“The videos (of the attack) speak for themselves don’t they?” Webb told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Steven Saphore/AAP/ReutersCauchi’s father Andrew Cauchi — who appeared devastated — believes his “monster” son may have deliberately set out to kill women, he told Australian media. He enacted strict gun control laws and initated a massive buyback scheme. “The evidence consistently shows that the underlying causes of violence directed toward women are rigid gender stereotypes, sexism and disrespect. Joel Cauchi had a fixation with blades and kept a collection of them, his father told the newspaper The Australian.

March 12 marks Equal Pay Day this year
  + stars: | 2024-03-12 | by ( Jeanne Sahadi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
New York CNN —March 12 marks Equal Pay Day in the United States, a symbolic date representing the number of days women have to work into the current year just to make the same amount of money men made in the prior one. In dollars and cents, for every dollar a man earns, a woman is paid 84 cents, according to the National Committee on Pay Equity and the Equal Pay Today campaign. If part-time workers and those not employed year-round are included, the gender pay gap is worse, at 78 cents on the dollar, said Deborah Vagins, national campaign director of Equal Rights Advocates and director of Equal Pay Today. The gender pay gap is typically widest when comparing the earnings of White men to Black, Hispanic or Native American women. Equal pay for equal work has been the law of the land for more than a half-century, yet women still cannot get fair treatment when it comes to employment and earnings.

Two days earlier, the body of 38-year-old Krystal Marshall was recovered from the charred remains of her home after a house fire in South Australia, according to SA Police. The number of women killed by violence in Australia has ranged between 43 and 84 each years since Counting Dead Women began tallying deaths in 2012. Since then, she said she’s noticed a change in the way people, including the police, respond to domestic violence. But until those lessons are learned, state authorities are strengthening their responses to domestic violence. Whitford says it takes the community to come together to prevent more women becoming victims of domestic violence.

The Menopause Canon
  + stars: | 2023-07-18 | by ( Hope Reese | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Each day, around 6,000 women in the United States enter menopause, which officially starts 12 months after a woman’s last period. But perimenopause, the time leading up to menopause, can last anywhere from two to 14 years (the average is around four). “Many women enter into this transition without any information about what may occur,” said Rebecca C. Thurston, a professor of psychiatry and epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh. Books can help demystify the experience of perimenopause and menopause, but many titles are rampant with misinformation. To help you sort through the options, The New York Times asked nine experts — gynecologists, endocrinologists, researchers and podcasters — to recommend their favorites.

Today is Equal Pay Day. Here’s what that means
  + stars: | 2023-03-14 | by ( Jeanne Sahadi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
This year, Equal Pay Day falls on March 14. And Equal Pay Day, inaugurated in 1996 by the National Committee on Pay Equity, now arrives about a month earlier than it used to. Back in 2005, for instance, Equal Pay Day was April 19. The bad news is that Equal Pay Day is even still a thing in 2023, since pay equity remains a long way off. Equal Pay Day varies widely for different groupsThe actual marking of Equal Pay Day in March for women overall is largely symbolic, in part because the date varies widely by race and ethnicity, occupation, geography, age and other issues.
