Just last week the S&P 500 hit a new all-time high and notched its best showing in a year. But this nearly unprecedented surge in the markets is sparking some concern over what’s driving the rally and whether it can continue. The S&P 500 and Dow last week each reached record levels after blockbuster earnings from the chipmaker set off a broad market rally. The S&P 500 is up more than 6% for the year, but when you equally weigh all of the stocks in the index, it’s up just 2.5%. Last year, the S&P 500 rose by 24.2%, but the equally-weighted index was up by just 11.6%.

☆ Kellogg’s CEO faces backlash for saying people should eat cereal for dinner to save money

In an interview with CNBC last week, WK Kellogg CEO Pilnick said the company was advertising cereal for dinner to consumers looking for more affordable options. CNBC host Carl Quintanilla asked Pilnick if encouraging weary customers to eat cereal for dinner could “land the wrong way.”Pilnick thought the opposite. Cereal prices alone increased 28% since January of 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Food brands under fireDespite the CEO’s assurances, Kellogg’s advertisement and Pilnick’s comments have led to a backlash on social media. BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) — Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim, who went to prison for corruption and then regained his old job back eight years ago in a remarkable political comeback, has won the Democratic nomination for another term. Ganim, 63, defeated John Gomes, the city’s former chief administrative officer, by a narrow margin Tuesday in a party primary. First elected mayor in 1991, Ganim was in office 12 years, then quit when he was caught accepting bribes and kickbacks. Convicted of racketeering, extortion and other crimes, he spent seven years in prison, but then won his old job back in an election in 2015. Gomes, 52, who immigrated from the Cape Verde Islands, announced he was running for mayor against his old boss after losing his city job last year.

For a tax system to be fair and efficient, taxpayers must, at a minimum, be able to determine what they owe by consulting published codes. In the U.S., however, a new tax—the book minimum tax, also known as the corporate alternative minimum tax—went into effect at the beginning of 2023. The legislation establishing the levy is vague, and the Internal Revenue Service hasn’t issued clear rules. The lack of clear tax rules allows the IRS to write new rules during audits. It may even be unconstitutional: The lack of clear rules deprives taxpayers of due process, and delegating the definition of the tax to executive-branch agencies is a dereliction of Congress’s duty to write tax laws.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — As their son lay bleeding from mortal injuries, the family of Tyre Nichols said Friday not only did police fail to render aid — they callously smoked cigarettes in the moments following the fatal beatdown. A grand jury on Friday indicted five former Memphis police officers, charging them with second-degree murder, in connection to Nichols' death.
