White phosphorus is a waxy substance that ignites instantly when exposed to oxygen. During 20th century conflicts, including World War II and Vietnam, the U.S. used white phosphorus against enemy troops. The Pentagon recommendation was to provide white phosphorus artillery shells to Ukraine to produce light and smoke, not for use against enemy troops. White phosphorus munitions are not illegal and white phosphorus is not classified as a chemical weapon under the Chemical Weapons Convention. The Palestinian Foreign Ministry asserts that Israel used phosphorus bombs in its attacks on populated areas in Gaza City on Oct. 11, 2023.

It was the second knife attack on Japanese children and third assault on foreigners in China in recent months. “As a Chinese, I feel heartbroken, outraged and ashamed,” said a Shenzhen resident who laid a white rose outside the Japanese school following the boy’s death last Thursday. The killing has shaken the Japanese community in China, with some of Japan’s biggest companies offering to repatriate staff members and their families. Generations of Chinese grew up learning about the atrocities committed by Japanese soldiers in school textbooks and on state television. “There is no so-called Japan-hating education in China,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Monday.

Read previewThe US military has published photos for the first time that show a fifth-generation F-35 fighter armed with a stealthy long-range anti-ship missile. The photo, released on Monday, shows an F-35C Lightning II carrying two AGM-158C Long-Range Anti-Ship Missiles (LRASMs) during a flight test conducted earlier this month. Efforts to integrate the missile with the carrier-based variant of the advanced F-35 stealth fighter underscore the military's push to expand its anti-ship capabilities across new platforms. The military has acknowledged an increasing need for these capabilities, particularly as rivals like China strengthen their navies. The F-35 doesn't have a dedicated anti-ship missile, making the LRASM a valuable addition.

Hungary offers citizenship based on jus sanguinis with some caveats, too. “When both of my parents got their Hungarian citizenship around four years ago, it made it easier for me to get it,” said Koszorus, 41, who received his Hungarian citizenship this summer, less than a year after he started the paperwork and application process. And a private Facebook group called Dual US-Italian Citizenship has more than 70,000 members and is among many other resources available to people who think they might have a blood right path to Italian citizenship. Reuters —Russia appears to have suffered a “catastrophic failure” in a test of its Sarmat missile, a key weapon in the modernization of its nuclear arsenal, according to arms experts who have analyzed satellite images of the launch site. It’s a big hole in the ground,” said Pavel Podvig, an analyst based in Geneva, who runs the Russian Nuclear Forces project. A September 21 satellite image shows a closer view of the launch site after the apparent launch failure. Maxar TechnologiesIISS analyst Wright said a test failure did not necessarily mean that the Sarmat program was in jeopardy. “However, this is the fourth successive test failure of Sarmat which at the very least will push back its already delayed introduction into service even further and at most might raise questions about the program’s viability,” he said.

Tokyo, Japan (AP) — Japan said its warplanes used flares to warn a Russian reconnaissance aircraft to leave northern Japanese airspace on Monday. It came a day after a joint fleet of Chinese and Russian warships sailed around Japanese northern coasts. Earlier in September, Russian military aircraft flew around southern Japanese airspace. The Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning, accompanied by two destroyers, sailed between Japan’s westernmost island of Yonaguni and nearby Iriomote, entering close to Japan’s waters. According to Japan’s military, it scrambled jets nearly 669 times between April 2023 and March 2024, about 70% of the time against Chinese military aircraft, though that did not include airspace violations.

The same day that Jenevieve Judd gave birth to her son, John Elliott, in October 1944, she received a crushing telegram from the U.S. military informing her that her husband had gone missing while serving in World War II. Mr. Elliott, now 79, said that his mother had told him that she had been so affected by the news of his father’s disappearance that it made labor more difficult, possibly causing Mr. Elliott to spend the first week of his life in an oxygen tank after being born purple. Over the years, Ms. Judd told her son extremely little about her missing husband, who remained unaccounted for until May of this year. John A. Tarbert of the Air Force was killed at 24 after his plane was attacked while flying over Germany 80 years ago this Friday. “I’m a low-key kind of a guy, and the excitement is just beginning to kind of swell up inside me,” Mr. Elliott said in an interview on Monday.

Some of the IDF brass feared that missile defense would lead to a defensive mentality, rather than taking the war to the enemy. Ran Kochav, the former head of Israel's air and missile defense system. Indeed, there were similar criticisms in the US as to whether President Ronald Reagan's "Star Wars" missile defense would work. Israel's missile defense system faced its most difficult test in April, when Iran launched hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel. Ultimately, the virtue of missile defense may be that it is the least bad alternative.

Hussein Malla / AP“We have examples where supply chains were compromised in very elaborate, long lasting, super sophisticated ways for espionage. This may be the first supply chain attack that actually really deserves to be called a supply chain attack,” said Thomas Rid, a Johns Hopkins University professor who studies the history of intelligence operations. “Supply chain compromises are tried and true in intelligence work,” said Harding, who is the director of the Intelligence, National Security, and Technology Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “I literally cannot think of a single example that is unclassified.”But she said the combined scope, planning and violence behind the pager and walkie-talkie operation made it a unique incident in the history of supply chain compromises. While the attack in Lebanon broke with spy agencies’ tradition by using a supply chain for an attack rather than for espionage, it could benefit Israel’s military objectives and have larger political implications.

Kraków was full of well-preserved history. We were also fascinated with Rome's ancient history during our Italian vacation, but Kraków surprised us with an incredible mix of older and newer sites. As Luc explained on the episode, the city is special because it remained relatively unscathed during World War II. It's one of the best-preserved cities in Europe, with a charming old town square and an enchanting Jewish quarter.
