Jesse Grant/Getty ImagesFor some, an adult autism diagnosis is an inflection point — the moment in which a clearer and more fulfilling existence starts anew. Whatever the perspective, an adult autism diagnosis is an identity builder, instantaneously minting new members of the growing autism community. As I read Nikhil Krishnan’s “A Terribly Serious Adventure: Philosophy and War at Oxford, 1900-1960,” I wondered how he would pull it off. Here was a scholar, determined to bring to life a school of thought (hard to do) that revolved around finicky distinctions in language (extremely hard to do). The “linguistic” or “analytical” turn in philosophy resisted grand speculations about reality and truth. Krishnan admits that even he had a hard time warming up to his subject when he first encountered it as a philosophy student at Oxford. That discrepancy is also a preoccupation of one of my favorite books this year, “The Rigor of Angels,” by William Egginton.

[1/6] A visitor stands next to a copy of German philosopher Immanuel Kant's death mask exhibited in the museum located at the Cathedral, also known as the Koenigsberg Cathedral, in Kaliningrad, Russia, November 26, 2023. "The principal mission of libraries is to preserve books," said Ruslan Aksyonkin, an expert at the culture and education centre at Baltic University in the city of Kaliningrad. Even so, modern-day Kaliningrad remains fond of its most famous German resident, despite the abstruseness of his ideas. The city's university bears his name, and Kant's tomb and a small exhibition on the philosopher have pride of place in the restored German cathedral. "But we do have certain items, and they are Kant's works published during his lifetime."

My Love Affair With Air-Conditioning

It took me a moment to see what he found so funny. I had grown up with the deprivations of Socialist India in the 1980s. I was hardwired to fetishize air-conditioning. It was not an adjunct to life, sewn seamlessly into our daily routines, as it is here in the U.S., where 82.7 million homes have central AC. It was, as the philosopher Immanuel Kant would say, the “thing-in-itself,” and to sit “in” AC was something of a national pastime.

The revelation of the Fomalhaut’s two inner rings has suggested that planets hidden deeper within the star system may be affecting the dust belt’s shape. Stars form from gas and dust, and then a ring of leftover material called a protoplanetary disk orbits the star, where planets are born. Once the planets form around a star, debris belts form and become shaped by the gravity of the planets. Studying the dust belts can help unlock more of the secrets behind how planetary systems form. “I think it’s not a very big leap to say there’s probably a really interesting planetary system around the star.”
It's a profit-making move designed to leverage our very human tendency to see human traits in nonhuman things. Look, I don't think we don't need to treat chatbots with respect because they ask us to. Making chatbots seem as if they're human isn't just incidental. So the real issue involving the current incarnation of chatbots isn't whether we treat them as people — it's how we decide to treat them as property. The robots don't care."
Polycrisis may lead to polycentric world order
  + stars: | 2022-12-19 | by ( Hugo Dixon | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
Another scenario is possible: a “polycentric order” with multiple centres of authority, where the United States is the leading power but not the hegemonic one. Indeed, the outlines of such an order may already be emerging out of the conflagration of economic, political and other shocks often labelled the polycrisis. A polycentric order would be different from what is often called a “multipolar” system - a dog-eats-dog world where big powers have a licence to dominate their neighbours. The United States is not nearly as powerful as it was. President Joe Biden realises the United States needs allies, says Peter Engelke of the Atlantic Council think tank.
