USA Hockey is mandating neck laceration protection for all players under the age of 18, the latest development in the wake of the death of a player in England from a skate cut to the neck. The decision announced Sunday comes three months after American Adam Johnson died after taking a skate blade to the neck during a game in the Elite Ice Hockey League. The International Ice Hockey Federation has since mandated neck guards for players at all levels at the tournaments it runs. The governing body for the sport in the U.S. also said it strongly recommends that adults wear neck protection. “I know throughout our organization, the overwhelming opinion was that the time is appropriate to modify our rules related to neck laceration protection,” USA Hockey executive director Pat Kelleher said.

He was arrested on Tuesday, and released on bail on Wednesday pending further inquiries. Petgrave skates toward Johnson and collides with another Panthers player. Mandatory Credit: Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 1 (Reuters) - The National Hockey League (NHL) and the union representing its players have been in contact regarding further safety measures after a player in Britain's Elite Ice Hockey League died when an opposing player's skate blade cut his neck. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in an ESPN report on Wednesday that the league wants to prioritize protection but added that players have the right to make decisions for themselves. The English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA), which is the sport's governing body in England and Wales, said this week the safety of players must take precedence above all else and made neck guards mandatory from Jan. 1 for all on-ice activities. The EIHA did not make neck guards mandatory with immediate effect due to anticipated supply issues but made a "strong recommendation" that players at all levels across English Ice Hockey start using a neck guard. The NHLPA also educates players each year on the benefits of wearing the cut-resistant equipment so they can make informed equipment choices.

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — It’s a frequent — and most often frantic — high-pitched yell when kids playing street hockey in North America know their game is about to be interrupted. While ice hockey in Australia is definitely non-traditional, it's been around for a while, and has a profile. Ice hockey has a surprising 120-year history in Australia. Organized hockey games featuring more North American rules started when ice rinks opened up a few years later in 1906 in Melbourne and Sydney. The first Australian-born NHL player — Jordan Spence — made his NHL debut during the 2021-22 season with the Kings.

REUTERS/Julia Nikhinson/File PhotoJune 30 (Reuters) - A new professional women's ice hockey league will launch in January 2024, bringing together the world's best players in a unified league, it was announced on Friday. News of the league ends a long-running divide between the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association (PWHPA) and the seven-team Premier Hockey Federation (PHF). Established in 2015 as the National Women's Hockey League, the NWHL rebranded to become the PHF in 2021 and its teams competed each year for the Isobel Cup. The deal has also grabbed the attention of the National Hockey League (NHL), which has long said it would not provide fiscal support so long as there were two competing leagues. "The National Hockey League congratulates the Professional Women's Hockey Players' Association and the Premier Hockey Federation on their agreement," the NHL said in a statement.
