“Deadpool & Wolverine” is dominating the charts again after earning $28.3 million on Friday. Rivals are putting the Disney release at a 55% drop though, demonstrating that “Deadpool & Wolverine” has immense appeal beyond Marvel diehards. “Deadpool & Wolverine” looks to blast past that figure in only in its second weekend and there’s no real signs of slowing down after that. Universal also has another top five slot with “Despicable Me 4,” still drawing a crowd in its fifth weekend of release. Total domestic gross surpassed $300 million earlier this week — one of only three titles this year to notch that milestone.

Those marks include the highest domestic opening of 2024 and the biggest debut ever for an R-rated film. "Deadpool and Wolverine" is the 34th film to be released under the MCU banner and the first to garner an R-rating from the Motion Picture Association. The previous two Deadpool films, both rated R, were produced and released through 20th Century Fox. Jacob said "Deadpool and Wolverine" is filled with Easter eggs and audiences will return to try and see them all. There's also a genuine curiosity about how the MCU's first R-rated film will play out and hold to the qualities which made the first two Deadpool films and [Jackman's 2017 Wolverine film] 'Logan' so popular."

Imax is due for a rally as Hollywood continues getting back on track after last year's strikes, according to Seaport Research Partners. Analyst David Joyce initiated coverage of the stock, known for its large movie screens, at a buy rating. Joyce's $23 price target implies the stock can rally 30% from Tuesday's closing level. Joyce called Imax a small-cap way to play the normalization of the film industry after joint strikes from writers and actors last year stalled production and delayed some releases. The analyst also believes the stock is not trading like an "experience economy" play despite fitting the mold.

Read previewThis weekend my family went to the movies, twice. This past holiday weekend was the worst Memorial Day showing Hollywood has seen in decades, with ticket sales down a staggering 40% from last year. One thing Hollywood is very good at is generating explanations for a flop — or in this case, multiple flops. (I paid $44.76 for the two Furiousa tickets I bought over the weekend at my local Alamo Drafthouse. I don't think movies or movie theaters are going away.

Hollywood executives — not all, but most — have insisted for years that uncomfortable, thought-provoking, original movies can no longer attract big audiences at the box office. Alex Garland’s dystopian “Civil War,” set in a near-immediate future when the United States is at war with itself, sold an estimated $25.7 million in tickets at North American theaters, enough to make the film a strong No. 1, surpassing the monsters sequel “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.” Ticket sales for “Civil War” exceeded the prerelease expectations of some box office analysts by roughly 30 percent. IMAX screenings provided nearly 50 percent of the “Civil War” gross. “Civil War,” starring Kirsten Dunst as a journalist on a military embed, became the latest example of ticket buyers breaking with Hollywood’s conventional wisdom about what types of films are likely to pop at the box office.

CNN —Last week, I ditched work one day and went to a matinee at a local AMC theater. It was a Timothée Chalamet movie, because statistically of course it was. There are few things this movie nerd loves more than a big, loud sci-fi fantasy epic on an IMAX screen. It’s as if big movie chains are responding to the dire warnings about the death of their industry by deciding they’ll simply force-feed their remaining audience as much monetizable property as possible. Long live the fun movie theater experience, which is totally possible!

Christopher Nolan didn't just get Oscar gold for "Oppenheimer," he also made a whole lot of green. "Oppenheimer" — which took home seven Academy Awards this weekend, including Best Picture — earned more than $950 million at the global box office, buoyed in part by its 70-millimeter IMAX release. Nolan's earnings were boosted by box office escalators as well as bonuses for winning both Best Director and Best Picture, according to the report. Reports of Nolan's payday arrived on the heels of a Forbes report that Margot Robbie took home $78 million in gross earnings thanks largely to the massive success of "Barbie", which raked in nearly $1.5 billion at the box office. “Dune: Part Two” and its A-list cast jump-started moviegoing in North America after a dismal start to the year. The science-fiction sequel sold an estimated $81.5 million in tickets in the United States and Canada from Thursday night to Sunday, the biggest opening for a Hollywood film since “Barbie” in July. (Taylor Swift’s concert documentary arrived to $93 million in October.) “Dune: Part Two,” directed by Denis Villeneuve, collected an additional $97 million overseas. But Legendary also needed to sell the film’s more delicate story — a boy becoming a man, a guy falling in love — which would be more difficult without cast interviews.

The sequel beat out the first Dune installment, which opened with $41 million when it was released in domestic theaters in October 2021. According to Comscore data, “Dune: Part Two” is the largest opening for Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson and Austin Butler. Box office revenue is down 13.5% compared to this time last year, Comscore data shows. February and March have, over the past three years, reliably housed movie releases from established franchises and properties including “The Batman,” ($134 million opening weekend) “Creed III” ($58 million) and “Uncharted” ($51 million).

After a two-month drought, "Dune: Part Two" has delivered a much-welcomed deluge of ticket sales to the domestic box office — and its success could bring a third franchise film to cinemas. The Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment film opened with an estimated $81.5 million at the box office, the highest of any film released so far in 2024. Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic, the second in the Dune franchise, was buoyed by IMAX ticket sales, which represented around 23% of domestic ticket sales, or $18.5 million. "The only reason it wasn't higher is we ran out of seats," said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX. IMAX represented 18% of all international ticket sales, the company said.

AMC Entertainment, often viewed as a bellwether for the industry as the world’s largest movie theater chain, is not immune to those challenges. Taylor Swift attends "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" Concert Movie World Premiere at AMC The Grove 14 on October 11, 2023 in Los Angeles, California. While box office revenues have not yet recovered to pre-pandemic levels, until this year, they had been on an upward trajectory. Wold lowered his projection for the domestic box office to $8.6 billion, down from $8.9 billion earned in 2023. Upping the showmanshipDespite the box office slowdown this year, AMC found itself at the center of yet another viral moment earlier this month.
