Is a Four-Day Week the Future of Work?

Kickstarter Chief Executive Aziz Hasan had to embrace remote work during the initial stage of the pandemic. Now this boss wants to reward employees who stuck around with a new perk: the four-day workweek. Mr. Hasan’s bet is that the shortened schedule will allow workers to juggle work and home life while having more time for personal pursuits. “You can’t learn until you start doing it,” Mr. Hasan said. “The experience of the pandemic and working from home has us beginning to question all the face-time requirements of the workplace,” said Ben Hunnicutt, a professor at the University of Iowa and the author of “Work Without End,” a study of past attempts to shorten the work week.

10 Things in Politics: Big Tech boosts vax mandates

But like masks, corporate America could well fill the void by imposing what are essentially mandates on employees across the nation. But the federal government has categorized COVID-19 in a way that gives companies broad discretion to impose masks and/or vaccinate mandates. As lawmakers crack down on Big Tech with greater antitrust scrutiny than ever before, the tech giant said its pandemic-era boom wouldn't be sustainable. Kim Reynolds on Tuesday blamed migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border for some of the nation's Covid-19 spike, saying "none of them are vaccinated and they’re getting dispersed throughout the country." While public health experts have been citing the virus' delta variant and lagging U.S. vaccination efforts for the latest coronavirus surge, Reynolds said partial responsibility rests with newcomers coming across the southern border. "Part of the problem is the southern border is open and we’ve got 88 countries that are coming across the border and they don’t have vaccines," Reynolds told reporters Tuesday. Joe Henry, state political director for the League of United Latin American Citizens of Iowa, called Reynolds’ statement “hate mongering” and said she should concentrate on boosting Iowa vaccinations. Less than half of Iowa residents are fully vaccinated, according to the latest state data.
