Microsoft will lay off some employees who work on mixed reality, a spokesperson told CNBC on Monday. Although the cuts will affect the department that contributes to the HoloLens 2 augmented reality headset, Microsoft plans to continue selling the device. "Earlier today we announced a restructuring of the Microsoft's Mixed Reality organization," the spokesperson said in an email. In addition, we will continue to invest in W365 to reach the broader Mixed Reality hardware ecosystem. In December, Microsoft further reduced investment in augmented reality and virtual reality, which blocks out the surrounding world, when it deprecated Windows Mixed Reality, which included tools for running applications in head-mounted displays.

Microsoft said on Tuesday that small businesses can now subscribe to its Copilot virtual assistant in the company's productivity apps. And consumers who pay for the Microsoft 365 software can sign up for a new paid version of Copilot. But those who pay for Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscriptions haven't been able to use it in Word, Excel, Outlook and other apps. Those with Copilot Pro receive "priority access to the very latest models — starting today with OpenAI's GPT-4 Turbo," Mehdi wrote. "Whether you need advanced help with writing, coding, designing, researching or learning, Copilot Pro brings greater performance, productivity and creativity," Mehdi wrote.

Thursday's early calls featured a retail upgrade and an EV charging stock downgrade. The analyst reiterated his buy rating and $450 price target on the stock. Microsoft's AI cybersecurity solution Security Copilot, which was only recently expanded through an early access program on Oct. 19, already has tons of pent-up interest, Thill said. The firm downgraded shares from neutral to underperform and lowered its price target on the stock by $17 to $43. He gave the stock a $50 price target — $13 higher from the previous one — which implies 23.1% upside for shares since Wednesday's close.

A custom-built rack for the Maia 100 AI Accelerator and its "sidekick" inside a thermal chamber at a Microsoft lab in Redmond, Washington. The first, its Maia 100 artificial intelligence chip, could compete with Nvidia's highly sought-after AI graphics processing units. In addition to designing the Maia chip, Microsoft has devised custom liquid-cooled hardware called Sidekicks that fit in racks right next to racks containing Maia servers. Moving from GPUs to AWS Trainium AI chips can be more complicated than migrating from Intel Xeons to Gravitons, though. Microsoft on Wednesday announced a slew of new capabilities coming to the Copilot artificial intelligence add-on for its Microsoft 365 productivity applications. There are concerns about whether Copilot for Microsoft 365 is worth $30 per person per month. Copilot will be able to create Teams chat messages and come up with tone changes. During Teams meetings, the Whiteboard tool can automatically create visualizations of ideas that people discuss. In PowerPoint, Copilot will be able to create slides that include AI-generated images based on brand assets, with the help of the Microsoft Designer app.

Microsoft is not focused on China as a domestic market, though the company has notable Chinese customers with operations outside the world's second most-populous country, CEO Satya Nadella said on Wednesday. "A lot of the Chinese multinationals operating outside of China are our bigger AI customers, perhaps." Microsoft provides artificial intelligence services to electric vehicle maker Li Auto and consumer electronics company Xiaomi, among others. Still, Nadella acknowledged on Wednesday that the U.S. government has important restrictions to follow when it comes to doing business in China. The U.S government uses Microsoft Azure cloud services and Microsoft 365 productivity apps.

Starting in-person Tuesday in Seattle and livestreamed from Wednesday, Microsoft's "Ignite" event consists of three days of product announcements and various keynotes from technology executives. At the Club, we'll be looking for initial evidence of a return on investment (ROI) for Microsoft's AI products — particularly the company's recently launched AI assistant, 365 Copilot . MSFT YTD mountain Microsoft (MSFT) year-to-date performance Piper Sandler reiterated the Club's take that evidence of early adoption around Copilot, along with ROI, could be bullish for Microsoft. Bottom line Microsoft stock, up more than 54% year-to-date, has surged in 2023 on the generative AI boom. If the Ignite conference provides further evidence that Microsoft's large bet on AI is paying off, it would likely be positive for the stock.

The Metaverse, the once-buzzy technology that promised to allow users to hang out awkwardly in a disorientating video-game-like world, has died after being abandoned by the business world. After a much-heralded debut, the Metaverse became the obsession of the tech world and a quick hack to win over Wall Street investors. Once the tech industry turned to a new, more promising trend — generative AI — the fate of the Metaverse was sealed. But the short life and ignominious death of the Metaverse offers a glaring indictment of the tech industry that birthed it. Roblox, an online game platform that has existed since 2004, rode the Metaverse hype wave to an initial public offering and a $41 billion valuation.
