Political organizations supporting Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are touting both campaigns' messages of “freedom” as they woo Latinas, a key voting bloc. Against Hillary Clinton in 2016, Trump won just 28% of Hispanic women voters compared to Clinton’s 67%, according to Pew. Also, at least 13 states saw increases in Latina voter registrations when Biden left the race and endorsed Harris, according to TargetSmart CEO Tom Bonier. Republican Mercedes Schlapp, one of the “Latinas for Freedom” organizers, said the issue of abortion is one for states to decide. The group is defining freedom for Latinas as freedom from economic policies they say are "socialist."

CNN —The genesis of photographer Joy Gregory’s latest project, “Shining Lights,” began 40 years ago, at a Valentine’s Day party in London. After the party and as they became friends, Mercer suggested the pair collaborate on a book about women’s photography. Courtesy the artist/MACKThe idea then, for a book surveying the work of Black women’s photography in Britain in the 1980s and 1990s, lay dormant for several decades. The result is “Shining Lights: Black Women Photographers in 1980s–90s Britain,” a new photography book edited by Gregory and co-published by Autograph and Mack. “I think as women, it wasn’t open, and I think being of color, it definitely wasn’t open.”In the book, Black “refers to the whole gamut of color, which was really about difference,” says Gregory.

We’re doing everything we can, and we’ve figured out how to do plenty of things that seemed impossible, too. Camille Joseph VarlackIngrid P. Lewis-MartinSheena WrightNew YorkThe writers are, respectively, chief of staff to Mayor Eric Adams, chief adviser and first deputy mayor. To the Editor:Kudos to Mara Gay. Indeed, this city should be welcoming immigrants and asylum seekers with every resource we have. Not only is it the right thing to do, but history and current economists tell us it will profit the city immensely.

In the days after Eric Adams was elected mayor of New York, several of his supporters approached him with some uncomfortable advice. They urged him not to hire his closest ally, Ingrid P. Lewis-Martin, for his administration, according to six people with knowledge of the conversations. It was an audacious suggestion. But the group of supporters argued that Ms. Lewis-Martin could cause trouble at City Hall, according to the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations. They noted that when Mr. Adams was Brooklyn borough president and Ms. Lewis-Martin was his deputy, she had alienated staff members and pushed the limits of ethics rules.
