Russian commandos quashed a mutiny at a southern Russian prison on Friday, killing the attackers and freeing their hostages, according to the local governor. Inmates claiming to be motivated by radical Islam and armed with makeshift knives and an explosive vest briefly took control of Penal Colony No. 19 in the southern Volgograd region, according to videos posted on social media and verified by The New York Times. The Russian prison service said four guards had been killed and three injured in the attack. Four of the attackers were killed by snipers as the Russian commandos stormed the prison late Friday afternoon, ending the mutiny.

CNN —Prisoners at a Russian maximum security penal colony have killed one staff member and took others hostage, Russian state media reported Friday. Inmates captured correctional facility staff at a disciplinary commission meeting, Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia told state media outlet TASS. The incident took place at penal colony IK-19 in in the town of Surovikino, in Russia’s southern Volgograd region. At least three prisoners participated in the attack, according to TASS, and a hostage rescue operation is underway. Video circulating on Russian social media appears to show four prison staff members taken hostage, one of whom is covered in blood.

Morgan Stanley raised its price target on Rivian to $17 from $13. Analyst Frank Lee did raise his price target to $200 from $190, although he added that "the risk-reward is less attractive now." CNN —A multi-country prisoner exchange that might have freed Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny was being discussed and progressing when he died last month, multiple sources have told CNN, and included the direct involvement of a Russian oligarch, Roman Abramovich. However, a source close to Navalny’s team told CNN that on the evening of February 15 they had received word that a message had been delivered to Putin. Clinton “initially passed on the message” to US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, Grozev told CNN. “We had to find a way to package the German asset [Krasikov] into an American negotiation,” the source close to the Navalny team said. Getting the message to Putin was one of the greatest challenges, the individual close to the Navalny team told CNN.

CNN —Vogue China editorial director Margaret Zhang has announced that she is stepping down just three years after becoming the youngest person to lead any of the fashion bible’s 28 editions. Zhang’s appointment as Vogue China’s editorial director in 2021 came as something of a surprise. But she also won praise for modernizing Vogue China and championing diversity at the title. In her resignation announcement, Zhang said the publication had enjoyed “record growth in video” and the “highest engagement events in the history of Vogue China” during her editorship. The Ghanaian-born fashion editor unexpectedly stepped down last June after more than six years at the helm.

CNN —The mother of Russian opposition politician Alexey Navalny, who died in an Arctic penal colony last week, said Thursday she had seen her son’s body and was being pressured to hold a secret funeral. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told CNN’s Matthew Chance that he had not seen the comments from Navalny’s mother regarding her son’s body and the issues she claims she is experiencing with investigators. He was initially imprisoned in a penal colony about 150 miles east of Moscow, but his lawyers in December said they had lost contact with him for nearly three weeks.

In a letter sent to a friend, a photographer named Evgeny Feldman, Navalny said former President Donald Trump's agenda for a second term was "really scary," according to the Times. He said if President Joe Biden were to have a health issue, "Trump will become president," adding: "Doesn't this obvious thing concern the Democrats?" The journalist Sergei Parkhomenko said he received a letter from Navalny on February 13, a few days before Navalny's death was announced. Trump, for his part, didn't mention Navalny in the days after his death, despite condemnations from other leaders who directly blamed Putin.

"Alexei Navalny paid with his life for his resistance to a system of oppression," France's Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne said. "My sincere belief is that it was the conditions of detention that led to Navalny's death," Russian newspaper editor and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dmitry Muratov told Reuters. Navalny long forecast Russia could face seismic political turmoil, including revolution, because he said Putin built a brittle system of personal rule reliant on sycophancy and corruption.

Russia’s prison service said it was investigating the “sudden death” of Navalny. Navalny’s spokesperson, Kira Yarmysh, said his lawyer is traveling to Kharp, where Navalny has been held since December. The White House at the time said it was “deeply concerned” about the reports of Navalny’s disappearance. “Navalny has never been hidden for so long,” Navalny’s team said in a Telegram post.
