Tokyo CNN —A pair of blood-spattered trousers in a miso tank and an allegedly forced confession helped send Iwao Hakamata to death row more than five decades ago. Now, the world’s longest-serving death row convict has a chance to clear his name. During the retrial, Hakamata’s lawyers argued new information proved his innocence, while prosecutors claimed there was enough evidence to confirm he should be hanged for the crime. And some say it’s one of the reasons why the country should do away with the death penalty. “I’m against the death penalty,” Hideko said.

Japan's Nikkei 225 surged 2.01% to cross the 34,000 mark for the first time since March 1990, closing at 34,441.72. The broader based Topix also gained, climbing 1.3% to end at 2,444.48 and also hitting levels not seen in more than 30 years. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index dropped 0.49%, while the mainland China's CSI 300 lost 0.47% to finish at 3,277.13, hitting its lowest level since Jan. 31, 2019.

Japan's economy posted its third straight quarterly expansion, provisional government data showed Tuesday, as robust exports growth helped the world's third-largest economy expand 6% in the second quarter, handily beating market expectations. Economist surveyed by Reuters had expected the world's third-largest economy to post 3.1% growth in the April-June quarter. Quarter-on-quarter, the Japanese economy expanded 1.5%, topping expectations for 0.8% growth. Japan's current account balance logged the fifth straight month of surplus in June as the trade balance swung to a surplus, government data showed on Tuesday, easing some concerns about any decline in purchasing power of the world's third largest economy. The current account surplus stood at 1.51 trillion yen, or $10.6 billion, in June, Ministry of Finance data showed. That marked an expansion of about 1 trillion yen from the same month a year earlier and compared with economists' median forecast for a surplus of 1.4 trillion yen in a Reuters poll.

May 29 (Reuters) - SoftBank Group Corp (9984.T) owned chip designer Arm on Monday rolled out new technology for mobile devices and Taiwan smartphone chip maker MediaTek Inc (2454.TW) said it will be using it for its next-generation product. In Arm's blog announcing the new products, MediaTek said the new chips will help improve the performance of its next-generation smartphones. "Investors have become extremely sensitive to any news about AI or chip technology and jumped on this Arm news," said Masahiro Ichikawa, chief market strategist at Sumitomo Mitsui DS Asset Management. Last month the Financial Times reported that Arm was developing its own chip to showcase the capabilities of its designs. Arm said the Cortex-X4 was taped out on TSMC's N3E process and said it was an industry first.
