On Tuesday, the company said it would invest $300 million to form a joint venture with $19 billion Adani Green Energy (ADNA.NS) to build solar and wind farms in the country. The latest tie-up ought to help Total to hit its target of having 100 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030. Adani Green Energy and Adani Total Gas (ADAG.NS), in which Total owned stakes of about 20% and 37% at the end of June, have lost about 50% and 80% of their market value since January, and are among the worst performing of the group’s nine core listed entities. Total’s green capacity targets may be more pressing than the risk of further Adani problems. Adani Green will contribute assets to the joint venture, it said in a statement, adding that the deal will help it achieve its target of having 45 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

The group's seven listed stocks have together lost over $120 billion in market value since Jan. 24. The profit came on the back of boosts from its key coal trading division and its new energy businesses. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) for its mainstay coal trading business saw a whopping four-fold surge, while that of the Adani New Energy segment more than doubled. The coal trading division benefited from a rise in volumes as well as higher coal prices, while Adani New Energy segment saw a surge in the volumes and prices of solar modules, the company said. Global coal prices remained at elevated levels for most of 2022 as European buyers were willing to pay a premium and make up for the absence of cargo from Russia, their main supplier of LNG and coal.
Chairperson of Indian conglomerate Adani Group, Gautam Adani, speaks at the World Congress of Accountants in Mumbai on November 19, 2022. Shares of India's Adani Enterprises have plummeted over the past week, after the publication of an extensive critical report from U.S. short-seller Hindenburg Research. The ports-to-energy conglomerate, led by one of the world's richest men, Gautam Adani, has vehemently denied wrongdoing. The Adani Group firmly denies the accusations, calling them "nothing but a lie" from the "Madoffs of Manhattan" in a 413-page riposte that failed to soothe skittish investor sentiment and rein in a rapid sell-off. Adani owns 64% of Adani Enterprises — the Adani SB Family holds 55.27%, while 8.73% is with Adani Tradeline Pvt Ltd, where Gautam and brother Rajesh Adani are controlling directors.

Here is what billionaire chairman Gautam Adani said:"The Board takes this opportunity to thank all the investors for your support and commitment to our FPO. The subscription for the FPO closed successfully yesterday. "However, today the market has been unprecedented, and our stock price has fluctuated over the course of the day. Given these extraordinary circumstances, the Company’s board felt that going ahead with the issue will not be morally correct." "We will continue to focus on long term value creation and growth will be managed by internal accruals.
Adani Enterprises, the flagship firm, was trading 4% higher at 3,000 rupees, still below the lower end of the share sale's price band of 3,112 rupees. But other group stocks, including Adani Power (ADAN.NS), Adani Green (ADNA.NS) and Adani Total Gas (ADAG.NS), were down 5%-10%, extending their falls after Adani's 413-page response to Hindenburg's allegations failed to boost investor confidence. An unsuccessful share sale would be a stunning setback for Adani whose group has in recent days repeatedly said investors were standing by its side and the share offering will go through. The share sale needs at least 90% subscription to go through. Hindenburg said in its report it has shorted U.S.-bonds and non-India traded derivatives of the Adani Group.
A successful completion of the share sale will show investors still believe in the group's prospects and that it can weather the unprecedented short-seller challenge and its aftermath. Adani Enterprises stock opened at 2,932 rupees, still below the lower end of the share sale's price band of 3,112 rupees. The share sale needs at least 90% subscription to go through. Some other group stocks, including Adani Power (ADAN.NS), Adani Green (ADNA.NS) and Adani Total Gas (ADAG.NS), were down 5%-10%. Adani Wilmar (ADAW.NS) was down 5%, but Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSE.NS) rose 0.5% at open.
NEW DELHI, Jan 30 (Reuters) - Shares in India's Adani Enterprises (ADEL.NS) rose as much as 9.5% on Monday but those of several other group companies plunged for the third straight day, extending their losses after a U.S. short-seller's report that criticised the group. The report led to a $48 billion wipe-out in seven listed companies of the Adani group last week. On Monday, Adani Enterprises was trading at 2,962 rupees in early trade, paring some of its initial gains, as its critical $2.5 billion secondary share sale entered its second day. That's below the price band for the share sale - Adani has set a floor price of 3,112 rupees per share and a cap of 3,276 rupees. Adani Transmission (ADAI.NS), Adani Total Gas (ADAG.NS) and Adani Green Energy (ADNA.NS) all fell more than 15% each.

A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Tom WestbrookMarkets are holding their breath for a week where central banks may start to take divergent paths. read moreWall Street's "fear index" - the VIX volatility index - on Friday fell below 18.0 for the first time in over a year, and perhaps a little under the radar, U.S. bond market volatility is now its lowest since last June. In Asia, markets slipped slightly, U.S. futures fell 0.4% and currency trade was eerily calm. The Nikkei newspaper reported Renault (RENA.PA) was to lower its share holding in Nissan (7201.T) to 15%, while the latter would invest in Renault's EV business. Things have not gone well for investors in other firms Hindenburg has targeted.
Asked for comment, an Adani Group spokesperson said in an email that the share sale was going "as per schedule", without elaborating. The Adani Group has called the report baseless and said it was considering taking action against Hindenburg. Friday's 20% fall in shares of group flagship Adani Enterprises dragged it 11% below the minimum offer price of the secondary sale. Adani had set a floor price of 3,112 rupees ($38.22) a share and a cap of 3,276 rupees, but Adani Enterprises closed on Friday 2,761.45 rupees. A fourth source said Adani management is also discussing the share sale internally to decide on next steps.
[1/2] The logo of the Adani Group is seen on the facade of its Corporate House on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, India, January 27, 2023. Adani Group in a statement said: "There is no change in either the schedule or the issue price." The Adani Group has called the report baseless and said it was considering taking action against Hindenburg. Friday's 20% fall in shares of group flagship Adani Enterprises dragged it 11% below the minimum offer price of the secondary sale. The Hindenburg report questioned how the Adani Group used entities in offshore tax havens such as Mauritius and the Caribbean islands.
The stunning market selloff has cast a shadow over Adani Enterprises' secondary share sale that started on Friday. The share sale is being managed by Jefferies, India's SBI Capital Markets, Axis Capital, and ICICI Securities among others. Shares of other listed Adani firms also plummeted, with Adani Transmission Ltd (ADAI.NS), Adani Total Gas (ADAG.NS), Adani Green Energy (ADNA.NS) and Adani Ports (APSE.NS) sinking 20% each. Adani Ports, Adani Green Energy and Adani Transmission marked their worst intraday drop ever, with heavy volumes. Billionaire U.S. investor Bill Ackman said on Thursday that he found the Hindenburg report "highly credible and extremely well researched."
Adani Group has dismissed the report as baseless and said it is considering whether to take legal action against the New York-based firm. "There were heavy positions in Adani group (shares), the way they have risen in the last couple of years," said Neeraj Dewan, director at Quantum Securities in New Delhi. Shares of other listed Adani firms also plummetted, with Adani Transmission Ltd (ADAI.NS) Adani Total Gas (ADAG.NS), Adani Green Energy (ADNA.NS) and Adani Ports (APSE.NS) sinking 20% each. Adani Enterprises' net profit for the period ended Sept. 30, 2022 doubled to 9 billion Indian rupees ($110.31 million) while its total income nearly tripled to 795 billion Indian rupees, according to its share sale prospectus. The company's total liabilities as of September 2022 stood at 869 billion rupees ($10.64 billion), the prospectus showed.
Adani Group firms lost $11 billion in market capitalisation on Wednesday after New York-based Hindenburg Research flagged concerns in a report about debt levels and the use of tax havens. Adani Group dismissed the report as baseless. Adani Enterprises, the flagship company of a conglomerate led by world's fourth-richest man, Gautam Adani, aims to use the share sale proceeds for capital expenditure and to pay debt. Adani Group has repeatedly faced and dismissed concern about debt levels. The share sale "should sail through successfully."
COMMENTARYJ.P.MORGAN"While the Hindenburg report focused mainly on equity valuations within the group, we are primarily concerned about the underlying credit profiles of group companies given underlying bank exposures. Clearly given the size of the group and outstanding debt, this has also impacted the banks." So if a report comes and stocks see a sharp fall, lot of margin calls also get triggered. At least 40% of the group's debt is exposed to Indian banks, so that exposure is what people are worried about in banks. A surge of 'soft landing' hopes for the U.S. economy on Thursday got sideswiped overnight after a dire industry readout from chipmaking giant Intel decimated its stock price after the bell. "We expect some of the largest inventory corrections literally that we've ever seen in the industry," he told Reuters later. Annual 'core' PCE inflation is expected to have slowed to 4.4% last month, the lowest in more than a year, from 4.7% in November. U.S. bonds of Adani firms also fell after Hindenburg Research flagged concerns in a Jan. 24 report about debt levels and the use of tax havens. They do not reflect the views of Reuters News, which, under the Trust Principles, is committed to integrity, independence, and freedom from bias.
Mubadala Investment Co PJSC and BNP Paribas SA (BNPP.PA) have also bid for shares, the report said, adding that the anchor book was oversubscribed about two times. Adani Enterprises last week set the floor price for India's largest FPO at 3,112 rupees per share with a price cap of 3,276 rupees apiece. While bidding for anchor investors began on Wednesday, bidding for retail investors will commence from Friday, with the offer closing for both sets of investors on Jan. 31. Spokespersons for Adani Enterprises, LIC and SBI Life did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Adani has said it will use 108.69 billion rupees from the FPO to fund green hydrogen projects, airports facilities and greenfield expressways.
The project led by Adani, will have Ballard supply the fuel cell engine, while Indian truck maker Ashok Leyland will provide vehicle and technical support for the project. If the devices that do that, electrolysers, are powered by renewable energy, the product is called green hydrogen. The Indian government had recently approved an incentive plan of 174.9 billion rupees ($2.11 billion) to promote green hydrogen and had set green hydrogen consumption targets for some industries earlier this month. Indian companies such as Reliance Industries (RELI.NS), Indian Oil (IOC.NS), NTPC (NTPC.NS), Adani, JSW Energy (JSWE.NS), ReNew Power (RENE.BO) and Acme Solar (ACMO.NS) have big plans for green hydrogen. Adani has a tie-up with French energy company TotalEnergies (TTEF.PA) as part of a deal to form a new green hydrogen project in India.
