REUTERS/Umit Bektas/File PhotoTurkey is expected to report this week that its economy bounced back from a sharp coronavirus-induced slump earlier this year. Doctors and opposition politicians have called for stricter measures, but with shops, restaurants and hotels already hit by the new clampdown, the government is anxious to avoid further economic pain and said people had a personal duty to cooperate. As long as these are not heeded, especially in big cities, the increasing continuation of (the virus) becomes inevitable,” he told reporters. “Based on current data, we look to be at the top of the worldwide list of cases per population,” he told Reuters.

Saudi Arabia has suspended Turkish meat imports - Turkish union

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia formally suspended imports of meat, eggs and other products from Turkey earlier this month, the Turkish exporters’ union said, after a months-long informal boycott of Turkish goods over political tensions between the two regional rivals. REUTERS/Umit BektasTurkish exporters have reported increasing obstacles to trade in Saudi Arabia, as businessmen in the Gulf Arab state have led calls for bans on Turkish imports and as ties between the two countries deteriorated. Ankara says it has been told by Riyadh that there is no formal boycott, but the exporters’ union said it had been informed by Turkey’s trade ministry that imports of some Turkish goods had been suspended earlier this month. Turkey’s Exporters Assembly says exports to Saudi Arabia fell 16% in the first 10 months of this year to $2.23 billion. “Even though there was no official ban, we were unable to send many products to Saudi Arabia anyway, including chicken products,” said Sait Koca, general manager of a poultry company.

NAIROBI/ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s political slogan is “medemer” - or “coming together”. But some analysts say reforms meant to unify Ethiopia have inflamed simmering ethnic and political divisions and risk unravelling Africa’s second most populous nation. The TPLF frames the conflict as a battle for the rights of Ethiopia’s 10 regions against a premier bent on centralising power. They say Abiy has discriminated against Tigrayans since he came to power and have referred to his rule as an “illegal, unitarist and personalistic dictatorship”. The TPLF has fired missiles at its capital Asmara and says Eritrea is now fighting alongside Ethiopian troops in Tigray, which Ethiopia denies.

One of Saudi Arabia's most prominent women's rights campaigners, Loujain al-Hathloul, shook uncontrollably and spoke in an uncharacteristically faint voice during a rare court appearance this week, a family member told NBC News on Thursday. Loujain, 31, was told during the hearing that her case would be transferred to the country's Specialized Criminal Court, which deals with terrorism cases, Lina said. Lynn Maalouf, deputy regional director for the Middle East and North Africa at London-based rights campaigner Amnesty International, called the court transfer "a disturbing move." Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have said that at least three jailed women's rights activists, including Loujain, have been held in solitary confinement and subjected to abuse including electric shocks, flogging and sexual assault. Demonstrators from Amnesty International stage a protest on International Women's day in 2019 to urge Saudi authorities to release jailed women's rights activists Loujain al-Hathloul, Eman al-Nafjan and Aziza al-Yousef outside the Saudi embassy in Paris, France.

ANKARA (Reuters) - President Tayyip Erdogan’s decision to oust Turkey’s central bank chief this month was made hours after briefings on the fragile state of the economy, a snap judgement that prompted his son-in-law to resign as finance minister, four sources said. Turkish court adds new Saudi defendants in Khashoggi trial

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - A Turkish court on Tuesday added new defendants to the case against Saudi officials charged over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, state media reported, in a trial that Ankara says is needed to reveal the full truth behind the killing. Turkish officials believe his body was dismembered and removed, while his remains have not been found. In September a Saudi court jailed eight people for between seven and 20 years over the killing, in a trial that critics said lacked transparency. Yasin Aktay, a member of President Tayyip Erdogan’s AK Party and an acquaintance of Khashoggi, said a just verdict could not have been expected from a Saudi court that was ruling on senior Saudi officials. The first indictment accused two top Saudi officials, former deputy head of Saudi Arabia’s general intelligence Ahmed al-Asiri and former royal court adviser Saud al-Qahtani, of instigating murder.

(CNN) Bruno Fernandes was in inspirational form during Manchester United's 4-1 win against Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League on Tuesday. The Portugal international scored two goals in a devastating first-half display that included a sublime strike for his opener. The 26-year-old sent a perfect half-volley flying into the net after just nine minutes and followed it up with a simple finish to double his tally within 20 minutes. However, the night could have been even better for Fernandes, who was handed a golden opportunity to complete his hat trick after the referee awarded the Turkish hosts a penalty. United's usual penalty-taker, who scored a spot-kick Saturday, looked set to take the penalty but opted to pass the ball to Marcus Rashford instead.

France has denounced a false viral claim that the government will require all Muslim schoolchildren to have an ID tag. The French government has moved to quash a viral fake news story that said it was assigning every Muslim child an ID tag. Under the bill, all children will be assigned an ID number, so their attendance at school can be ensured. However, reams of tweets and news reports claimed it was just Muslim children that would be targeted. Macron, who has defended secularism, known as lacité in France, said France would not censor people to avoid causing offense.

They were joined on Thursday by former deputy prime minister Bulent Arinc, now on the presidency’s High Advisory Board. “Even though we have worked together in the past, no one’s personal comments can be linked to the president, our government or the party,” Erdogan said in a speech to party members. Kavala was acquitted in February of charges related to street protests in 2013 that threatened then-premier Erdogan’s grip on power, but was re-arrested the same day on charges related to a failed coup in 2016, in which he denies any role. Armenia and Azerbaijan signed an agreement last week to end six weeks of bloody fighting over the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh. We'll probably see an emergence of a new regional security framework where the West is absent and the presence of the Russian peacekeepers has not been sanctioned by the UN. Instead, it's just an agreement between Russia and the two parties to the conflict, with Turkey in the background. Or Russia can try to broker a deal with Azerbaijan and Turkey in order to let the Russian peacekeepers stay. Now the Russian military is back.

Rights activists, Turkey’s Western allies and some opposition parties have called for the release of Selahattin Demirtas and Osman Kavala, on grounds that their continued detention in separate cases pointed towards political pressure on the judiciary. Erdogan and his AK Party say courts are independent and that the measures were needed to address security risks. The charges against Demirtas are related to his role in violent protests against the Turkish army’s inaction during a militant attack on the Syrian Kurdish town Kobani. Kavala, now jailed on espionage charges related to the 2016 failed coup, was earlier acquitted from charges related to anti-government protests in 2013. Turkey issues detention warrants for 101 people on alleged terrorism links

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish authorities have issued detention warrants for 101 people including lawyers and doctors as part of what they called terrorism-related investigations, a security source and state-owned Anadolu news agency said on Friday. Authorities launched the operation from the southeastern province of Diyarbakir and sought suspects across four cities and a total of 106 residential addresses, the source said. Milena Buyum, Turkey campaigner for Amnesty International, said the lawyers’ detentions clashed with recent talk of judicial reforms, which have also been mentioned by President Tayyip Erdogan. The PKK, designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and European Union, has fought against the state in the southeast since 1984. After Trump’s Embrace, Saudis Brace for a Chillier Tone From Biden

BEIRUT, Lebanon — For the last four years, President Trump’s close relationship with Saudi Arabia meant that there was seemingly nothing its de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, could do to earn a rebuke from the White House. Saudi bombs killed civilians in Yemen, Saudi activists went to jail, and Saudi agents dismembered the dissident Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul. None of it shook Mr. Trump’s commitment to the kingdom as a reliable partner against Iran and an important purchaser of American weapons. Now Saudi Arabia is bracing for a new American leader who has vowed to end support for the Yemen war, penalize human rights violations and treat Saudi Arabia like “the pariah that they are.”“It is past time to restore a sense of balance, perspective and fidelity to our values in our relationships in the Middle East,” President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. told the Council on Foreign Relations last year when asked about Saudi Arabia. “We will make clear that America will never again check its principles at the door just to buy oil or sell weapons.”

A Turkish flag, with the New and the Suleymaniye mosques in the background, flies on a passenger ferry in Istanbul, Turkey, April 11, 2019. LONDON (Reuters Breakingviews) - Turkey’s new central bank governor has made an excellent start. The rate hike and the increased transparency is a bold move for a central bank plagued by interference from Erdogan and a good start at rebuilding market trust. The central bank has only $16 billion left in net foreign exchange reserves. But the new rate at least means the policy rate is finally higher than inflation.
