That's because the industries that led job growth in April are traditionally low-paying. Indeed, job growth is concentrated in industries that are historically low-paying — and continue to pay less than the average across private industries. As Pollak notes, "wage growth has come down sharply, but it's mostly come down in industries where it was very rapid before."

At the midterm elections, abortion was a key concern for voters after the bombshell Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade this summer. The over $900,000 in loses over a 40-year career for Black women from the pay gap can negatively impact Black women financially. Mason said the money lost due to the pay gap affects "their ability to build wealth."
