill gives Iowa law enforcement the power to do what he is unwilling to do: enforce immigration laws already on the books.”A White House spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.

As they discussed the measure, LGBTQ+ advocates outside the room cried out: “Trans rights are human rights.” Two of the subcommittee members are Republican and one is a Democrat. Iowa’s civil rights law protects against discrimination in employment, wages, public accommodations, housing, education and credit practices based upon certain characteristics of a person. That includes gender identity, as well as someone’s race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, religion, national origin and disability status. Sexual orientation and gender identity were not originally included in Iowa’s Civil Rights Act of 1965. About half of U.S. states include gender identity in their civil rights code to protect against discrimination in housing and public places, such as stores or restaurants, according to the Movement Advancement Project, an LGBTQ+ rights think tank.

A caucus worker checks in voters at a caucus site at the Horizon Events Center in Clive, Iowa, on Jan. 15, 2024. Former President Donald Trump won the Iowa caucus by a landslide, due in part to strong turnout by older voters. "While the turnout overall was low, 70% of caucusgoers who turned out were over the age of 50, which is unprecedented," said Brad Anderson, Iowa state director at the AARP. Historically, the turnout at Iowa caucuses tends to hover around 60% and traditionally skews older, he said. "Given the weather, I think people are genuinely surprised at how robust the older caucusgoer turnout was," Anderson said.

Ron DeSantis ended his presidential campaign on Sunday, succumbing to the final realization of defeat in a candidacy that once held such promise. And yes, it was then-President Donald Trump whose endorsement powered DeSantis to that very general election in the first place. After pundits point out this a bold strategy for a historic swing state, DeSantis pulls off a historic reelection rout. Just like DeSantis, Walker ended up being doomed by the sheer rate at which his campaign burned through contributions. But in this reality, a week ago DeSantis lashed out at "worthless" Republicans who back Trump.

Guaranteed basic income programs typically offer no-strings-attached cash to certain groups, like the poor or new mothers. Universal basic income, its like-minded cousin, offers cash to entire populations regardless of income. Numerous counties and cities, many of them in red states, across the United States have been experimenting with guaranteed basic income plans. Ron DeSantis of Florida may have done just enough in the Iowa caucuses on Monday night to argue that he still belongs in the race to defeat Donald J. Trump for the Republican presidential nomination. But his distant second-place finish had all the feelings of a disaster, given how much time and money he invested in the state, and it calls into question his ability to stay in the nominating contest, with his campaign cash running low and tough tests ahead in New Hampshire and South Carolina. Mr. DeSantis, who entered the field as one of its most compelling contenders, just barely managed to hold off a late surge from Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor. Mr. Trump defeated both candidates so soundly on Monday night that the race was called in his favor by The Associated Press just 31 minutes after the caucuses got underway. The early call — while some Iowans were still caucusing — gave Mr. DeSantis’s team a lifeline to blame the news media for a disappointing performance.

At first blush, it seemed to many to be the key to picking former President Donald Trump's lock on the Hawkeye State's Republican base. The alternative vote split roughly in two, leaving Republican Iowa firmly in Trump's hands as the first ballots of the 2024 presidential contest were cast. Trump does not thrive among suburban voters, a group that cost Trump nationally in 2020 and where Haley showed promise Monday. Haley, by contrast, beat Trump in Johnson County, Iowa, a burgeoning tract of homes and businesses along Interstate 80 south of Cedar Rapids. A week earlier, Trump volunteer Jackie Garlock looked around a similar hall in Mason City in northern Iowa on a snowy Saturday, convinced Trump would win.

Two-thirds of Republican voters don’t think President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory was legitimate, despite all evidence to the contrary. Iowa caucusgoers, unlike most of the country, overwhelmingly support banning most or all abortions nationwide. Iowa voters could be asked on the general election ballot to make clear there is no right to abortion guaranteed in their state’s constitution. While Trump held a commanding lead among Iowa caucusgoers without college degrees, college graduates were more closely divided among Trump, former South Carolina Gov. But she made clear this week that she would ultimately support Trump if he’s the nominee.

Former President Donald Trump is projected to have won the Iowa caucuses, kicking off his quest to return to the White House with a resounding victory in the first state to vote in 2024. Based on early results and with many precincts still tabulating results, multiple news networks projected that Trump was projected to win the Iowa Republican caucuses. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz sprang from low digits early in Iowa to narrowly win the caucuses on the back of an impressive organization. Trump blew out the field in New Hampshire, reasserting his frontrunner status and eventually closing Cruz out. Traditionally, Iowa caucuses are squeakers, so close that Democrats failed to produce definitive results in the chaotic 2020 contest. Ms. Haley had 20 percent and Mr. DeSantis 16 percent — a separation at the edge of the survey’s margin of error. Ms. Haley, in the Times/Siena poll, had the support of just 3 percent of those voters.
