New York Mayor Eric Adams is expected to face federal charges by prosecutors out of the Southern District of New York as soon as Thursday, two sources familiar with the matter said Wednesday night. Before news of federal charges broke Wednesday, Adams was at a reception at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which President Joe Biden also attended. “I do not see how Mayor Adams can continue governing New York City,” Ocasio-Cortez said on X. "However, it is clear that defending himself against serious federal charges will require a significant amount of the time and attention needed to govern this great city. The most appropriate path forward is for him to step down so that New York City can get the full focus its leadership demands."

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Ben Cardin was targeted by a caller who posed as a former top Ukrainian official during a recent Zoom call, according to a notice circulated to Senate offices and obtained by NBC News on Wednesday. According to the notice, the caller's questioning was "likely trying to bate the Senator into commenting on a political candidate." Cardin and his staff ended the call, the notice said, adding that Cardin's office contacted the State Department, which confirmed the caller was not Kuleba. Cardin referred to the caller as a "malign actor" in a statement about the incident his office released Wednesday night. Florida ranks sixth among states with the largest shares of homeowners who don't have meaningful insurance. Putnam County, in the northern part of the state, is at 32.9%, while in Miami-Dade County, nearly 25% lack homeowners insurance that would protect them from calamity. In Miami-Dade County, 33.5% of homeowners pay $4,000-plus a year, ranking it in the top 10 among the country's most populous counties. Curtis, who has lived in Taylor County for 40 years and is a former forester, said many of her neighbors can't afford to pay for insurance. Her insurance doesn't cover hurricane damage, so McDonald will anxiously await news from home until the storm passes, she said.

U.S. District Judge Edward Chen in San Francisco on Tuesday sided with several advocacy groups, finding the current practice of adding fluoride to drinking water supplies to fight cavities presented unreasonable risks for children’s developing brains. But the judge stressed he was not concluding with certainty that fluoridated water endangered public health. The agency had denied their so-called citizen’s petition asking it to consider banning fluoridation chemicals from public drinking water. More than 200 million Americans, or about 75% of the population, currently have fluoride added to their drinking water at recommended levels of 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water. The U.S. practice differs from Europe, where fluoridated drinking water is rare.

He recalled how during the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, there was a sense of hope because several countries were actively mediating. It was formed in 1982, after Israel invaded Lebanon, with the initial aim of ending Israel’s occupation of southern Lebanon, which it achieved in 2000. Hezbollah has fired rockets, missiles, and drones into northern Israel; and Israel has responded with increasingly heavy airstrikes. Israel has vowed to do whatever it takes to safely return its citizens to their homes in the north. Hezbollah has also said that it does not seek war but that it will continue striking Israel until there is a cease-fire in Gaza.

Australia's inflation rate has come within the RBA's target range in the month of August, easing from 3.5% in July to 2.7%., according to a Wednesday release from the country's Bureau of Statistics. The drop puts the rate below the Reserve Bank of Australia's target range of 2%-3% for the first time since August 2021. He said that while the relief programs will bring headline inflation to the top of the RBA's target range, the RBA will be "looking through" these subsidies and focusing on core inflation. He writes, "the path of core inflation back to the target range has stalled somewhat, and it is hard to see a major improvement in the near term. We think the bank will need to see three more inflation prints before they are comfortable embarking on an easing cycle."

Incoming President Subianto has promised to continue the charge toward making Indonesia a high-income economy. Economic reforms passed through by the outgoing president will make the achieving Indonesia's grand vision easier. "Widodo put in place a bunch of economic reforms, the most noticeable being making it easier to hire and fire new workers. Indrawati hopes to avoid "the middle-income trap" — an economic development situation where growing economies stagnate at middle-income levels and are unable to advance to the ranks of high-income countries. Major policy reforms, she believes, will help Indonesia sidestep that.

India's economic growth story is a stunning one — but the question of where investors should park their money is not always straightforward, with one Blackstone executive highlighting a common mistake. However, focusing too much on the macro story can be dangerous for investors, according to Blackstone Private Equity's head of Asia, Amit Dixit. I think you go to India for the macro, everybody knows," Dixit said at the Milken Institute's recent Asia Summit in Singapore. While the list of companies Blackstone invests in India are extensive, he spotlighted the likes of information technology service firm Mphasis , IT service management company R Systems and automotive components manufacturer Sona Comstar . "I think, either end of the spectrum, you can make a lot of money as an investor," he said.
