Port-au-Prince, Haiti CNN —Security forces protecting Haiti’s leader provided covering fire as he left a hospital in Port-au-Prince after an interview with CNN, in a stark illustration of the violence that continues to plague the gang-ravaged nation. Conille initially proceeded with the interview and did not remark on the gunfire — which is not an unusual thing to hear in Port-au-Prince. No one was injured and the prime minister was safely returned to his office. In May, Conille was appointed prime minister during the government’s transition period, with the aim to eventually lead Haiti to new elections. Conille had previously briefly served as prime minister from 2011 to 2012 during the presidency of Michel Martelly.

He replaces Michel Patrick Boisvert, who was named interim prime minister after Ariel Henry resigned via letter in late April. He worked for several years at the United Nations before Martelly designated him as prime minister in 2011. It also accused the council of not being transparent while choosing a new prime minister, saying it did not publicly share the criteria used or the names submitted, among other things. In addition to picking a new prime minister, the council also is responsible for selecting a new Cabinet and holding general elections by the end of next year.

CNN —A transitional council responsible for choosing Haiti’s next leadership has named one of its members as council president and proposed a new interim prime minister amid efforts to control the gang violence in the Caribbean nation. The council, which is responsible for paving the way for elections and addressing the country’s deteriorating security situation, on Tuesday named Edgard Leblanc Fils as its president and proposed former sports minister Fritz Bélizaire as new interim prime minister. It is tasked with the responsibility of naming a new prime minister and cabinet. The country’s former prime minister, Ariel Henry, resigned last week as the council was sworn in and the former finance minister, Michael Patrick Boisvert, has been filling the role on a temporary basis. One of the gangs’ leaders, Vitel’homme Innocent, told CNN recently that if the gangs do not get a seat, they would try other means.

The Caribbean nation’s finance minister Michael Patrick Boisvert has been appointed as interim prime minister until a new government is formed, according to an X post from Henry’s office on Thursday. It is unclear how long it could take to establish a transitional council to begin the transfer of power, though Haiti’s former PM Claude Joseph told CNN that it could be created within 24 hours. The big question is whether these changes can bring calm to Haiti, and put a stop to the terrible violence tearing apart Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince. Talks with regional leaders continued, leading into the emergency CARICOM meeting on Monday. The United States will contribute $300 million to the Kenyan-led multinational security mission, Blinken said after attending the CARICOM meeting on Monday.

CNN —The wife of Haiti’s former President Jovenel Moïse, Martine Moïse, and the former prime minister Claude Joseph are among 51 people who have been indicted over the assassination of the former president, according to a 122-page document from the judge presiding over the investigation. Mrs. Moïse was also shot multiple times but survived. The judge called for the arrest and trials of those charged. Haiti's former prime minister Claude Joseph in Port-au-Prince in July 2021. The prime minister has no direct relationship with the examining magistrate, nor does he control him.

The violence comes ahead of a court decision expected on Jan. 26 on a Kenyan-led multinational force to address gang violence in the country, one of the poorest in the Western Hemisphere. UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Pakistan’s interim prime minister said he expects parliamentary elections to take place in the new year, dismissing the possibility that the country’s powerful military would manipulate the results to ensure that jailed former premier Imran Khan’s party doesn’t win.
