CNN —For every other figure-skater, landing a quadruple axel lies outside the realms of possibilities, attempted but never accomplished by an endless parade of skating greats. For American teenage prodigy Ilia Malinin though, they are simply part of his routine. And landing one on Saturday propelled him to his first ever world title after a record-breaking performance in the free skate at the World Figure Skating Championship. I am so glad to be here on top right now.”Ilia Malinin won his first world title. His gold medal was the US’s second at this World Championships after Madison Chock and Evan Bates won the ice dance earlier on Saturday.

Ilia Malinin established such a big lead after his peerless short program at the U.S. After starting his program with a textbook quad axel — a jump only Malinin has landed in competition — he doubled a planned quad loop, fell on a quad lutz and doubled another planned quad. He followed with a perfect quad lutz before a mistake on his planned quad loop, which he turned into a double that appeared to slow down his momentum. Malinin recovered to land a quad salchow before falling on his quad lutz. The 29-year-old Brown, performing his “The Impossible Dream” program from last year, opened with two brilliant triple axels — one in sequence with a double — after missing the same jump during his short program.

CNN —American teenager Ava Marie Ziegler won her first ISU Grand Prix Figure Skating title, as she sealed victory at the NHK Trophy in Osaka, Japan following a sparkling routine in the free skate. “I really used my fifth-place result yesterday to motivate me because I know that I could do better and I really used it to push me to be the best that I could be,” Ziegler said, according to the International Skating Union. It (this result) definitely helped with my confidence.”Ava Marie Ziegler of the United States reacts to her score. While Ziegler and Thorngren have not qualified for the final, their compatriots Isabeau Levito and Ilia Malinin will represent the USA in the women’s and men’s singles, respectively.

CNN —American teenager Isabeau Levito has won her first senior major international figure staking competition, claiming the Grand Prix de France title on Saturday to set up a potential US clean sweep this weekend. Despite finishing third in the Free Skate, the 16-year-old’s overall total of 203.22 was enough for victory and qualification to December’s Grand Prix Final. Thankfully for Levito, the top three from the Short Program all failed to dazzle on Saturday. Grand Prix de France is the third of the six Grands Prix of the season. The 18-year-old is in first place after the Short Program.

CNN —Figure skating phenomenon Ilia Malinin defended his title at Skate America on Saturday with a personal-best score of 310.47 points in the season-opening Grand Prix. American figure skater Ilia Malinin began his Grand Prix season in a familiar place. I was not expecting that,” said Malinin, who won both of his Grand Prix assignments in his senior debut last season. The competition resumes Saturday with the men's and pairs free skates, the rhythm dance and the women's short program. Then came the quad lutz, the second-hardest jump behind the quad axel, and Malinin combined it with a triple toe loop to drive up his score. His triple axel looked easy given he is perfectly capable of doing a quad.

CNN —American teenager Ilia Malinin landed the second ever quadruple axel in competition on Saturday without so much as a wobble. Malinin had become the first person ever to complete a quadruple axel in competition last month during the US International Figure Skating Classic, a lower-level event. But still, he was unsure whether to incorporate figure skating’s most difficult move into his free skate routine at Skate America. Meanwhile, reigning Olympic champion Nathan Chen has successfully landed every other type of quadruple jump except for the axel. And so, when Malinin – the junior world champion – landed a jump that had eluded so many before him, it marked a remarkable moment in figure skating history.
