Computer science is not a new major at top schools, but with AI jobs in high-demand, there's a growing list of colleges and universities offering a four-year "AI" degree specifically. These programs generally move beyond the foundations of computer science to home in on topics such as machine learning, computing algorithms, data analytics and advanced robotics. Purdue University offers an AI undergraduate major, while many colleges and universities offer AI classes within their computer science department, even if there's not a dedicated major. The rise of AI-specific degree programs comes as companies are short on talent for this fast-developing field. According to the Georgetown University Center for Security and Emerging Technology, AI degrees have bucked the general trend in education since 2011, with positive degree conferral growth versus negative growth across all degree areas.

Last year, Chisom Okwulehie's architectural design business, Juntero, brought in $414,000 in revenue. While Juntero's first sales were mostly one-off graphic design gigs, the company soon attracted bigger projects, like floor plans for small businesses. By the end of 2021, Juntero had garnered $55,000 in revenue. Getting started: 'I've always been a hustler'In early 2021, Okwulehie had just given birth to her daughter and was looking to secure more income for her family. With Juntero, however, she's able to do more design work for residential projects.

Target fired me after I allowed one of my baristas to buy a Stanley x Starbucks cupI never even bought a Stanley cup for myself — I hate the cups if we're being honest. Getting fired emotionally destroyed me because I'd spent the past eight months putting all of my time and energy basically rebuilding the store’s entire Starbucks team. I would go on Indeed.com and apply for every single job that I qualify for — and jobs I was overqualified for. Now I'm going to look at every single job as a means to an end. Would you tell us how you are prepared to work effectively with colleagues and external stakeholders from backgrounds that are different from your own, and to contribute to our commitment to D.E.I.? I am not comfortable disclosing personal information (such as a non-visible disability, background as an immigrant, queer identity, etc.). I commended their commitment to D.E.I., not least because of the range of expertise and complementary skills it brings together. Do some research about different ways to answer this question, and think through how you can answer them using your own voice and perspective. But if there is something worth preserving in this relationship, tell your friend how her comments make you feel.

Bond yields fell, and traders of contracts tied to the Fed's policy rate now see only a 12% chance of a rate hike by January, down from 30% before the release of the employment report. Rate futures pricing now reflects a better-than-even chance of a Fed rate cut by May of 2024, with several more cuts expected later next year. U.S. central bankers themselves are not even thinking about rate cuts, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said this week after the Fed kept its benchmark overnight interest rate steady in the 5.25%-5.50% range. "Continued upward momentum would be troubling, and hopefully this recent rise levels off as the labor market recovery continues," said Indeed.com's Nick Bunker. Still for now, most of the worries about the labor market appear to be focused on what might, or might not, happen next rather than on the evidence so far.

Vesper Lounge is owned by Bonanno Concepts, which said it cut spending on Indeed by roughly 90%, largely because of the new pricing strategy. Photo: Joni SchrantzThe largest job-search site has run afoul of the small-business community. Indeed.com began changing how it charged employers for connecting them with job seekers, pitching the shift as better for small businesses because they could choose which applications to review and pay only for the ones they liked. Instead it created confusion and unexpected costs for many business owners, and now the company is trying to minimize the fallout.
New York CNN —BuzzFeed, Lyft, Whole Foods and Deloitte all recently announced layoffs affecting thousands of US workers. With 11,000 job cuts announced in November and the 10,000 announced in March, Meta’s headcount will fall to around 66,000 — a total reduction of about 25%. The company announced in January that it was eliminating some 18,000 positions as part of a major cost-cutting bid at the e-commerce giant. IndeedJob listing website Indeed.com announced cuts of approximately 2,200 employees, representing almost 15% of its total workforce, the company said in March. The cuts come after the company announced several rounds of job cuts throughout the pandemic due to falling demand, followed by rapid hiring last year.

“For too long we have been undervalued,” Vivek Trivedi, co-chair of the BMA junior doctors committee, told a crowd of striking doctors Tuesday. It is difficult to compare the salaries of UK junior doctors with those of their international peers, said Lucina Rolewicz, a researcher at Nuffield Trust, a healthcare think-tank. Junior doctors make up nearly 40% of England’s NHS doctors, according to the confederation. But NHS junior doctors have been squeezed for well over a decade, says former radiologist Tania King-Mohammad. “[Junior doctors’] pay is not reflective of their education, dedication and commitment,” King-Mohammad said.
Humanity has decided it can say 'no' to AI

The latest development in AI: humanity has decided it can say "no." Elon Musk was one of more than 1,000 people to sign an open letter calling for a six-month pause on advanced AI development. The letter cited several potential risks to humanity and society, including the spread of misinformation and automation of jobs. Bosses have forgotten how to say "good job" — and it's driving employees to quit. Big Tech's big downgrade.
Increased pay transparency leads employees to work harder, as long as they believe the pay system is fair, according to several new studies. New laws mandating that pay ranges be included on job listings have gone into effect in recent months in New York City, California and other places. In states where there are no such laws, companies still have to contend with national job boards, such as Indeed.com, that often put their own salary estimates on job advertisements.

Within an hour after the memo was released, employees outside of the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and Japan were expected to receive an email informing them of their status. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced that they will cut around 9,000 employees, primarily from Amazon Web Services, People Experience and Technology (PXT), advertising and Twitch. Meta also recently released its plan to cut 10,000 employees, on top of 11,000 layoffs announced last fall.

Walmart said Tuesday it would raise the average hourly wage of its associates to more than $17.50 an hour — up from about $17 an hour. The Job Market for Remote Workers Is Shrinking

Many prospective workers who were determined to get a remote job just a few months ago are hitting a wall as remote listings rapidly dwindle. After remote work surged during the pandemic, fewer employers now feel the need to lure talent with the promise of working from home. Remote jobs made up 13.2% of postings advertised on LinkedIn last month—down from 20.6% in March. Other job sites such as Indeed.com and ZipRecruiter also report declines in remote listings.
Since 2020 adults aged 25 to 34 are living at home at higher rates than past generations, said the Census Bureau. According to the US Census Bureau, about 18% of men and 12% of women ages 25 to 34 were living with their parents in 2022. Barwig estimates she's saving about $30,000 a year. "I don't really spend a lot of money," she said. She's been able to maintain the job as a mostly remote employee at the Jersey Shore, where her parents live.
