MEXICO CITY (AP) — For filmmaker Issa López, the first question was where? “The moment I understood it was the Arctic, everything started falling into place,” the director of “True Detective: Night Country” told reporters in Mexico City ahead of Sunday's premiere on HBO and HBO Max. The Mexican director was looking for a region of the United States that had a totally different physical feel from the previous three “True Detective” installments, which were set in Louisiana, Los Angeles and Arkansas, respectively. Both seek to shed light on the disappearance of eight scientists from an isolated research station, and also face the unsolved murder of an Inuit woman who was an environmental activist and midwife. The series is executive produced by Foster, López, Barry Jenkins, Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey and “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto.

They wanted to investigate the rocks that may contain insights about the contents locked within Earth’s core and mantle, the mostly solid layer of Earth’s interior located beneath its surface. Helium inherited from the solar nebula likely became locked in Earth’s core as the planet formed, making the core a reservoir of noble gases. “So, the helium we measured in these rocks would have escaped the core perhaps 100 million years ago or possibly much earlier.”Helium leaking from Earth’s core doesn’t affect our planet or have any negative implications, he said. If so, have fluxes of these elements from the core over (Earth’s) history influenced planetary evolution? I am excited to investigate links between helium and other light elements,” Horton said.

The Canadian government says it is urgently trying to end the forced sterilization of Indigenous women, describing the practice as a human rights violation and a prosecutable offense. Yet police say they will not pursue a criminal investigation into a recent case in which a doctor apologized for his “unprofessional conduct” in sterilizing an Inuit woman. In July, The Associated Press reported on the case of an Inuit woman in Yellowknife who had surgery in 2019 aimed at relieving her abdominal pain. “This is a pivotal case for Canada because it shows that forced sterilization is still happening,” said Dr. Unjali Malhotra, of the First Nations Health Authority in British Columbia. In 2021, along a two-lane highway in Mandan, N.D., a giant billboard showing masked figures in clothing that was inspired by both Indigenous tradition and science fiction declared: “WE SURVIVE YOU.” Its artist, Cannupa Hanska Luger, is one of 17,000 members enrolled in the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nations today. In 2007, the Anishinaabe artist Rebecca Belmore photographed an Indigenous woman with a “fringe” of blood (represented by red string) trickling from a diagonal scar across her back. “To me it is a wound that is on the mend,” Belmore has said. “She will get up and go on, but she will carry that mark with her.”Over the years, the Kalaaleq artist Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory has performed Greenlandic mask dances, or uaajeerneq, for audiences around the world: “It is a fearsome, sexy clown act,” she’s written, “that was handed down to me from my mother and other Inuit activist artists from Greenland’s movement to self-government in the 1970s.”

A moon dog hung low over the horizon. It showed up on the first day of the Canadian soldiers’ patrol, and the Inuit rangers guiding them in the country’s far north spotted it right away: Ice crystals in the clouds were bending the light, making two illusory moons appear in the sky. The Inuit rangers told the platoon to pitch their tents and hunker down. “If it gets worse, we’re going to be stranded,” said John Ussak, one of the Inuit rangers, recalling how the soldiers wanted to keep going, but backed down. Canada is now on a mission to assert its hold on its Arctic territory, an enormous stretch that was once little more than an afterthought.

The verb “see” is “doe,” uttered with a high pitch. To put the verb into past tense, you say it with a low pitch. To say that rather than mere glimpsing, you looked at something deliberately, you start on that low pitch and go even lower. And if you want to say the opposite, that you just looked something over quickly, you start high and then swoop low. Wait, wait!” This was perfectly ordinary speech, and it entailed four verbs and zero nouns or adjectives.

Judith Miller, the author of popular antiques price guides and a member of the team of appraisers who determined what was trash and what was treasure on “Antiques Roadshow,” the beloved long-running BBC program that inspired the American series of the same name, died on April 8 in North London. Once, Mr. Wainwright recalled, at the reception for his mother’s funeral, a woman approached Ms. Miller and pulled a plate out from under her coat, wondering what it might be worth. Ms. Miller’s books, updated regularly, are encyclopedic in their range and eclectic in their categories. They describe thousands of objects — the current antiques edition lists more than 8,000 — each illustrated by a sumptuous color photograph. There were the usual suspects, like Royal Doulton Art Deco teacups and saucers, Meissen pottery, Murano glass and pages of Scandinavian ceramics.
Vatican repudiates colonial-era 'doctrine of discovery'

VATICAN CITY, March 30 (Reuters) - The Vatican on Thursday formally repudiated the colonial-era "doctrine of discovery", used centuries ago to justify European conquests of Africa and the Americas, saying "it is not part of Catholic Church teaching". The Vatican acknowledged in a statement from its culture and human development departments that papal documents from the 15th century were used by colonial powers to give legitimacy to their actions, which included slavery. The Vatican departments admitted that the bulls, which gave political cover to Spanish and Portuguese conquests in Africa and the Americas, "did not adequately reflect the equal dignity and rights of indigenous peoples". Argentine-born Pope Francis, the first pontiff from the Americas, has made several outreach gestures towards indigenous people. Last year, he travelled to Canada's Arctic region to apologise for the oppression of the Inuit people.
My obsession is summed up pretty well by a tweet from @blagojevism: "George Santos is essentially a 19th-century character. Media depicting these characters found inspiration from real life: in a time before digital records and facial recognition, opportunity was everywhere. George Santos's brand of full-throated scammery is particularly American, something that belongs to this country as much as Abraham Lincoln and apple pie. The phrase "and if you believe that, I've got a bridge to sell you" comes from his legendary real-life method. But Santos, so far, has avoided jail time, giving him at least one leg up over the Yellow Kid.

The Music of Inuit Art

In the Inuit language, tusarnitut means “sounds that please the ear.” It’s a fitting title for a new exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts focused on the power of songs and music in Inuit art. “TUSARNITUT! Music Born of the Cold,” opening on Nov. 10, juxtaposes prints, drawings and installations by modern and contemporary artists with musical instruments and field recordings. Today, more than 180,000 Inuit live in a band of northern territory stretching from Eastern Siberia through Alaska, Canada and Greenland. In the traditionally male art of drum dancing, performers use drums of seal or caribou skin to celebrate important events like births, marriages or successful hunts, as well as to honor the dead.
