ASML , the biggest maker of equipment used to manufacture semiconductors, said on Monday it has opened a test laboratory for its High NA EUV lithography equipment, together with Belgium chip research firm Imec. Among chip manufacturers, only TSMC, Samsung, Intel and memory specialists SK Hynix and Samsung are able to manufacture using ASML's current generation of extreme ultraviolet or EUV machines. The new High NA tool allows for up to 60% better resolution, and is expected to lead to new generations of smaller, faster chips. ASML repeated on Monday that it expects customers to begin commercial manufacturing with the tool in 2025-2026. To date ASML has only shipped one other test machine, to Intel in the United States, which plans to use the tool in its 14A process in 2025.

Chey Tae-won, billionaire and chairman of SK Group, prepares to leave after speaking during the Nikkei Forum Future of Asia in Tokyo, Japan, on Thursday, May 23, 2024. Shares of SK Inc., one of South Korea's biggest conglomerates, surged as much as 16% on Thursday after a court reportedly ordered the company's chairman to pay $1 billion to his wife in a divorce lawsuit. Chey Tae-won was told by a Seoul court to pay 1.38 trillion Korean won to his estranged wife, Roh Soh-yeong. Prior local reports suggested Roh was seeking around 2 trillion won as part of a settlement and some of Chey's shares in SK Inc. The final settlement is lower, perhaps explaining the jump in SK Inc. shares, which eventually closed more than 9% higher in Seoul.

Photographer: SeongJoon Cho/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesHigh-performance memory chips are likely to remain in tight supply this year, as explosive AI demand drives a shortage for these chips, according to analysts. "We expect the general memory supply to remain tight throughout 2024," Kazunori Ito, director of equity research at Morningstar said in a report last week. The demand for AI chipsets has boosted the high-end memory chip market, hugely benefiting firms such Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the top two memory chipmakers in the world. High-performance memory chips play a crucial role in the training of large language models (LLMs) such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, which led AI adoption to skyrocket. HBM's production cycle is longer by 1.5 to 2 months compared with DDR5 memory chip commonly found in personal computers and servers, market intelligence firm TrendForce said in March.

In the wake of Nvidia 's launch of powerful new artificial intelligence chips, Goldman Sachs is predicting major growth for memory chips used in AI systems. Called Blackwell, the new GPU chips from Nvidia that power AI models require the latest third-generation memory chips, also known as high-bandwidth memory (HBM/HBM3E). The investment bank expects the total addressable market for HBM to expand tenfold to $23 billion by 2026, up from just $2.3 billion in 2022. The Wall Street bank sees three major memory makers as prime beneficiaries of the booming HBM market: SK Hynix , Samsung Electronics and Micron . Investors have been cautious about the memory market for AI systems since all three major suppliers are due to expand manufacturing capacity and add downward pressure on profit margins.

One investor, however, has set his sights on another company offering a "value angle" on both semiconductors and artificial intelligence. Micron makes dynamic random access memory chips and NAND flash memory chips. DRAM, or dynamic random access memory, is a type of semiconductor memory needed for data processing. Micron is the third-largest player in the memory sector, coming after just South Korea's SK Hynix and Samsung , he added. The world's largest contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company on Thursday posted better-than-expected profit and revenue on the back of weaker macroeconomic conditions. That compares with TSMC's guidance for fourth-quarter revenue between $18.8 billion and $19.6 billion. "In the fourth quarter, revenue increased 14.4% sequentially [from the third quarter], supported by the continued strong ramp of our industry-leading 3-nanometer technology," said TSMC in its fourth-quarter earnings report. But analysts say chip inventories at smartphone and PC makers are running down and expect restocking demand to pick up. In its third-quarter earnings report in October, TSMC said that its business was supported by the industry-leading 3-nanometer technology and higher demand for 5-nanometer technologies, partially offset by customers' ongoing inventory adjustment.
