Parts of New England and the Northeast were under an unusual risk for tornadoes on Sunday as severe thunderstorms were expected to strike the region, forecasters said. The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch early Sunday afternoon for Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, northeastern New York and western Maine. More than 8 million people were under the watch, which signals that conditions could lead to severe storms or tornadoes. The watch is in effect until 8 p.m. The National Weather Service office in Albany, N.Y., warned of an enhanced risk of severe thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon and evening, and said such a risk was “more rare” for that part of the country.

The end of the unusually early heat wave that gripped much of the United States over the past seven days is in sight. Baltimore reached 101 degrees, breaking the daily high temperature record of 100 degrees, set in 1988. And in Dulles, Va., the temperature reached 100 degrees, breaking the previous record of 99 degrees, also set in 1988. The National Weather Service warned that the heat wave could be the longest experienced in decades for some locations. The health consequences of this heat wave are starting to show up in the data.

Heat-related emergency room visits spiked this week in regions of the United States that had been hit the hardest by the heat wave, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Across swaths of New England, the Midwest and the Mid-Atlantic states, there were “extremely high” rates of heat-related illnesses this week, the C.D.C.’s heat and health tracker showed. The data used emergency room visits associated with the heat to determine the rise in heat-related illnesses, showing which areas had visits that exceeded the 95th percentile of what is typical there. In New England, the number of visits climbed from 57 per 100,000 on Monday, the first day of the heat wave, to 833 on Thursday — the highest rate in the country all week. Caribou, Maine, reached 96 degrees this week, tying the highest temperature ever recorded there.

Like many flags and historical symbols, the Appeal to Heaven flag has multiple meanings and has been used in differing capacities. What is ‘An Appeal to Heaven?’The Appeal to Heaven flag, or “Pine Tree” flag, features a green pine tree on a white field, with the words “An Appeal to Heaven” in black text above it. The pine tree retained this meaning of resistance, and has appeared on some state flags and seals. However, the polarizing recent history of the Appeal to Heaven flag is starting to become known. This week, the city of San Francisco made the decision to remove an “Appeal to Heaven” flag that flew alongside several other flags over City Hall.

Here’s why we eat popcorn at the movies

But the perfect (and very profitable) pairing of today wasn’t always the case: For many years, movie theaters wanted nothing to do with the snack. People watch movies in a newly reopened AMC River East theater on Aug. 20, 2020, in Chicago. Popular movies often bring collectible cups and popcorn buckets, or, in industry-speak, Collectible Concession Vehicles (CCVs). The cinema business will continue to evolve, but one thing will remain constant, said Gil of Queen’s University. “Theaters will stop playing movies before they will actually stop selling popcorn.”

Jasper White, a chef who put New England’s traditional foods on the fine-dining map in the 1980s and mentored a generation of Boston-area chefs, died on Saturday in Boston. His death, at a hospital, was caused by a brain aneurysm, his wife, Kathleen White, said. At Restaurant Jasper in the North End of Boston, which was open from 1983 to 1995, and later at Jasper White’s Summer Shack, in three locations, Mr. White’s cooking was relentlessly focused on New England ingredients. “As a chef and as an advocate, he was more responsible than anyone for the revival of oysters and oyster bars in New England,” said Skip Bennett, the founder of Island Creek Oysters, an oyster farm and distributor in Duxbury, Mass. At a time when Boston’s destination-worthy dishes still included cornmeal pudding at the venerable Durgin-Park restaurant and fish chowder at the upmarket chain Legal Sea Foods, Mr. White developed an elegant but accessible style, based on local and seasonal ingredients like oysters, corn, maple and blueberries.

New York CNN —The good news is your child got into college and is preparing to enroll this fall. The bad news is that you’ve just learned the aid package your child’s school is offering is much smaller than you’d hoped. Over four years of college, students can take out a total of up to $27,000. “That’s cash-flow friendly while your child is in college,” Walker said. Also, Bogardus suggests checking to see if your state offers a tuition aid plan or subsidized loan rates for educational expenses.

Owner Drew Echols, a fifth-generation farmer, said it has become harder to predict when fruits like the iconic Georgia peaches would start blooming. Blooming peach trees are seen alongside a covered field of strawberries at Jaemor Farms in Alto, Georgia, on March 19, 2024. The fruits begin to bloom as temperatures warm, but when a cold spell comes back, they become susceptible to damage. Fruits like peaches, strawberries, mangoes and plums typically reach their peak ripeness during the summer months.

She applauded the new RAND survey for shedding light on what adults go through when they lose someone to overdose. “Those are some of the regions where we see the highest number of overdose deaths. This is also rarely discussed in scientific and policy circles,” Pollini said of the RAND survey. “Because the data come from a survey of adults, the study does not provide insight into how overdose deaths impact children.

Researchers found more than 6% of U.S. adults reported ever experiencing symptoms of long COVID as of 2022. Extrapolated to the U.S. population, it would mean more than 16 million adult Americans had experienced long COVID symptoms as of the survey. “State-level estimates might also help identify geographic disparities in Long COVID across the United States that could guide interventions to promote health equity.”Symptoms of long COVID can include tiredness, fatigue, difficulty thinking, “brain fog,” shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, menstrual changes and post-exertional malaise. The percentage of Americans who have experienced symptoms of long COVID are surely higher now than they were in 2022. Research published last week in the journal Pediatrics estimated that up to 5.8 million children have developed long COVID.

I once visited a domestic violence shelter in New England. It had three bedrooms and a shared kitchen and bath, beige walls and furniture and a single kitchen table that required eating in shifts. In exchange, traumatized families were given temporary housing with other traumatized families behind walls and gates, often with shared bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms. As a result, this guiding philosophy of secrecy as safety is drawing scrutiny from advocates, policymakers and survivors. Calls for what are termed open or public shelters appear to be on the rise.

Business Insider has spoken with a handful of real-estate investors who own profitable properties and asked what they look for in the acquisition phase. Go for multi-family propertiesA multi-family is a single building divided to house more than one family living separately and ranges from duplexes to triplexes and fourplexes. The idea is that your tenant's rent will cover some (or all) of your housing costs. Note that not all markets have an abundance of multi-family properties.
