CHENNAI (Reuters) - Hundreds of people in low lying areas in India’s southern city of Chennai were evacuated and more than 150 relief centres were on standby ahead of a “very severe cyclonic storm”, government officials said on Wednesday. Vessels in the city’s port have been moved to sea and port operations will likely remain shut until the cyclone makes landfall, a senior port official said. Local government officials in Chennai released water from a major reservoir, cleared fallen trees and readied relief centres as they evacuated people from low lying areas. “Residents are shifted from low lying areas close to Adyar river. Authorities have so far evacuated 528 people and 150 more relief shelters are being readied in the city, officials said.

India bans 43 more mobile apps as it takes on China
  + stars: | 2020-11-25 | by ( Reuters Staff | ) sentiment -1.00   time to read: +2 min
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India banned 43 mobile apps on Tuesday, including Alibaba Group Holding Ltd’s e-commerce app Aliexpress, in a new wave of web sanctions targeted at China after the neighbours’ months-long standoff on their rugged Himalayan border. The 43 mostly Chinese-origin applications, which also include a few dating apps, threaten the “sovereignty and integrity of India”, the technology ministry said in a statement. India has previously banned more than 170 apps, saying they collect and share users’ data and could pose a threat to the state. Its subsidiary UC Web laid off staff in India earlier this year after New Delhi first banned 59 Chinese-origin mobile apps that included UC Web’s browser and two other products. India’s slew of app bans has also jolted the ambitions of Chinese tech titans such as Bytedance and Tencent in the South Asian country, which is trying to reduce Beijing’s influence on its burgeoning internet economy.

REUTERS/Francis Mascarenhas - RC1A39ADCF00MUMBAI (Reuters Breakingviews) - India’s stressed asset deals are starting to look cosy. The higher offer from Adani Enterprises might be welcomed by creditors led by State Bank of India. It is something of a test case because India does not have a dedicated framework to deal with failed lenders. Underwhelmed by the bids from four short-listed suitors in the first round, creditors asked for revisions. With controversies like these, India is only adding distress to debt deals.

REUTERS/Thomas Peter/File PhotoSAO PAULO (Reuters) - Brazil has gathered enough infection data from a late-stage trial of an experimental COVID-19 vaccine developed by China’s Sinovac Biotech and expects to have interim results on its efficiency in early December, trial organizers said on Monday. He said an independent committee is likely to release the efficiency results in the first week of December based on its analysis of the data. Covas said Brazil’s health ministry now has all the information needed to include Coronavac in the national program, while São Paulo Health Secretary Jean Gorinchteyn expected on Monday Brazil’s regulator to approve the use of the Sinovac vaccine, CoronaVac, by January. The party has won over a wide swath of Hindu voters with its nationalist pitch, but it has also divided the country and presided over an increase in religious tensions and sometimes violence, particularly against Muslims. Thomas Cherian, a spokesman for Netflix, said the company had no comment on the police complaint. Netflix, which launched in India only in 2016, has a small but growing audience in the country. “A Suitable Boy” is based on a 1993 novel by Vikram Seth and revolves around a young Hindu woman struggling with her mother’s edict that she must soon be wed. The series was directed by Mira Nair, who was born in India and has had a long career as a filmmaker in India and Hollywood, directing movies including “Monsoon Wedding,” “Mississippi Masala” and “Vanity Fair.”

Brazil signs letter of intent to purchase five COVID vaccines

REUTERS/Diego Vara/File PhotoBRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazil’s health ministry said on Sunday it will sign non-binding letters of intent to purchase coronavirus vaccines from four companies and Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, adding that any purchase will depend on the approval of the nation’s regulators. According to the ministry, officials met last week with representatives of Pfizer Inc, India’s Bharat Biotech, the Russian Direct Investment Fund, Moderna Inc and Janssen, a unit of Johnson & Johnson. So far, the Brazilian federal government’s main bet is on a vaccine being developed by AstraZeneca PLC, with which it has already signed a supply contract. In Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest state, local authorities have signed a deal with China’s Sinovac Biotech Ltd to test and produce a vaccine locally. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, a long-time critic of China, has dismissed that vaccine as untrustworthy, without presenting evidence.

Tibetan political leader visits White House for first time in six decades

REUTERS/Thomas PeterSHANGHAI (Reuters) - The head of the Tibetan government in exile has visited the U.S. White House for the first time in six decades, a move that could further infuriate Beijing, which has accused the United States of trying to destabilise the region. Lobsan Sangay, President of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), was invited to the White House to meet the newly appointed U.S. Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues, Robert Destro, on Friday, the CTA said in a press release. Tibet has become one of the areas of dispute between the United States and China, with relations between the world’s two biggest economies at their lowest point in decades. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused Beijing in July of violating Tibetan human rights and said Washington supported “meaningful autonomy” for the region. Beijing officials have since accused the United States of using Tibet to try to promote “splittism” in China.

India’s Aircraft Carrier Battle Group: The uniqueness of this exercise is the fielding of an Aircraft carrier-based Battle Group from the Indian side. India’s sole carrier INS Vikramaditya is the Flagship along with indigenous destroyers IN Ships Kolkata and Chennai, stealth frigate Talwar, Fleet tanker ship Deepak along with their integral helicopters. The indigenous submarine INS Khanderi is the underwater contingent during the exercise and P8I ASW maritime reconnaissance aircraft as Fleet ASW submarine hunter and ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) aircraft. This carrier-based Task Force fielded by the Indian Navy is definitely a potent sea supremacy force to reckon with, and its joint operations with QUAD naval force is expected to emanate some very interesting statistics for the Indian Navy to sharpen its Warfare tactics. With only one operational Aircraft Carrier in the fleet presently, Vikramaditya shall gain a lot from this opportunity to conduct joint fighter jet exercises with another Carrier Group (from the US Fifth fleet).

Kamala Harris’s Style Mixes Courtroom...and Converse

Senator Kamala Harris, a lawyer who has often spoken of her desire to “prosecute the case” on the campaign trail, has rarely diverged from that strategy during her runs for president and vice president. While most female politicians such as Hillary Clinton and Nikki Haley favor TV-friendly rainbow hues, Sen. Harris adheres to a serious signature style honed during her years as a prosecutor. ”Sen. Harris has consistently used the sober codes of attorney style during her political career (with some notable, strategic exceptions—a sequined jacket, her Converse low-tops). ”Granted, the type of impeccably fitted tailoring that Senator Harris favors does not come cheap. Dario Pignatelli | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesSINGAPORE — Gold demand in India fell 30% in the previous quarter, but a sense of "cautious optimism" has returned to the market, according to the World Gold Council. The precious metal plays an important role in India's culture — it's considered auspicious to buy gold during festive occasions or to give gold jewelry as a gift at weddings. Global trendsThe World Gold Council's gold demand trends report said global demand for gold declined 19% year-on-year to 892 tonnes for the July-September quarter — it was the lowest quarterly total since the third quarter of 2009. Though overall demand for gold fell, the three months saw a significant uptick in investment demand which rose 21% year-on-year as investors bought gold bars, coins and gold-backed ETFs. Jewelry demand fell 29% compared to a year ago.

ruthlessness may backfire and drive Muslims into radicalism. The results may be social strife, radicalism, decline of economic progress, and the ruination of India’s image abroad. The country is already being criticized by human rights organizations for violating human rights in Kashmir, and more recently for forcing Amnesty International’s office in India to close. In Pakistan’s case, this means the hegemony of Sunni Muslims at the expense of minorities such as Shiite Muslims, Ahmadis or Christians. And in the parlance of Islamist movements everywhere, “liberalism” and “secular state” are only dirty words, if not heresies.
